General Stock Discussion / Re: The Next Step

I believe that the Earnings Ratings in the Microstock Poll Results just show a short-term trend from one month to the next.  So, for example, if people make more money in October than September, it would show an up arrow.  And in January, probably everything will be down.

Where are the suggestions for the canon G series

leaf:

While the Canon G series are great cameras, the OP was looking for a "little pocket sized camera".  I don't think that I would call those cameras "pocket sized".

I have big pockets or you have small pockets, or maybe that 1/2 inch to 7/10" isn't really as big a difference as it seems?  ;D

As I stated previously, the G series cameras are nice cameras, but the OP was looking for a "little" pocket sized camera.

For an inch here and there, the G10 gives many more features and much more control. Aprox. $100 more for a G10 than a SD950.

Amazon lists the Canon G10 at $475 and the Canon SD950 at $300.  That is about $175 more and more than half the cost extra of the SD950.

Plus, if you are going to go for a G series, then why not get a Canon Rebel XSi 450?  It's just a little larger and another $100 more!  I'm sure that your big pockets could hold one  ;)

As many have alluded to, there is no way that someone could answer that question for you.

That would be like someone saying that they have a passion for soccer and would like to know how long it would take them to make a living out of it.

There are just too many factors.  Your lifestyle.  The cost of living where you reside.  What you consider "making a living".  The subject matter of photos you take.  The quality of photos that you take.  The acceptance ratio of your images.  Ad infinitum.

The only thing that you can do at the moment is take your current rate of income and pro-rate that.  You state that you make about $1/day from SS and a little more from the rest.  Let's assume that you total $2/day for the sake of argument.  That comes to a little over $700/yr.  If you are looking to make $35,000/yr, then you would need 50x more images (or 5000 images on SS and 2500 images on the others).  As a point of reference, there are only a few % of submitters that ever have over 2500 images.

If you are serious about this, then I would revisit this topic in about a year after you have uploaded a bunch of images and see what has changed.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Tracking Individual Image Sales?

I have no idea of what TFCD is.

TFCD = Time for CD

It means that it is an exchange of their time (as a model) for a CD containing the images from the shoot.

...considering the price increase.

Price increase!

Did I miss something?

OK, it seems that Pixmac is trying to reporting sales and views from Fotolia.

But why?

Why don't they just report their own sales and views?

This will just make it difficult to actually track any sales from Pixmac.

Are they trying to make buyers think that they are having lots of sales?

282
I decided to go back to Pixmac and take a gander.

I found that I have had quite a few sales (according to their site), but I am not seeing them reflected on Fotolia.

For example, if you go to one of my images (for example http://www.pixmac.com/picture/water-drop/000000184443), you will see that it states that I have had a total of 18 sales (on the right side of the screen where it states "Pictures sold: 12").

But that same image is reporting 18 downloads (on the upper right where it states "Downloads:  18").  At first, I thought that this number was the # of downloads from Fotolia, but after checking other files it doesn't match.

If I go through each image that I have, there are a total of 120 downloads reported by Pixmac.

Is anyone else having problems reconciling downloads/sales from Pixmac with sales on Fotolia?

FYI: I have sent Pixmac support an email, so we will see what they say, but I was wondering if anyone else was seeing issues as well.

I have the coupons now, I am just waiting for confirmation to send them out.  They should go out in the next day or two.

This sounds like you physically have coupons (in your hand) and will be mailing them out, but my understanding was that we would receive an email with a promotional/discount code.  Am I misunderstanding something?

I was with Red Bubble for a while until about a year ago. I left because the watermarks were inadequate, ... These things may have been corrected since...

I don't believe that the watermarks have changed any.  They are still pretty useless.

PS - IF you aren't running a 64 bit operating system, you might want to consider it.  could pump data out faster and potentially get your files out quicker

From the performance tests that I have seen, there is no clear cut performance advantage to running Vista 64 over Vista 32.  There are many cases where Vista 64 runs slower than Vista 32.  The main advantage is that Vista 64 can use over 4 GB of memory.

Corbis is ... owned by Bill Gates and i think this is a good thing he has all reason to care about copyright and intellectual property!

Bill Gates has retired from Microsoft.  With all of the money that he has, I doubt that he cares much about business at all these days.

287
Corbis executives said that ... the company will cut the royalty rate it pays most rights-managed contributors.

And what are the odds that those same executives will reduce their salaries as well???

288
What do you plan on using it for?

IMO, the most important thing about a setup are the lenses.  I would advise making sure that at least one quality lens fits within your budget.  I would rather get a less expensive camera and a quality lens, than the other way around.

