I have a couple of points which as a submitter come down to money $$$ or in this case .
First you are paying out 40% good but not great (50%) and definately not the best (70%). However, i have been stung by supporting two sites early on which had I waited i would have got a better deal (ie fotolias 20c per upload and I think LO did a 50% commision for life of photo, I got their credits which are better than nothing (just)). Since you are trying to attract photos why dont you do a higher commission for those who get in early. If you dont, how can you guarantee i wont get stung by joining in quick and you decide in the future to offer such things. Second, do you have teirs if we sell lots of photos (ie. istock cannisters) or are we stuck on 40% for life? Third: you have a affilitate program - Yay. It last for only 6 months - Hmmm You have no sales so we get no reward for referring photographers - boo. I guess the question is is why should we support you. Since you pay just over half of what FP does, I would prefer you to die out and you sales to go to FP (I am still hoping istock die and all their sales go to FP to but I dont hold my breath). Still not sure about joining another site. 304

I use the imagemanager. Still takes the same time though.
note that istock is stricker on keywords aswell so I delete a lot as I go through. 305

I did a search and they have zero of that subjectA birds a bird, get over it ![]() ![]() ![]() i agree all sites should try to limit the amount of the "too many" rejections. So what if they have 1000's of 2mp shots of something, surely new 8 - 12mp shots are better. This way they constantly revolve their photos. Start by deleting photos that haven't sold in 3 years (automatically). it wont be much but it is better than nothing. 308

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon has announced the D40x« on: March 06, 2007, 12:39 »
I think Canon needs to bring something out soon. Loyal customers may stay with them but new customers will go with Nikon as the cameras are newer etc. once you are with a system, you are less likely to change. You therefore lose out on future sales. With the large growth in the DSLR market, you cant afford to miss the boat.
I dont think a new 1Ds will do this. they need a new 30D or a cut price 5D. 313
Cameras / Lenses / Nikon has announced the D40x« on: March 06, 2007, 06:12 »
After only 4 months or so, they have upgraded the 6mp sensor to 10mp along with a few other changes.
This takes the Canon 400D head on at a lower price point. 314

Off Topic / Re: income tax deductions« on: March 06, 2007, 02:35 »
What country are you in as this makes a big difference.
I am in the UK and I dont declare the income. This is technically correct for myself based on my particular situation. This will not work for UK citizens. When I return to NZ, I will try to classify it as "hobby" income in which case it is not taxable. This means I cant claim deductions. 316

Looks fresh and bold but it seems to be designed for wide monitors (although so does this site as I have a scroll bar at the bottom - never noticed that before??).
Other than that I dont think there have been any changes. Maybe a new marketing push? It is looking a bit more professional so maybe they will start promoting more. 322
General Stock Discussion / Re: Upload seasonal images out of season?« on: March 04, 2007, 10:07 »
Pictures can sell at any time. Remember that winter is summer in the other hemisphere, thought christmas only comes once a year. however, designers buy in advance.
I would upload when you can with the exception of maybe SS which due to the new photo effect, i t might better to try and time it, I just dont know when that time will be. 323

General Stock Discussion / Re: Full Time or Part Time?« on: March 04, 2007, 04:30 »Odd thing I've noticed about this site: Nobody seems to talk about money. Why is that? It might prove helpful to compare portfolio productivity. In general in society, money is a taboo subject. I guess the same here. I guess it is also because some people do it as a hobby compared to full time like you. You are also an pro as opposed to me who are using it as a learning experience and a hobby. The problem with money is that it depends on portfolio size. Which is why when we do monthly statistic, we do percentages. Whether you have 100 or 1000 a percentage can be compared. Maybe some other statistics could be compared without talking absolute $$$. Like $ per download (ie. SS will be 0.25 unless there is a EL). Another statistic which is bandied around sometimes is how much per photo per year. THis is used as a comparison to macro stock. ie. if I put 1000 photos up on macro and micro, how much can I expect per year - I think $12 is commonly referred to but depends on model release etc. The problem with this is how do you calcuate it. I have say 500 photos but only 300 have been accepted. Do I calcuate on 300 or 500. If you only have one site, you would use photos on line. With micro, you could be on 10 sites with between say 100 and 500 photos. I have a spreadsheet that calcuates it two different ways and come out at either $8-9 or $12 per year per photo depending on whether I use total photos avaliable or just the "average" photos on line. 325

Not sure how big it is but I might be able to email it to you??
Alternatives is Microsoft has brought out their own version. It is similar. Problems are it takes a while to load up the first time. Someone also said it talks back to microsoft?? I am currently using prostockmaster. Works good and has a generate feature (pretty hit and miss). Not using the upload anymore as the 5 limit is an issue. |
