Very good idea to create a site that links all our smaller sites in one huge search engine.

In order this idea/agency to work smooth we must:

- Create a standard personal site or mini agency  ( for all contributors ) with the same algorithm ( only the first page to differ ). i am willing to contribute at the development.

- Create a standard price structure ( this can be made by voting at the beginning and all others that join after must use the same price structure) for all personal sites.

- All pictures on the personal sites ( with the exception of the original file size ) must be standard ex: size S ( 1000 px) M (2000 px) and original.

- create a search algorithm that favor all contributors regardless of the portfolio size and nr. of downloads.

- Create  some sort of review mechanism because not all contributors are making microstock wordy images , and that can/will affect the agency on long term.

And... the biggest question of the all: How buyers will pay for the photos???....

REMEMBER not all contributors are from EU , USA, Australia ,Canada or other financiary trusted countries .... what trust a buyer have to give the credit card data to a site from a problematic or untrusted country...

This will be possible only by creating a central, trusted credit/ sub purchasing center and the personal agencies will receive the commission after the sale was made using bank account, PayPal or other means or payment.

Those are only a part of the '' problems'' that WILL be encounter.... like i said I am willing to implicate financial in this project.

If you don't spend any money on marketing where do clients come from ? Is it mainly Google/Bing ? I'm sure with the publicity you were getting for years your name and "stock photo people" are probably high in search.

Yuri is a brand in stock photography...He need much much less marketing compared with one of us; even if we had a comparable portfolio in  terms of quality and quantity.

The strangest thing about PD illustrations is happening SS... SS accepts stamp photographs as editorial but vintage illustrations ( with much higher selling potential) their reject them ( even as editorial)...

Why not set her up a website with a few before/after examples, and a costing guide, that way people can make a better judgement of her standard or work.

I wish her all the best.

excellent idea... I'm may be interested in her services to...

Copyrights can be sold, can't they? So even if you find a book from 1820 the rights could have been sold at some point and now be owned by someone else? Can't believe that any site allowed these in the first place when there's so much uncertainty regarding the copyright.

After ''life + 70'' or life + whatever ( different countries) the artwork copyright expired and ca not be restored. In case of companies they can release the artwork ( if they bought the copyrights from the creator) in Public domain even in the lifetime of the original creator.

let me give you a very popular example :

We all know Santa Claus ... the fat old man dressed in red and white long beard was created in early 1930 by COCA COLA Company for a advertising campaign. The stock sites are full of various designs incorporating the red dressed old man with white beard. Who hold the copyrights for that description of Santa???

I believe it's the same with the PD illustrations from old books

PS. i believe more than 97% of the sold PD vintage illustrations were used as Editorial or in editorial limits. The illustrations are by nature editorials designs.

I think that description originated with the poem Twas the Night Before Christmas by Moore, who published it in 1823.  He died in 1863 so the copyright most likely has expired.  The later ones just put drawings to the previous description - not sure who owns the copyright.

I know . but the first ''modern'' illustration of Santa was made by Coca Cola ( present day version). According to present day Copyright laws the original owner of the design still holds the copyright of the work even if the original was modified. The artist who modify the image holds the copyright only on the modification ... not the whole design.

I personally believe that Coca Cola still holds the legal / legitimate copyright on Santa ( in US the corporate Copyrights are 95 years) until 2025; but the phenomenon took such large amplitude worldwide and today is spread everywhere and uncontrollable. That's why no one has been sued by Coca Cola for Santa

I see quite a few illustrators whose portfolios are full of what seems to be scans of old illustrations (can't imagine they're actually drawing them by hand, judging by the number of images in some portfolios). How can you tell for sure that the copyright has expired? And do all sites accept this kind of vectors?

Ask Mophart on PM
He is scanning master blaster of that old crap. His pointer finger is shorter than his small finger just because of pressing scan button on his scanner milions of times, and after he dog down trace option in vector programs he becomes The Short Finger Pointer King.
First you must ask yourself did you want this kind of future of yourself :o

First of all don't blend business with fun photography.... to answer your question : Yes, if is legally and profitable.

Personally, I'm glad SS stopped accepting these kind of images. In my opinion, it undermines the credibility of the whole industry and those of us who work hard to create original images.

