Thank you so much for sharing. This could be just the thing I need to do. My wife has said for a very long time I should sell direct if I want more money. Have you had much success with it ? There are a lot of complex installations of various plugins I am a bit daunted with so a lot to understand.
This could be the revolution for us photographers to earn a decent living without being at the mercy of the stock agencies.

Open a personal site to sell your pictures then! You will have more chances to sell some of your arts, and you can combine it to the delivery via editorial/stock agencies. You could use Symbiostock, an open source platform. It's easy to customise and the result is excellent. Also transactions are 100% safe for your customers as the payments are made via paypal.
For example I have developed my personal site using this technology. Check out my site at www.millionstock.com
Have a nice job!

As we can post links for most of our microstock images and footage on social media like twitter, Faceache, pintrest, instagram etc I was wondering if it works for anyone here in boosting sales. For instance, would randomly posting an image of a subject be picked up by a client who is looking for the image with the same keyword ? I have tried myself a tew times but can't really say there is evidence as nobody lets you know. Wha I do get are followers who are doing similar things like photography, music production. Not sure why following an unkown like me will help them.

Sorry folks, just woke up in a bad mood and stayed like that all day. One of those days. My experience as a student was using all types of format of camera, studio, darkroom, printing and processing. Editorial too. Digital photography was still light years away in 1985-89. I knew a guy who I used to go out with shooting stock who shot medium format tranparency film submitting to image bank and other Uk libraries. he seemed to be making good money at it and I think still does. I think the shrinking sales coupled with low priced images has started to get to me. The more I get accepted doesn't seem to make any difference to sales. Footage at least gets higher prices but again sales for that I get are once in a blue moon. And as for setting your own pricess on sites like Pond5, forget it. Never sell any images there and hardly any at Alamy. I personally prefer to walk around and get shots that I find by accident. I never plan or reserch and would find things like weddings uninspiring and not my cup of tea. I also wouldn't like the responsilbility. Walk around photography granted isn't the best business plan but thta's how I like to work and feel most creative freedom. Perhaps going to more events and getting food, people etc will help.

It was mid 1980's when times were more optimistic I suppose. I don't mind selling just microstock but we should get paid far more than we do for the time, editing and legwork of getting to these locations. I also sold an image that ended up being used as the main backdrop of an A listed Hollywood movie poster. Did I get much for it ? No, I got peanuts.

DT needs to be ranked far lower than the place it is here. Why is it above IS ? DT is abysmal for sales. $2 for the whole month. Absolutely dire.

I don't know about anyone else here but I am sick of earning crumbs from under the table from the feast that the fat cats are getting from our images. Piddling little sales of a few cents (converted to UK pounds spells even less) I didn't study photography for 4 years as a student to be one day being reduced to earning a pittance from my images. As a student we were told of the lucrative career we could make from photography.
It's like everything online that has been devalued. Music, video footage and photography. Rant over.

Even using a full frame camera, good lighting, prime lens and good subject matter = rejections, rejections, rejections, rejections, rejections, rejections, rejections, rejections etc etc etc .................

It is abysmal if in the 21st century a site cannot get customers to see files newer than 2011.

Mmmm. Still no sales for footage despite putting my prices up to $79. Perhaps pricing low is the only answer

Well since I increased my video prices to $79 as advised, not one single sale
You increased your prices sometime on March 1st......today's the 4th! Perhaps some patience.
At your lower prices were you selling video everyday at P5?
No, as I siad in my earlier post I hardly ever sell any footage. Once in a blue moon but more successful on SS

Well I suppose as I am not offering my services as such it's going to be pretty pointless as I Am not looking for jobs. Perhaps it won't help my moscrostock images as buyers will look on the sites themselves rather than Instagram. I have found Twitter dissapointing also. I also sell my music and all I get ae other producers, musicians following me with no intention of interest in my work.

I also wonder if people can steal your images from Instagram If I post my best of stock. I never get work other than my submitting to microstock. I did a shoot for a client years ago of an event and it was a nightmare. I don't like being responsible for such things. I wouldn't mind selling prints though.

I have been told by a very excited friend that Instagram is the thing to have for promoting your images. Just would like your opinions here as to how useful it is for your microstock or even selling privately etc ? To my first impressions it seems more geared around mobile phone users of which I am not. I have an ipad but find that impractical for taking shots. I just feel swamped with options that seem to all be doing pretty much the same thing like Twitter, Pinetrest and Instagram.

I hardly sell images either, once a blue moon. I had them priced at $24.99 top but now brought them down to $14. Will wait and see. I am still wondering if my footage should be reduced to around $30-40 because they just don't sell.

I will try it and report back after some time although when uploading footage the Pond5 average guide is telling me the trend is for around the $59 mark.

Perhaps my footage on Pond5 is priced too high at $59 ?

Visibledust product are good, but it is never easy to get a satisfying result with these cleaning kits. Maybe you could find some specialized company to clean it. But the easiest way that I have found to avoid dust spots on videos if to not close the diaphragm more than f/8… I know that it is not always possible, but if you can do it it works!
Thanks. Yes, the shots were of a distant industrial building on my 70-300 lens stopped down to at least f8. I will try and keep vide under that then for now at least. I know this sounds a bit heath robinson but what about the sensor upside down with mirror up and a vacuum cleaner pipe an inch or so away while using a dust blower. The vacuum would make sure no dust returns ?

I had 2 RX10 cameras from different stores. Both went back as the still quality was poor due to inconsistent focusing. A lot of shoots came back soft and even out of focus so I got a D750 in the end. I will say though that the lens with shooting video was excellent. For a video camera the RX10 is ideal.
