In my opinion, just about every comment so far is a good point.  A lot of work still needs to be done.  Applause for the effort.  Keep at it!

I like uploading to Adobe Stock but wish they'd earn more.  For me Pond5 and Shutterstock are the highest and earners and then Adobe Stock and Storyblocks compete for 3rd and 4th, but earn a lot less than the top 2.  Adobe Stock is starting do better each month though.

I love hearing that you're trying to expand past the constant grind of shooting, processing, and uploading stock footage.  I've been at it for almost 3 years and I know it can leave you wanting to do more, even after you get to point of paying all your bills with it.  Over the last couple years I've been slowly building a website to act as a home base for all the multi-media content I produce.  It started simple with just links to all my portfolios.  I then used Nimia to embed my portfolio on different pages of my site, but saw very few sales from that.  Over time it's been evolving in the direction of a production company website.  The plan is to offer stock footage/photos, art prints, and video/photo services.  I've started accounts in various social media sites but Youtube and Instagram have been the main focus recently.  Some of this is already happening and some is almost ready to be live.  I'm definitely not done making mistakes to figure this whole thing out but I thought I'd share some of my strategies on this topic.  The website will continue to look more professional over time, but I don't think I'll stop the grind of submitting to micro stock agencies.

Here's the site if you wanna look around:

(Please take into consideration I am not a website designer and it's still being built)

I have to agree with others... 12k clips should be wearing much more.  Could be a lot of factors.  Adding a link to your portfolio could bring some good constructive criticism to help you out with this.  I've uploaded about 1,200 clips in less than 3 years at Pond5 and earning over a thousand dollars per month.  I'm sure there's people with an even better sales to portfolio size ratio.

Really great work! Which camera do you use?

regards

Thanks!  I use a Panasonic GH4 and Phantom 4 Pro, for now.  GH4 might need a new upgraded companion soon.

Really good footage. Excellent drone shots and I like the color grading too.
I haven't flown my bird for several months now, as they introduced a very unclear "rule" here in the UK: at least 150m from buildings in "built up areas" (whatever that means).
Also every single country here in old Europe has different rules, so it is getting very hard.
I have gone back to shooting mainly timelapses

Yeah it's getting tricky to keep up with drone rules everywhere.  I think the main think is to just be safe.

I make edits of some of my filming adventures and put them in a youtube playlist.  Sometimes it's just edited stock footage and sometimes it's a mix of behind the scenes shots and stock footy.  I added a watermark but honestly wouldn't worry about it too much.  Not sure if this has increased sales but it does drive traffic to my website which I eventually planning on building up, and this could increase sales.

In the past we too tried uploading stock files to many agencies... but we started to delete everywhere where we rarely get sales. It's waste of time uploading if it's not profitable.

Is it just me, or is it slightly ironic that you attempted to avoid wasting time doing things that aren't profitable, by actually wasting time doing something that isn't profitable in the slightest (deleting files)? Keeping them where they are might bring in a tiny bit of revenue, no matter how small... deleting them is guaranteed to not bring you in any revenue.

Yeah, I still don't understand why anyone would take the time to delete files or an account.  This business requires not stop shooting and processing clips.  Why halt that to delete assets that are already online making money, no matter how little.  Time is money and that would literally be loosing money to loose more money.

Less than 3 years...yeah, I felt the same way when I was in this less than 3 years. I was making thousands each month and every year my earnings went up. Talk to us in another 3 years.

Hey maybe you're right and I'll learn my lesson.  I still think that if my sales decrease over the years, the least productive thing I could do is get on here and complain.  This website has a lot of knowledge to pick up on about this industry... just so much negativity to look through to find it.

85
Yo this microstock industry is amazing.  I was introduced less than 3 years to an industry where I can shoot what I want, when I want, and make money uploading it from home.  Unstable?  If you say so... after 3 years of working at it part time I'm making thousands of dollars a month and that just keeps going up.  Common sense tells me not to put all my eggs in this basket, but my growth and sales numbers tell me to go all in.

With all the negativity on the internet, this forum is still where I see the most complaining and negative comments.  Sometimes I wonder about these people complaining and what the percentage of time spent creating new content is compared to time spent complaining on this forum about an industry that is nothing but a great opportunity to work for yourself.

Summary:  Quit wasting time complaining about low sales and start creating content worth selling!

Shutterstock.com / Re: Slow november?
« on: November 28, 2017, 17:58 »
Oct was my BME and Nov is getting close.  Must have been some kinda Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale because I've had a surge in sales the last couple days.  Last year the holiday months were bad for me so I shot a bunch of winter stuff to help this season.

Some very informative responses and then there's some great rants here.  I'm still with Getty/iStock after a couple years and I'll give some reasons why I'm not thrilled about them.

1)  Uploading high quality 4K videos and seeing them sell for under a dollar.  I don't care if it's a small res web purchase.  If I put in the work to produce videos at a certain level, I can't help but be disappointed with that low of return.

2)  Delayed sales reporting is ridiculous.  If all these smaller companies can report live sales, it shouldn't be that hard.  Probably just a strategy to hide the low payouts.

3)  This is not my personal experience, but I read about a contributor receiving an email from them saying they made a mistake and payed him too much last month.  Now his next couple months of earnings will be withheld until it's payed back.  That would really piss me off!

Even with these points combined with all the other contributors points, I still see it as counter productive to delete my files and close my account.  I don't buy into the theory that my files there are competing with my same files on other sites.  I believe most customers buy content from the site they're already comfortable with and are already logged onto.  I truly don't think pulling my portfolio will increase my sales on other sites.

Now would I recommend a newbie to upload there... Hell No!

Adobe Stock / Re: Two new Adobe Stock features
« on: October 19, 2017, 22:30 »
Thanks for presenting these features Matt.  Here's my portfolio with a banner photo and 1 collection.  After making the collection I with a few hundred assets, I wish I could select multiple clips faster.  Maybe a select all for the page and also be able to select the whole box around the clip instead of just that small box in the corner.

Is there anyone selling videos on their personal or business website that could recommend a plug in.  I've built my business website with Squarespace and would like to find a way of uploading thousands of videos to a website with a customizable plug in to embed to my Squarespace website.  I currently am doing that by embedding my Nimia portfolio, but I would like to cut out the middle man and sell directly.  Any suggestions?

General Stock Discussion / Re: September Sales
« on: October 03, 2017, 15:07 »
Still waiting a few weeks for iStock and Dissolve data but it's looking like my best month so far

I love the features at Nimia!  Sales are very low though.  I can create sets to embed to different pages on my website which allow people to buy footage directly from my site.  That's pretty cool.  I'm also able to download my own files back incase of a hard drive crash.  That's a free backup system.  They even have ways to do direct sales, which I haven't tried yet, but seems cool.  But yes, with all the work to get videos uploaded and such low sales, You really gotta love those features to make it worth your while.  They just need to get more sales!

92
I pulled all my photos from Pond5 a few months ago and video sales went up.  Video sales were already going up but I'm pretty sure there's a conspiracy going on!  My advice, everyone should delete all there photos immediately.

93
I think everyone is a bit hung up on it purely due to the fact it's a photography course. If it was a marketing seminar, a bread baking party, or a swingers event, then would anybody care if the event organiser hadn't shot the photo they'd used to illustrate the country the course is being held in? Probably not.

Hey if I'm gonna attend a swingers event, I don't want any misleading photos!

General - Stock Video / Re: videoblocks or istockvideo best earner?
« on: September 26, 2017, 09:53 »
Previously, I would say Videoblocks by far, but last month iStock earned more for the first time.

95
She might not even be a real person.  Just a fake identity as a front for whoever set this system.  That's what I'd do if I were to set up an unethical thing like this.

96
The industry will never go backwards to this "golden era" people speak of.  I do like the idea of much higher standards from curators and deleting old, low quality content... even whole portfolios.  I started in 2015, apparently after this "golden era", but my monthly income keeps going up as I keep adding clips to my portfolio.  Last month (July) was actually my best month ever on Shutterstock.  I guess just keep up with modern trends and work your ass off!

97
Yes.  I was filming aerial shots of boating and inner tubing on Lake Roosevelt and they look pretty smoky.  Weird because the boat and tubes look vibrant with color but the backgrounds look like a cloudy day.

98
Holy crap!  Seems like every other month a new company makes this exact same post.  If a new company wants to learn how to get a positive response in this forum, just read through all the mistakes the past few new companies have made.  How can you not thinking the contributors earning percentage is important information to put in your original post?

99
No complaints, looks like a good opportunity.  Thanks!

I'm trying to find out a good way of emailing a model/talent release to people that's easy for them to fill out and send back, that doesn't require them to print and scan it.  I've been using the Easy Release app for all my releases in person but I'm looking for a way to email releases with a curser at all the required boxes and an E-Signature or signature that auto fills when they type their name.  This type of thing is not my specialty so any information would help, thanks.

And yes I know the professional thing would be to have people sign a release before filming.  I've been doing aerial work of kayaking and rafting.  Sometimes I'm told a certain part of a river to post up at and don't get to see some of the people before or after the float.  This example is what created the issue.
