This isn't news. They've been accepting images from iPhones for at least six months.

Today's iStock Fuel Newsletter just made it official

Mobile Photography
Social media defines the trends in imagery right now. People want images that look and feel like those streaming past second-by-second online. We think the best way to deliver that is to encourage mobile photography submissions from our contributors.

Dunno if this is a good thing...or not. But expect the floodgate opening from everybody with a mobile camera. And  then there will be the blog posts "YOU CAN MAKE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AT ISTOCKPHOTO WITH YOUR IPHONE CAMERA!"

What you want to do (get money for infringement) IS the right thing to do. No question there.

My point is it is unlikely you will get anything unless you use scare tactics and that is iffy.

Show me ONE full case-study where a microstock photographer won an infringement case and collected money for some images on a small website.

and then I will shut . up  ;D

Let's keep it real.

First you have to file in the correct jurisdiction for a small claims case since this is not a civil case. Then file a bunch of paper work and have them served assuming you can find out who you are actually suing. Then they have to show up which they won't. So you get some judgement by default for a few grand. Now you have to collect but you don't know their bank account number. And they have taken the images down and you've spent MANY hours of time pissed off and paying for court filing fees when you could be taking photos and making money.

You're right, so let's just give up.

And your effective course of action is?

Good luck with that. Not much you can do but ask to take down. I am not being a wise ass just stating the truth. Suing them? Where? How much? Small Claims? Sick Getty lawyers on them or Corbis. They only chase down the massive infringements. It's like stopping snow flakes from hitting the ground.

and what about all the bots scraping data for the microstock data sites? how is that figured?

I don't get it. Any mac user could do a simple command-shift-4 and do a screen grab of the image. Do they really think folks don't know this stuff.

"We may select one of your images to be featured for free on the homepage. This helps showcase your portfolio. Please note that you will not earn commissions on the image that is selected during that week."

So we help promote their site and they want us to provide free imagery with the tiresome promise that "it'll be good exposure for your port"

Does anyone have any positive stories to tell out of doing this?

Free exposure for your entire portfolio to millions of buyers.

And your problem with that is...?  ::)

Think of your marketing as multifaceted and facebook is just one part of a marketing mix. Include a great website with SEO. Write blog articles and get them published with link backs. Use facebook and linkedin for other connections. Try Youtube for info videos about your knowledge. Its all just marketing and FB is just another fishing line in the lake.

Carlyle, CVC, TPG weigh final bids for Getty - Reuters

Quote
Three private equity firms, including Carlyle Group LP (CG.O) and CVC Capital Partners CVC.UL, are weighing final bids for Getty Images, as the auction of the digital media company enters its last leg, according to people familiar with the matter.

TPG Capital TPG.UL also remains in the auction and is considering a final bid for Getty, the people said. The largest supplier of stock photos, video and other digital content could be valued at as much as $4 billion, they said.

Final bids for Getty Images are due on August 6, they added.

Other buyout firms that had earlier taken a look, such as KKR & Co (KKR.N) and Charterhouse CHCAP.UL, have dropped out of the process, the people said.

A sale would come more than four years after private equity firm Hellman & Friedman LLC bought a majority stake in Getty in a $2.4 billion deal.

I wonder who people familiar with the matter actually are.

The sad thing is that it's another equity firm who will likely acquire them.  With all the debt Getty has resulting from the H&F leaches, another private equity firm isn't going to sit back and say, "lets nurture our contributors since they are part of the backbone of this business".  They are going to say, "we want our money and we want it now and in this volume."  It will use simple business principles: cut commissions and raise prices........AGAIN.  For Getty/IS, the RC system was a brilliant move since it is a living, breathing, expanding, contracting target.

And this is why, I believe, we have not seen our 2012 RC levels. They will let the new buyers deal with that. I am hoping the new owners do not impose the 20% for all like the Getty main collection. But with Getty's debt load and investors squeezing them dry -- who knows.

On the other hand, there will always be millions of buyers for low cost images and great portfolios will sell well even if they have to move around to where the buyers migrate to.

1600ws is a lot more than I have, but my local dealer has Elinchrom 1200ws studio strobes for rent.   This weekend I'll be visiting the church for the first time (during an exhibition), so I can check out the color of the ceilings (and height).

You say "high ISO"?  How high?  And was it for stock?