...I have been on Istock for 12 months and this isn't one of the usual ups and downs for me.

I have heard statements similar to this and it is beginning to make me wonder if some of the microstock sites have it built into their system to give high sales for the first year (to encourage new contributors), but then remove that increase after the first year.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I couldn't put up with not having a watermark.

I agree.  The watermark is useless and they refuse to listen to their contributors.

I have been a customer of B&H for about 20 years (back when they were down the block from Adorama).  IMO, B&H and Adorama are some of the classiest businesses out there.

Unfortunately, I have never been to the new B&H store.  I hear that it is pretty impressive.

Have you been to the newly refurbished Adorama store, yet? (approx triple the size, now)

Helen:

No, I haven't.  I used to frequent your store (and B&H) when I lived in the city (which was over 15 years ago).  I have since moved far away from the city and have not had a chance to see the new stores.  I'm glad to see that the both of you are growing, you both deserve it.

Pixmac / Re: Pixmac reaches 1,000,000 images?!
« on: October 24, 2008, 18:48 »
What are prices compared to FT?  And commissions?

As I posted above, the site seems to sell per image sales that range from 1 to 15 credits.

But I have no idea what the commissions are.

Also, I have checked a few of the larger contributors and they haven't sold much of anything yet.  Out of the three contributors that I checked, there was only 1 sale among them.

They state that they don't want edited images, but if you look at their top sellers many of them are heavily edited. This also shows that some reviewers at IS are ignoring their own rules and allowing specific images that have been heavily edited to get through their inspection process.

Right.  They're selective.  One great edited file doesn't mean that all edited files should get in or are great.

Sorry, but that is incorrect.  IS has stated many times that they don't want heavily edited images.  Yet some of those highly edited images magically seem to make it past the inspection process.  I wonder why???  Hmm!

Pixmac / Re: Pixmac reaches 1,000,000 images?!

It seems that Pixmac released a product (a few days ago) that was not fully tested.

It now seems that the images are tagged as coming from Fotolia (although it is abbreviated "ftl") and include the author's username.

All of my images now show "GeoPappas@ftl".

My biggest complaint with the site (at this point), is that the watermark is very weak.  It basically only works on dark images, which leaves light images open to theft.

I still have lots of questions in regards to this new site, including:

How much do we get for a sale?  The site seems to sell per image sales that range from 1 to 15 credits.  What is our cut?

How will we know that we had a sale from Pixmac?  Will FT show the sale originating from Pixmac?

Why weren't we notified of this to begin with?  It is pretty obvious that contributors are savvy enough to find out about this sort of stuff at some point, so why not notify us from the beginning?  It would go a long way towards "customer relations".

I think you'd be better selling the original image - designers could do that in a few seconds in photoshop.

While I somewhat agree with this sentiment, and it seems to be prevalent among microstock contributors, I don't think that it is very accurate.  I say this because if you look at the top selling images on almost any site, many of them are heavily edited.  For example, if you look at the Top 50 Images Ever on Shutterstock (http://submit.shutterstock.com/top50.mhtml?filter=all), you will find that many of them have been manipulated.

This shows that there is a huge market for edited images.  Not every buyer is a top designer.  There are plenty of mom-and-pop stores that buy images and all they want is something that they can throw on a flyer or web page.  Many buyers don't own Photoshop (or probably even know what it is).  This is where I think IS gets it wrong in a big way.  They state that they don't want edited images, but if you look at their top sellers many of them are heavily edited. This also shows that some reviewers at IS are ignoring their own rules and allowing specific images that have been heavily edited to get through their inspection process.

I hope so.  I know I don't sell much (about 10-15 per weekday before the change) and now it's like 2 a day.  I was really considering going exclusive because my sales had increased for the last 18+ months but overnight it's all wiped out.  I could deal with the 20% commission when I was getting sales but now I'm thinking this might not be worth it.
Since this version of the best match supposedly helps exclusives more than previous versions wouldn't that be an incentive to go exclusive and not a disincentive?

Yes, but you never know when the tide will change...

I like both of them and think that there are potential buyers for both.

I would agree that the first one might look better with a white background.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do.

Are you saying that you want to submit a 3D rendered image and try to see if it will pass for a real human model?  That is, you won't tell the inspectors that it is a rendered image, and you want to see if it will be accepted as a human model and approved?

If so, are you planning on submitting a Model Release?  If so who will sign it?  You?

Or are you planning on telling the inspectors that it is a 3D rendered model and see if it is approved?

I searched IS for 3D rendered images of humans and found only two images:
