I dont know of a site that doesnt require a registration for a download. Its a once off, and then all they need to do is login when they come back. I think people expect to sign up these days. And its only a username and email, very quick. I do agree that emailing the password might be a it cumbersome, but if they want the image, they will register.
if the site uses paypal there's no need to register
clickbank just takes you to a payment screen, no need to register to download programs or images
for those who want it, it should be an option
Not a real solution, but is it possible to set up an anonymous guest account? Then set the username and password to default to "guest" and thus allow anyone to purchase from the site without having to register!

Can't wait to see their images from the Bears, Bulls, Cubs, and White Sox games. Would be funny to see them on the sidelines with their Iphones.
They'll buy in from Getty/whoever.
Exactly. Newspapers are in decline so its not surprising to hear this. They only need low resolution images for both newspaper print and the web. A news picture only needs to tell a story and in most circumstances does not require a skilled photographer. They can hire a freelancer when they need something special I guess! It could be Microstock quickened their retirement from the industry what with cheap editorial images so available these days.

Try something like this
.home-content { background: #ffffff; }
For your background image you probably want to scale it to fit, so add something like this
background-size: 100%;

I really like the search options. The visual appearance is also very nice. It looks professional. That's an area Leo has not yet focused on, leaving it to us to enhance the style ourselves. The advantage of SY is that its being built from within the industry from someone who knows the in's and out's.

3D Software + X amount of machines is the simple answer.
I use 3DS Max and Vray myself. I could network render with it as the licenses provide up to 1000 networked machines, but I use a render farm instead and charge it to the client.
As for the spec of the network machines obviously the more power the better, but I'd research the exact details.
What is your current set-up?

Hmmm, I'm not sure whats going on with that space, it's not appearing on the demo site so maybe something that was added in the side bar.
For fun, I did a screen shot of the demo site on my iPhone vs the preview on the Studiopress site, attached. Just a note, if you remove the drop down in the menu with CSS it will cause issues, so it's best to do it through the actual search template's php. It seems like people want this out in general so I may just make it a feature?
Reef, I'm open to tips on making things more responsive, (menu update is already in the works) I've tried to make sure it looks nice enough on a phone or an iPad that a designer would want to check it out more thoroughly.
I had a quick look at your site a few days ago and it looked awesome. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it has anything to do with your template. The issues go back to the root template Leo created. And I know he is under pressure with more serious coding than this so...... that's why I mentioned we may have to hack it ourselves for now. That's strange, I was checking HitVectors and the search does wrap on my iPhone. I think if Leo could centre it for small devices that would be a good fix. Same with the top menu. Or can we do a css fix?

Chico that looks awesome!
That responsive testing site is cool but it's not entirely accurate. I have an iPhone and the search bar doesn't really wrap like that on a screen that size. It's also been tested on an iPad and a couple of Galaxy android phones.
The responsiveness could probably still use a bit of work, I do plan to upgrade the menu in the future. Beyond that I don't know if I plan on getting super detailed with responsiveness for tiny screens since realistically most designers searching for images aren't going to be working on their phones.
The 320 looks exactly the same on my iPhone except there is no blue bar at the top. There is a very large gap between the slider and the intro. I agree most designers do not search for images on their iPhone, but some do Hey, we are in the age of Responsive Web Design!

I'm almost ready.
Looking good - you got a few responsive issues. I just checked your site to see if they were the same issues I have, and they are.
Have a look here and you will see what I mean http://www.studiopress.com/responsive/
I guess a css hack will work for now while we are in beta.
Thanks for post. I have no idea how to fix it.
me neither I think the alignment issues such as search and the thumbnails will eventually be fixed by Leo. From our side we can setup a class to remove excessive content to make it easier to view on a small device. I haven't tried yet but the css would be something like .for-mobile{ display: none; } Its late here. I'll have a go tomorrow.

Huge thanks Leo. I'm so glad someone finally took this on and I hope you reap the rewards you deserve.

I'm also late. I did not realize the deadline was so soon. I do want to share my version. I think a strong logo needs a recognizable icon that could stand alone. It should also 'tell' something about the subject. I put 'photography, talk, discussion and the initial of the logo 'M' in an icon. The camera is standing on an M that functions as a tripod. The lens is a text balloon. Didn't want it to go to waste so I'm just sharing it anyway. I just found out it was closed just now.
LOL, being late is the story of my life! Nice concept. Looking at Leaf's other choice of designs, I have noticed he leans towards "slick looking"

Leaf, I was going to enter this but I missed the deadline - I did make a start as you can see in the top version. The next step would have been a version with the initials, MSG, in the circles. The other version, bottom example, was just a quick idea but would need to be developed properly.

Thanks guys! I am still tweaking here and there. As soon as I finish breaking and fixing my site for educational purposes (and get some more images up) I'll move on to making a few child themes. I think this project has reignited my web design urges!
Awesome! Nice work

Sounds great Leo. I dived into this a few days ago and have managed to get something up and running already. http://www.astonmars.com/
I have some questions but I think I'll wait until your next update is complete before asking
Awesome site, I love it. I wish I had the CSS/php skills that some of you guys have!
Thanks cclapper. I have no PHP skills either. I used Firefox Firebug to figure out the CSS coding. Feel free to PM me if you want to look at my CSS Child Stylesheet. FYI, I used https://typekit.com/ for fonts and http://vfb.matthewmuro.com/ for the form.

jcpjr - take a look at symbiostock.com - there are some tutorials on there in the forum
~~
Reef - there is certainly a different looking site - lack of navigation and way of finding categories might be a problem? I do like your verification though, that looks simple for visitors and as if it will work with any platform. I have sent you a message so you can check your messages are working and that email addresses come though
I think it's because there is no uploads yet..
Its true I have not uploaded my work yet but that's not the reason. If we are all going to be linked via the network Leo is setting up then I figured there's no point in having categories because the customer cannot select a category in their search across the Network (we all have different categories). The only categories I would like to see are Photography and Illustration, and that could be inserted back into the Search feature, replacing Images and Blog. Oh, and I also like clean and simple - less is more Tinny - thanks for your mail - received ok

Would this be a good choice for music editing too ? Get a Mac mate, the vast majority of graphics pros use them. I have been in a lot of design studios, and I can think of only 1 that uses PC's.
What sort of Mac can you buy for the OP's budget of 400?
Oh, 400 quid. Well there's that saying "Poor people always pay twice" It's taken me half a life time to appreciate how true that is

Don't know but my Nvida Quadro 4000 card alone cost more than this I have 2 x Dell Workstations. Should anything fail (its rare but can happen) a Dell Service Engineer is at your door within 24 hours. Every now and then they do amazing discounts on their Workstations. Its worth checking out if you want power and peace of mind.

who cares??? a new agency brought to you by the same guy who sold you out once. he is a smart business man and has way too many of you suckered.
Yes, maybe Bruce "sold us once", but sometimes I get the feeling that Getty sell us daily.
only sometimes you get the feeling? Had to give a heart to Cobalt's great reply above.

Have you been paid for writing this?
I'm wondering why your work isn't selling on SS. A lot of your illustrations look very inspired.

I think that applying now or in a few months will not change the way somebody shoot or the quality of images in the portfolio drastically...
No it won't, but if you don't know what they want, as you pointed out earlier, and you have a diverse portfolio, then maybe worth waiting a bit. Bruce joined saatchi online after he sold IS. Worth checking out. Could be a clue!
