Does anyone know some good resources explaing how generative AI art works ?

I was wondering if the AI image is just a mosaic of tiny parts of other images, or does it "paint" a new image from scratch ? For instance let's say we have a prompt where the main subject is a cat. Is it possible that an eye or nose of that cat is just taken from some photograph in the internet ?

some ML use mosaics, but not in  th e way you describe -

anyone remember 'El Topo' - it was the Rocky Horror of its day? - this shows stills from a movie that doesn't exist & explains how the AI works

many other references/explanations posted several times in this thread

AI is already or will be in every sector of business. I won't spoil the reading too but if there's repetition, replication or redundancy in the business its a clue that tasks/processes will change. One of the things that call my attention was the scalability of companies with AI and Personalization for AI in product and Service design.
...

i could have used an AI when i did computer consulting - one company was sending out 12 copies of a particular report - after days of interviews I discovered only 2 recipients actually used the report -the others just filed it 'in case they needed it'.  in another case i built a system to track  rfid on freight cars to show that buyers were using the cars for free storage - costing my client millions.  an Ai could have done the analysis directly. in either case i would have been freed to work on more interestig problems

But requirements for 2021. were made in beginning of 2021. Requirements for 2022. were never made and 2022. has ended, so you know, it is not possible for AS to set rules for 2022. anymore and it is not possible for us to meet these rules because they don't exist.

Yes, AS people could theoretically be kind and give us codes because they like us  ;D (and not because they want us to upload, sell, earn money), but I don't think it is very likely.
of course it's still possible - all AS has to do is describe how they're going to select who gets the bonus. absolutely no reason they had to do it on 1/1/22

still waiting for any doom-prophets to make a $ bet on their 'knowledge'

Id put $20 down that its not coming back for this year, but what do I get if I win?
i'll take your bet - if AS doesnt give bonus codes this year i'll send you $20 by paypal

No, Adobe is not giving out free subscriptions anymore. ...

how do you know this?
there has been no official announcement about free subscriptions

To me it's common sense. It's called "Contributors Bonus Program" and not "free softwear" for a reason..... But in 2022 no Contributor bonus program was announced. 2022 is now over. How can Adobe announce a "Contributors Bonus Program 2022" when 2022 is already over? ...

you have no idea what you're talking about!  - MANY of us rec'd bonus codes for 2022. the discussion has mostly been about whether there will be bonuses for 2023 and Mat has repeatedly said no decision has been made (YET ) we're barely into the new year

No, we received bonus codes in 2022 for the 2021 bonus program...  ::)

Bonus program 2021: https://helpx.adobe.com/stock/contributor/help/royalty-details.html
"For our active Contributors, based on the number of downloads your photos, illustrations, vectors, and videos receive during the 2021 calendar year, you can earn complimentary access to one of the following plans for one year"
"bonuses will be determined in January 2022, and codes will be issued in February 2022[/b]. "

This page has never been updated to any 2022 bonus program information.

we're talking past each  other w?o using the same terms - of course the bonus was based on 2021 sales! - how could it be elsewise? but the actual bonus was applied in 2022

the key is that the info was sent in January - not Jan FIRST, so the conclusion that there will be no bonus is premature at best

It is obvious. In previous years they announced rules in beginning of year to motivate us to upload. They didn't do that in 2022. so there were no requirements to meet for getting free subscription.

have you even bothered to read the thread before joining U in posting blatantly false information? the first posts are about the 2022 codes that were sent out

Generative AI will kill the business of illustrators as we know it in less than 6 months, specially the ones who make their living from stock illustrations. Stock photography will last maybe one more year. Most agencies will go out of business.
any luddites willing to put real $ behind their apocalyptic predictions?

And does anyone even know what programs can generate these images? And what are the PC requirements?

I agree - I'd be interested in checking out the software too. Which application(s) are people using to do this? Thanks! Please feel free to PM or post here, thanks!

i've been using DALL-E & pleased w the results when i use it for illustrations - it's expanded my reach as it's an area i could approach.  you get 15 free tries each month

Tony Northrup says AI will eventually replace 95% of stock photography.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VRbt8GufeY...

income from existing portfolios will continue - SS would need almost 4 BILLION AI images to form 95% of their offering (assuming zero new images sent in)

the biggest factor will be how many abandon stock altogether, which should remain small for some time

713
I use photoshop with different results, as said before the final upscale mostly depend on the start image resolution and details.
By the way, upscaling is a pain and it's hard to predict results also because the AI upscaling is not really simply "upscale", it's a rework with additional details that sometimes change the image in casual but important points

i get much better results with GigaAI, but do check after running a batch

you can control for noise suppression & sharpen & I keep these low

maybe  mom likes me better, but i get $.33-$43 per individual sale.  and the monthly royalty payments for 'elements used' is 30-50% more than AS income.

