Symbiostock - Hosting / Re: 1and1 ?
July 14, 2013, 22:54
I started with 1und1 (as my other sites are hosted there and  4 additional domains were for free), but 1und1 does not grant you enough processing power. You won't be able to process images larger than 10 MB there. My domain is still registered at 1und1 but the nameservers point to bluehost now, where I moved my symbiostock site. Bluehost will charge  $4.95/month ... even if you have a small portfolio, I would  invest this money as Symbiostock has big, big potential if you ask me (and it's fun ... you'll see :-) )

This is a great idea! I have sold royalty free fotos on alamy, but never one of my rights managed. Great way to promote them I think. I will test it next days. Cheers Andrzej.

Update:  The bug has been tracked down and fixed. Version 2.0.1 has been sent out to all previous purchasers and has been updated in the new store.

I decided to move to a dedicated site for CleanTheme and future child themes, which I've set up here: http://www.symbiothemes.com/

If you have any questions on CleanTheme version 2.0 please check out the dedicated support forum here: http://www.symbiothemes.com/forums/forum/cleantheme/

Thanks to those who helped trouble shoot today, I appreciate your input and patience!  I'm back to SymbioGuides for a few days, feel free to message me any tutorial requests!

Amanda, I really would appreciate a tutorial about SEO, the next step I should invest (I fear a lot of) time and don't really know too much about. I have transferred my sitemaps to google webmaster tools but I am sure I should do a lot on every single image and page. But what exactly, I don't know  ;D

I submitted a sitemap to google last week ... guess I have to be patient till it has an impact. And yes, I think you are right: My next step should be to work on my SEO. I haven't done very much yet. Thanks for your answers  :)

I've added a list of the alexa ratings for all symbiosites at http://symbiostock.cascoly.com

also a list of average prices charged across all sites

Thank, this is interesting stuff! I just wonder why my alexa-rating is that bad. Just because my domain was registered some weeks ago and other domains were registered earlier? Any ideas what I might do wrong?

Cheers Amanda, this is a great website ... I'm sure this will help to grow our network or even make it explode  :)
(Hoping it will help a little to make our seeds blossom, I added a link to your website on my "About"- and "FAQ"-Page.)

Thanks ... I guess I was blind  :-[

Leo, please just delete this thread ...

1. Save your network screen, thus giving default values for all of your initial filter levels.
2. Go to box at bottom of that screen, and check the "update public image info[]" box, ... save.
3. Go to Author Options and set your default rating level to whatever. Then at bottom of screen push "update all image info". Sorry if you will be overwriting some prices :D This is a big update and it will only happen once.

I followed that, but still I can't find my new images in categories and they are not searchable ... while I see them in similar images ... strange :-\

I just updated to the recent version, and uploaded two new images. After processing and publishing those two I did a search for "salad" : Search result: 4 images, but only two of them (the old images) are displayed. The two new photos are neither searchable nor visible in their categories. Did I miss some settings in the new rating and ranking system?

Thanks Leo, everything worked like it should  :)

I found a yellow field in the symbiostock-area (I guess you mean that with ladybug) indicating me that the sitemap is not generated yet. I confirmed it, but I'm not sure whether anything happend ...
#162
Just back from 14 days in France without computer and smartphone, I purchased the plugin and installed it. But now I don't find the generated sitemap. Please help me to get back in the digital world  ;D

Leo, could you please tell which information our cookies exactly collect or where I can find the cookies to see which information is in there?
#165
Actually I can't tell, I did not go through the whole process, I stopped before I was forwarded to Paypal. Can I do this test with my own Paypal-Account? I don't want to ask my friends for every test-purchase I do  :D

Actually I can't really tell how r-rated is defined (the term is based on laws of American film industry if I got it right). As I understand it an image is r-rated when a person is nude and the nudity is not covered. Most agencies handle it like that: buttock is not r-rated but female nipples and of course frontal nudity in lower regions of the body are. This is the way I would prefer to handle it on my site, but if there should be an image which I did not flag as r-rated and network-members would suggest to do it for some comprehensible reason, I would of course be ready to flag this image r-rated.
#167
Glad you said you did not mean my site, really. Actually I would prefer not to upload anything what would kick my site to a "second circle", because there are lots of other photos in my portfolio, which I really would like to keep in the "first circle". This is why I would suggest the possibility to flag single images as r-rated when uploading and give every customer and network-member the possibility to decide whether r-rated photos should appear in the search or not. For customers it could be done with an optional check-box "show also r-rated images" beside the search, for network-members there could be a check-box "generally hide r-rated images in my search-results" in the network-settings.

There are varying levels of tolerance among different people with different values...then you have all the search engine considerations as well, and a sort of "shared" reputation people have among network members.

Perhaps its time for people to start discussing a system for content rating. As you know, it should be a responsability of the person to rate their content, from g onward.

Then you will have those people who do not seem to care about the rights of their network members, who engage in spammy and obviously bad activity - so I invite people to start working out some community regulation as well.

I'm sure you can come up with something.

Yes, I see these varying levels of tolerance ... I'm quite open-minded, but sure I do not want to offend anybody. So I would be glad to hear what others think.
#169
This is an interesting point. I have some nudes online, but all nudity is covered so I hope no-one will be offended by these pictures. I could imagine to upload some tasteful nudes (not covered) in future ... I haven't done it yet because I do not want to offend anybody within or outside our network.
I could imagine that someone could implement the possibility to mark a picture as r-rated (as Shutterstock does it for example) and give the customers and other network members the possibility to decide whether these pictures should appear in the search or not. It would be great because not a whole portfolio would be excluded from search but only the r-rated images.

You're right ... I didn't notice that. So we can call it a minor bug  :D But perhaps Leo can have a look at it when he's back from his summer break ... I don't have a clue, but I hope it's not very complicated to fix it.
#171
I just discovered this: When I have for instance two files in my File Management Area and delete one of them, the "Buy Now" button won't be activated after checking the check box "I agree to the terms" above and I am not forwarded to Paypal. Is it only me or does anyone else experiences that?
Edit: When I go back and add a second file, everything is working fine again... nice way to force buyers to purchase more than one photo  ;D

Before summer break?

Didn't you write that you would like to enjoy summer and take a break? I would be glad if I understood you wrong  ;D

Creating a license which can be customized by the users is a very good idea I think. But probably I'm not the right one to code it, because my knowledge about php is quite low. To be honest: you can't even call it knowledge ;D  I fear I would screw up something  :-\ Perhaps it is the last thing you want to do before your summer break, Leo?  :D
#174
Leo, I really understand that you need a break and want to enjoy the summer. And I'm really happy with everything now except the missing extended license. I think about of trying to code it myself but actually I do not know very much about php. My idea was to use the vector size (which I don't need as I do only photos) and change everything in functions.php from vector to extended license. But I fear that this is not everything what must be done to have the extended license implemented correctly from the beginning (setting the price) to the end (making the download available to the customer). Could you give me some hints which files must be changed ... or could you even imagine to implement it yourself before your summer break?

I just tried to find where I can set up my promoted keywords. I was looking in user - my profile, symbiostock - autor options and  symbiostock - marketing, but didn't find it ... perhaps it's just to late and I should get some sleep  :D
