So I got my first status update emails from Fotolia. So far 10 accepted, 14 declined due to not reaching a "desired level of aesthetic quality" (whatever that means), and 2 rejected due to "overabundant photo category". Is there some way I can actually see the ones that were rejected? I haven't figured out that one yet on Fotolia. Serving up another 54 images for them tonight.

Definitely not worth your time. Stay away and even go exclusive with IS!
I've thought about going exclusive with IS, but I find their requirements too restrictive so I dont see it as a viable option. I've got 50 images at Fotolia pending now, so I'll see how the review process goes. Once those have been reviewed I'll submit more as I've found that reviewers dont tend to like extra large batches of images all at once.

I had 2 sales in two days earlier this week; quite a flurry of activity for BigStock. All is quiet now though.

I actually preferred the E500 over the 510. The noise control was better on the 500 and the JPEGS on the 500 were far better than what I could get with the 510. While RAW on the 510 is great, I found the JPEGS even at the highest quality setting completely useless for stock; even at ISO 100. I had the E510 for only 4 months and then went to Sony DSLR's. I love my A700

Just add up your income (from all photography sources), then add up your expenses (from same) then deduct the second figure from the first to determine profit a.k.a taxable income. If you can't work it out for yourself then pay someone who can. Simples. That's pretty much how I do it too. Since all my income comes through Paypal, I just print off my Paypal activity for my income statements and keep one of those accordian folders for receipts/ expenses and printed paypal statements, plus other income sources.

I uploaded an initial 50 images there (bit of a tedious process with the keyword heirarchy etc). I'll see how that batch goes. I also resized my images to 3600 pixels on the long side (normally over 4000 pixels) since it seems that the XL size is over 7.8 MP and the next size is like 15MP.

I used to have an Oly E-510 and used an OM mount 50mm F3.5 macro with great results. The nice thing about the E-510 (and 410 too I imagine) was using live view when using the OM lenses as you can zoom in 7x or 10x in live view to get your focus exact before taking the shot (use a tripod). I found that feature very beneficial when using the OM lenses. I'll also echo that the kit lenses are excellent quality and very suitable for stock.

222 images online, 269 views, $4.50 in royalties.
Better than BigStock Photo at least

Wow .05/ image inspected! If you can do 200 images/ hour that'd be 10.00/ hour ( I think that would be a tough rate to do sine thats over 3 images / minute). I think I'll stick with my dayjob.

I have a contributor account there from last year that's still active but I never really did anything with it. Since my port is for the most part established on other sites, I thought about turning my attention to Fotolia, so I guess I'll give it a whirl. I'll be a bit on the picky side with what I submit and see how the approval ratio goes.

Just looking for some feedback from some current Fotolia contributors on this one. I currently have a port with SS, IS, DT, StockXpert; all with a good degree of sucess (well not so much with StockXpert anymore). I have about 500-600 good quality images that I can submit to Fotolia, so Im wondering if it would be worth my time or not. Thoughts?

I have my entire port on mostphotos for a few weeks now but no sales so far. They are by far the easiest to upload to and theres no reviewers getting in the way, so everything you upload there is active in their database. Not much money to be made there, but the great thing there is that you can upload your port back to your hard drive again, so in essence it becomes a free place to back up your port.

My sales have been cosistently good across the board for 2009. Funny though how my 12.2MP DSLR almost feels obsolete Nd inadequate in light of the recent plethora of big mega-pixel DSLR's. I guess some buyers still prefer the "bigger is better" image mentality, but fortunately I should be in a position to go FF DSLR next year assuming my sales continue along as they have. Of course there's also this little matter of upgrading my desktop to accomodate 24.6MP files...

I uploaded a batch of 5 earlier today and the review time said "3 hours"; nice! so I uploaded another 14 and now the review time says "89 hours", so did a bunch of people read this thread and subsequently tie up the quick review times?

I sell my landscapes at the market from $100 to $200 mounted. There is about $60 to $120 margin in that.
The stuff I sell for stock does not get the same attention to detail, does not take ages to get the right shot, and does not cost travel money. I had originally thought about going that route a few years ago as I do mostly landscapes and nature oriented stuff and then do the market tour thing. I know a few guys locally who do that, but geez you gotta put out alot of money up front mounting a number of prints and then having some kind of presentation booth, plus spending all weekend at these things only to sell a couple of prints if you're lucky. It's a lot of work and alot of money up front and then continues being alot of work. Through Zenfolio my mark-up for prints is around 15.00 depending upon requested print size and Zenfolio takes care of everything. I'd much rather get a smaller amount and not go through all the up front costs and related work than try to do it all myself and have alot of money tied up in prints that may or may not sell. Since it looks as though we won't be getting paltry subscription royalties for prints, I'm for the move. I'd just like to know who they'll be using as a print service.

I have a number of lanscape and nature images on DT; many of which would make great prints, but I have mixed feelings about DT's move as Id rather do the print end of things through my website and Mpix; where I know the print quality is very good. A buyer through subscription could buy a print and I end up getting .35 in royalties which rather sucks, or is that not the case?

I do fairly well making extra money supplying images for my local tourism board. I got my foot in the door with them a couple of years ago and now Im one of their main "go-to" guys for images and photoshoots because I bend over backwards for them. They put out a visitor guide every year and I always get a good 10 or so sales there. If your local town has a chamber of commerce or some sort of tourism budget, check out that avenue.

I had the first level paid account with PS back when they were dabbling in stock sales last year. I cancelled m account with them shortly after they pulled out of the stock end of things about a year ago and went with a Zenfolio pro account, which I find much more user friendly and better suited to my needs. I like the fact that Mpix is hooked to Zenfolio for prints as I know that they do a great job and are muchbetter recognized than Photoshelter's EZpics. I only sell my images as prints on Zen, but they do have image download options too. Overall I like Zen much better than PS.

BigStock is only a few bucks a month for me as well, but my port there untilrecently was only around 150. Lately I've been busy uploading more from my port and should have more like 500 soon and I'll see how it goes. All my master images are properly Titled with description and keywords and their uploading process is quite simple, so what the heck.

I have 3 images that are exclusive with DT. One was due to it selling well on adt but not so much on other sites, and the other two I made exclusiv because they were immediately put into some kind of collection which gave them alot of exposure right from the outset. I really like DT's approach to exclusivity on an image by image basis. I've thought at times about going exclusive with IS but their agreement is far too restrictive. If IS took the same approach as DT with exclusive images, Id definitely have exclusive images at IS too.