Yes, Steve, Topaz has a free trial, but it is not worth it?
First I downloaded Topaz, which is very very big! 1Giga?
Then I tried it. BUT there is a watermark from them on it. so, only if you pay them, you get it without their watermark.
I was really angry about it. As many other apps: FREE trail just means, TRY it but do not get any of the results to work with, because watermarked ordto small size.
I will try to find a free version, which got hacked somewhere instead. Because the app is really good. but I cannot and do not want to invest. for that I do not earn enough.

as you say, it's common - that's the difference between a free version (lacking some features) and a free trial version.  topaz has greatly improved my acceptances at all agncies & reduced the time i spend ind PS re-processing

In 10 years the microstock business as we know it will not exist, 90% of the regular clients of the agencies will stop buying subscriptions and will generate their own images using artificial intelligence programs. What is going to happen in the future is that little by little the sales of microstock will disappear and many people will give up and dedicate themselves to something else. One after another the agencies will disappear or declare bankruptcy.
I think ten years is optimistic

or wishful thinking - the agencies are adapting to new technologies, while many here are whinging rather than exploring how they can move with the times - again - dancing with elephants

some final comments

This is most likely, why SS is planning to obtain the contributors' consent, before allowing further use of their images in AI training. They want to cover their a@@ and prevent plagiarism accusations, when those exceptions (you admit possible) will happen.

that's not what they said - they already trained on their existing dataset. they said they might give a way to opt out of FUTURE inclusion
Quote
PS. The output was garbage because you said that none of the results represented the unique image you tried to compare it against. So a customer attempting to create that unique image via AI will fail and will have no option but to buy it directly from you.

that's not what i said! since you refused to back up your claim, i did a quick test using a phrase that used mostly my images on SS, and highly placed images on google. according to your untested claims, that might result in i mages that clearly violated my copyright - as i reported - none of the results looked like mine, BUT they did show a shaman in India which was what was asked for - rather than garbage, the algorithm performed just as it should, not as you predicted

I only pointed out that this scenario is possible and you seem to agree with me, even if you call it a "strawman argument".

I'm not going to spend time looking for an example. It will take too long for me, but it may pop-up, eventually. This is what crowd-sourcing is good at.

The world is not stuck in it the present. There will always be some new things, for which only a limited set of photos will be available for training.

When such case will be found, then the case and maybe even the system might be challenged by lawyers, the same way plagiarism is normally challenged.
you obviously don't know what a strawman argument is...
you made a silly, irrelevant claim, so it IS your responsibility to at least give an example of a phrase that would only find one artist's images out of 300,000,000

i actually did do a search for 'shaman puri india' - on SS 26 of only 27 are mine; google images show mine as 22 of first 25. then i used that phrase in DALL-E and it gave 4 completely different images, none of which remotely resembled mine in sadhu or temple bkgd

and when i required Puri in the google search, it showed only 30 images total, 17 of mine. one of the images was a map of korea,  one retail ad for a box of sp.ices and 2 others w no shaman at all

your turn!!!!!!!!!!!

"Une hirondelle ne fait pas le printemps".

This is very much applicable in science when you want to validate a hypothesis.
The fact that you found 1, 2, 10, or 1,000 examples matching it, is not sufficient to make it a theory.
One single counter-example is enough to disprove it.

you're making my case for me!  i never claimed there was NO possibility, but it's extremely unlikely and you shouldn't skip those nice spring days!  you're throwing out an entire new tool because of something that that's unlikely to happen in our lifetime - hence homme de paille

you're also distorting the argument - if your theory won't survive  1 odd result, then it is a poor theory - but that's never been the case here.

You have no idea if your images were even used by the algorithm when you did your isolated "experiments" (which is rather likely to be true, since its output was garbage)
again, making my point -  you have yet to even suggest a possible phrase that would use only 1 artist's images.  even if you enter an image for the ai, the result will not match the original!

re 'garbage' - not sure what you mean since you didn't see my result - my results were pretty decent, tho i dont usually ask for a photo, just illustrations. did you h ave different results? or are you just making it up as you go along?

My advice for those who have niche images (maybe even for you with your rather unique temple) is to opt out of the AI training deal, as soon as it will become possible, so the customers have no other option but to buy from you and delay as long as possible the competition from AI on your unique topics.

actually the reason i chose that phrase was because i thought it highly unlikely anyone would ever use that phrase & it had so few results on SS.  (the phrase came to mind since i had recently blogged on this experience)

instead people are more likely to find it thru more generic tags like 'hindu shaman' (most of mine still on 1st page of 6

General Stock Discussion / Re: This month's sales
« on: January 03, 2023, 14:01 »
My only comment is that from where I sit (mostly photo portfolio) SS revenues are declining and AS revenues are increasing.

the more important question is which agency produces the most income?  for me SS consistently earns about twice what AS does.

Used to be that SS was on top, more than the rest added together, but this year, (and last year since the new deal) SS is half and Adobe has more than doubled for me. I don't expect it's the same for everyone and I have no video, plus 90% of the images on SS are not acceptable on AS and visa versa. Apple and Oranges, except for the dollars part.

Nice bonus, I still squander my earnings on new gear, cameras, lenses, special equipment, or limited release scotch. IS paid for a bottle of Orkney Highland Park cask strength release No. 2, and WS bought me a cask strength Glenlivet Enigma.

I got this fine Nikon TME dark field microscope, used, and I've been playing with the objectives for macro. Might be nice to get it working and use the camera mount?

love your self-portrait!

How do the majority of people who made income from microstock in 2012 do ten years later?

down about 10% since 2012, but next 5 years increased over 2012 by 50%

723

I'll try to make this easier for you to understand. Everyone doesn't own or drive a car. And they are doing just fine. Some people can't afford a car and they are also doing just fine. Plenty of people, that is. They never transitioned into what replaced the horse and buggy.

not that it really matters, but

I wouldn't be happy to be dropping in someone else's skies. Most sites require you to own the copyright to all elements you use.

Drop in your own!

PS has skies you can use freely & i've added my own

i use it when i have overcast skies, sometimes just to add a bluer sky, others for a dramatic effect. and they do sell more than the drap shots in same sequence