OOPs I meant low ISO... it was 100 ::)

291
I recently shot a racquetball court with high ceilings and just aimed my White Lightening 1600 ws at the ceiling and got plenty of bounce light to shoot at high ISO at around f/8.0. I just used small reflectors with no softbox and let it blast away. It may not work for you but it is a thought. Good luck.

Two things anyone should know about making a thread to broadcast they're leaving a forum:

- half of the members don't care

- the other half are glad to see you go

iStockPhoto.com / Vetta? Really?
« on: July 18, 2012, 12:02 »
I can't figure out what the Vetta inspectors think is Vetta quality. Apparently - since I've never got anything accepted. Go take a look at recent files. Really? Sure some of it is awesome and fits the criteria below but there are many others images that make ya wonder what the inspectors saw that allowed it to pass through the Vetta golden gates.

Here is how iStock describes Vetta:
Content in the Vetta collection, Italian for peak, has seized its own artistic destiny and created a whole new caliber of art.
Vetta content is handpicked by a team of top-rate iStockphoto editors for:
-Exquisite art direction
-Intelligently executed concepts
-Rarity

I was never in it for the simple life and the million dollar income. I could stop tomorrow and never have to work a day in my life, but then why do I keep going?
To be honest, the only thing I really care about is creating content that is mind-blowing and give buyers a "wow" experience. I want the most consistent, perfect, excellently executed collection everywhere I sell my images. I also want it to be available on the simplest, most intuitive and fastest platform thinkable. If I cared only for the income, I would not have students, neither would I do conferences nor interviews. I would only go for the "low hanging fruits" kind of images (and I know what they are)
You can claim it nave, obsessed, or even stupid (as done here), but you cannot deny that if you were to spend your own money buying images, you would care a lot about these qualities. We are at a turning point, rather you like it or not or perhaps have not even seen it coming.
In the midst of the masses of microstock, there is a growing frustration being built up, and it will not be solved by us just adding more content. Passion will prevail! :)

Steve Jobs was as worth $25 Million  at 25-years-old. He said, It was not about making money. It was about making great products and putting a dent in the universe.. Go get'em Yuri. You are young, talented and ambitious. Make some dents my friend.  8)

His business model concerns me. With 100 full time staff and 4 million in sales things could be tight. Numbers don't lie and I assume he has a sharp CFO, but it feels like an urgent and perhaps overly ambitious venture.

And his mentor program is training tons of Mini-Me Yuris that will take their skills and start their own microtock accounts or perhaps website. It has already happened. And no non-compete clause can stop it.

He may also be maxing out on his main subject matter of happy, shiny business, beach, spa, family photos. I mean, how many ways can you shoot that stuff? I see he also has some food shots and concept images. Huh? I thought this was People Images. Ok, so sell that other stuff and music and video but... um perhaps peopleimages.com is a limiting URL?

297
Yes, I'm thinking of quitting and getting a job at Target. :P  It doesn't change the game.  It's a nice site with perfect looking people.  If you want 80k images of the same thing, you know where to go.

That is a key point. His stuff is kinda antiseptic... but he is not stupid. I am sure he is aware of that and will diversify his content. But on the other hand, that stuff sells like crazy. Sure, many discerning art directors will gravitate from that look, but a million regular folks will eat it up indefinitely.

I am sure we will hear from him on this thread soon  ;)

298
Consider the state of microstock sites' inventory. It is mostly massive quantities of about 80% weak images (crap) and growing. Searching for quality images is difficult and will become more so.

That is the nature of amateur crowd sourcing business models (even though I feel the same about RM).

So, here comes Yuri and peopleimages.com. It changes the game with 90%+ cherries. Searches are significantly more productive using his Model Properties and Search Options. It blows away RM in regards to pricing. He has built a massive, prolific photo factory churning out 5,000 quality images a week!.

Currently, peopleimages.com is in its infancy much like iStockphoto was in 2000. They were a game-changer. Once the years roll by and PI gets traction, loyalty, word-of-mouth, a strong organic Google placement and Adwords presence, it may also become a game-changer for people/lifestyle photos and perhaps dominate people stock photography worldwide.

I have the women do their own MU and it has worked out fine. I have some light powder for shine issues when needed on the face. I shoot mostly lifestyle and fitness but if doing glamour I would think a MUA would be important. I don't shoot those glamour shots since there is so much of that and I doubt it is a big seller for microstock.

They said it will be available in the next few weeks -- much like .png files and logo submissions, ya think?  ;) :D
