in every other industry they try to slash suppliers' costs to cut costs, why micro should be any different ? we're a cost, not a scarce resource that needs to be incentivized and paid properly, IS is not a boutique agency with hard to find specialists. You are wrong. You can produce - let's say - potatoes, and negotiate their price. But in microstock world some potatoes sell 1000 times more than other potatoes. Everyone wants to sell those potatoes.

My stats look very much like Lisa's This is the closest I've ever been quitting IS. Their cumbersome (and slow!) upload system is just too much work considering that their earnings have dropped dramatically and I also hate them deeply. I haven't been able to stop uploading there because the earnings from IS have been a significant part of my income. As it looks now, they make me only 10 to 15% of my earnings. I really could afford quitting this time (and I would of course leave my portfolio there to earn some small change) I'll wait for a couple more months, and if they downhill continuess I will stop uploading there (what a relief that would be!)

Haven't been able to upload to Veer for the last few weeks. Some images goes through the system, but some don't. They either say it's an error, or they get stuck in uploading the first image. I hope they fix this soon...

There is no "typical" rate for this. It all comes up to you: Where are you living? How much do you need? What is your skill level?

First time I do a quick session at my studio, just to test out how a person acts in front of my camera and how the images turn out. The images are just tests, they are not for stock. They can have a few freebie images from this session.
If I liked the person and the results, I will pay a modest hourly rate. Because it's fair, professional and makes my models almost certainly turn up on the day and time of the shoot.

Will the Cell Phone Replace the dSLR? Never
Agreed. If you take a cell phone, add a decent sensor, interchangeable lenses for flexibility, fast autofocus, decent manual controls and buttons, good viewfinder, a good grip, connections for flashes, big memory cards etc... If you add that up you get a DSLR.

Once the image has sold 3 times, the contributor will have the ability to reset his image price once again.
... ... I really don't have the time and/or energy to start resetting my image prices file by file

Well the IS forum discussion thread on this has been locked by Lobo. Why has he done this ? It's because IS is a dictatorship.

Just don't use paper when you shoot small objects, use plastic.

I don't know which is worse: Hiding cashflow problems by pretending it's an IT problem or having a totally incompetent IT department in a company that operates mainly on the internet.
How can they take 85% of the sales price and not be able to work out a simple glitch? And if it's not a small glitch, with the money they have taken from my sales (propably over $100 000, maybe even $200 000 - I don't dare to do the math) they should be able to even make a new PP statistics system. (It can't be THAT hard, it's just adding some numbers)

Anyone else having poor sales in July? Of course it's summer, but my earnings are about 1/5 of my SS earnings, and that's incredibly low (usually the number should be about 1/2 of my SS earnings). I'm still saying this is a cashflow problem.
I wish we had a "Snowden" working at IS who could inform about all the shenanigans going on.

A part of me is delighted to see IS one step closer to bankruptcy. They have run out of money, and are trying every way to keep the sinking ship afloat. No sympathy or good will from me.
The other part of me is angry and worried because my earnings are suffering because of this YAFbIS (Yet Another Fiasco by Istockphoto)

My main problem is that I'm living in a nordic country. It's very expensive to live here, If I'd move to - let's say - Poland, I could quit my other work instantly. I also like some of my commissioned work: I like to meet interesting people and visit interesting places - I would not like to quit that completely. But I would certainly like to be able to say "no" to certain clients

Using prime lenses also help. I usually use just three different lenses, I have learned their DOF at different apertures and distances. With zooms learning is more difficult because there are too many combinations to remember.

I think the best thing here is to learn the theory (1/3 of DOF is in front of the focal point and 2/3 behind) and always know what aperture you are using (Aperture priority or Manual mode. Soon you will learn what aperture to use and where to focus to get sufficient sharpness.

The rule of thumb is to not use a DOF calculator, especially when shooting digital - you can check your DOF by zooming your images. Never used a DOF calculator, never needed one.

Guys, you are replying to 3 1/2 year old comments, technology in cameras has advanced a whole lot since then.
It has? I don't think so. I'm still shooting with my old 5D mk II because I didn't find 5D mk III that much better. (Waiting for the mk IV... And the Canon vs. Nikon is still continuing...

I'm just curious as to why.
Thousands of euros invested in Canon lenses, flashes, adapters, cable releases, TTL-cables and other accessories. I'm also familiar with Canon products, their usage and design etc. (I don't have the time and energy to learn Nikon's quirks - and "unlearn" Canon's) That's why I'm sticking with Canon as long as possible. D800 is a very nice camera, but I can't swap systems just because of one model without knowing what Canon is developing... The bottom line: Both Canon and Nikon have great cameras and great systems. I would get equally good (or bad) images with both.

Yes, but about 2/3 of my income comes from commissioned work (Only 1/3 from (micro)stock)

Wow... I thought I was a professional photographer... Now I really need to find out where my money comes from - it can't be photography!

I lost about 1000 images. I don't know the exact amount or the reasoning behind this

My April was very good, maybe even BME when PP sales are added. Especially SS rocked It's a Nikon D5100. Still in its waranty but it will be gone for another 4 weeks now for repair and this will cost me many new images I could make in that time.
There is always a plenty that can be done without a camera; planning next shoots, finding props etc.

132, 48, 41, 33, 23 have all the same problem: the text says Micro Stock Group, when it should be Microstock Group (as in 104 and 27). 128 says Micro Stockgroup.
I don't like the brown color, It's a very difficult color in logos.

If the site has an extremely easy uploading process and there are at least some sales, I can't see any reason why not upload.
I have a dozen of sites where the active uploading time (just a few clicks) is about 1 minute per month and each site makes be around $200/year. And that's just for 12 minutes of extra work per year. That's $1000 per hour, a very nice rate.