You don't photograph a PD illustration ( created by somebody else ) and claim that is yours. Those who sells PD illustrations , they selling only a high resolution copy of that work without claiming the drawing to be their original work. A big part of the work sold as PD can not be found elsewhere.

You can't (because laws are so different in different countries). Anything pre 1800 should be fair game though unless it is owned by a museum.

Anything pre 1885 should be OK. (Can you give me a scenario of a 1884 image that is still copyrighted?)

...

If it was an 1884 image from a 10 year old Mexican who lived to be 100 then it could still be in copyright 'til 2074 (highly hypothetical) - I don't know, I'm not a lawyer. I do know that some sites won't accept them though.

Assuming the author created the work at his birth  ;)....

There is another possibility : the author sold the works ( and the copyrights) to the books editure... and the editure release the content of the drawings in PD.. after a certain number of years say...100.

If the original work was published before 1885 ( when the first copyright international low was made, and all world countries adopted) the illustrations are in Public Domain. For more recent work is a little bit hard to find if the copyrights expired... different countries have different laws. Ex: in US is life+70 years ( life of the author and 70 years after his death) in Mexico is life + 100 Years.

There are some agencies that accepts this type of work ( but you must be very selective and upload only the most important and representative drawings)

The best selling agency that accepted this type of work (Shutterstock) with huge selling potential , stopped accepted them from June this year... not even as editorial.

iStock: Worst month for dls since July 2007. Worst month for $$ since May 2011.

Compared to Sept 2011: $$ down >26%; dls down >50%
Compared to Aug 2012:  $$ down   >5%; dls down c23%
2 good ELs in Sept meant the $$ weren't as low as the dls suggest, because neither last Sept or last month had any Els.
More ironically, the low dls combined with the good ELs to make the dire month of Sept 2012 my best ever for RPD, which illustrates why I've never thought RPD was very useful.

Alamy: 2 lowish value dls; disappointing.

October has started just as poorly. I need to work out a PlanB.

Sorry to hear that. People are screaming BMEs everywhere? I doubt it. Not a cosolation but I really dont think too many independants here are doing all that much better.

I believe many independents here are doing well. the reason is simple: they don't rely only on one agency. If IS is goes down SS is up. Or like in my case last month... FT ( for a long period of time my second best earner) was down compared with July , DT was at + 250% compared with July, and that compensate....

The economy is supposedly in a very bad state and at the same time most people report here BME, or at least a steady rise of earnings. What's so special about this business that it's been completely resistant to problems in the whole economy for the past 5 years ?
For me it was a BME as well. Both on SS and Fotolia (my two best earners ).

I believe is simple economics and marketing... in time of economic crisis ( when everybody spends more rationally ) advertising agencies must produce more publicity to be able get the money out of population pockets.

I believe the World economic crisis helped allot the microstock industry.

in my case :)

Paypal - 1$ = 3.50 RON
Market 1$= 3.45 RON

 ;D

This is possible only at one big commercial bank. they take in consideration the Paypal exchange rate not the market or national bank exchange rate.

Glad to see this thread.  I had 32 sales, but the summary page shows only 1.

Has anyone contacted SS about this?  Are they aware of/working on it?

same here....

325
Yesterday were reviewed 4 particular pictures... two of them were accepted and two declined. All four pictures are at the same resolution, object, quality. the reason for declined ones was: Trademark. not even one has a trademark sign/logo on them.

This experience can mean two thinks:

1. SS is using some sort of software as a filter before review , and the ''filtered''  images end up for a second ''human'' review. In this case the soft decided that two of my pics have trademark logos/brands and rejects them..... and the human reviewer accepted the other 2.

2. same bench of images are reviewed by multiple reviewers and one person receive two pics and another one the other two.

I can't find other explanation in my case.

Or, the automated filter accepted 2 and the human reviewer rejected 2  ;D

I don't believe SS is letting a soft to do all the job. OK, the software is filtering the images ( sharpness, resolution, colors etc.) but the final review is still made by people.

The reason is very simple .... how will a software judge the concept of a photography??? .... when all agencies are telling us  to came with new concepts.
