Canva / Re: Notice of violation emails
« on: February 29, 2024, 08:24 »
Hi there,

Apologies for the concern around the messaging here. I have shared the feedback here with our team.

The same email is currently being sent for all content removals, whether very serious violations of our Acceptable Use Policy, or contributed content removed from Creators as part of ongoing content library audits.

The messaging around "suspension" is not intended for the latter case; so please don't be alarmed by this, and you don't need to worry about account suspension.

Hope this helps!

Canva / Re: Almost any images get rejected instantly?!
« on: November 06, 2023, 19:00 »
I tried my luck again with 100 backgrounds (made with camera and not with AI) and within 2 seconds (looked at the clock) 94 were rejected and I don't even see a rejection reason - but how to add a rejection reason in 2 seconds too ;-)

In an upload before that, about 20 of 150 images had come at least after "in review" - 2 days later these 18 were also rejected -> rejection rate 99%.
And no, I upload there only things that were accepted on the relevant agencies without major problems.
Sorry to hear that! I've sent you a PM, would love to take a look :)

canva hasn't accepted me, but through istock/getty i have many of my photos on canva

how can I choose not to be in your AI training program and, if it's not an option, how will I get paid for my work?

thank you
Hi there, sorry but you would have to raise these matters with iStock/Getty.

It seems the magic has already been trained off of our work and the opt out just means you won't get paid for it?

How can you still opt out if the magic is already trained?
All of Canva's first-party generative AI features are only trained on licensed data with consent. We have not trained or released any first-party generative AI features that have been trained on Creator data (while we're offering a notice period and opt-out).

Some of our existing Magic Studio features are powered by third party partners and open source models, of which we are increasingly mandating a requirement to use fully-licensed datasets. To clarify, we also have not licensed Creator data to third parties, and we have technological and contractual terms that aim to prevent third parties from using Creator data without licensing.

We are committing $200 million over the next 3 years to AI and Creator royalties :)

Cool. According to stats I found online Canva had over over 100 million stock images, videos, and graphic elements and over 610,000 templates last year.
So 200.000.000$ divided through (over) 100.610.000 contributor items divided through three years means less than 0.66$ per image/video/graphic/template per year. Doesn't sound as exciting as $200 million anymore.

When it comes to the raw number of contributor images, it's important to note that much of our stock content is not used at all (0 usage in a month), or very low (1-2 usages a month). We work with content partners to supplement our library in bulk, but  compensate based on usages and volume. That means that the number of contributed items isn't necessarily the most appropriate figure to look at.

Dear DannyCanva,

will we, as contributors, be able to see in the statement how much we have received via AI royalties and how much we have received via "normal" royalties per month?
We would be very pleased to receive an answer :-)

Have a nice day@all,
Michael
Yes :)

Hi @dannycanva can you please clarify if the contributor ai opt-in / opt-out option is permanent or not? Are we able to opt-out at a later date after opting-in, and vice-versa?
No, it isn't permanent. You can opt-out at a later date, and if you opt-out, you can opt-in at a later date.

If you opt out right now, you will not receive the initial one-time bonus royalties; however if you opt-back-in at a later point in time, you will still receive the monthly AI royalties.

Danny at Canva where is the option to opt OUT : "(b) If you do not want Canva, its affiliates or its third party service providers to use your Stock Media to develop and improve artificial intelligence or machine learning models you can opt-out by filling out this form."

If "this form," is supposed to be a clickable hyperlink, it's not.

The form is here: https://www.canva.com/en_au/help/creators-support-form/

Select "Do not allow Canva or its partners to learn from my Creator content to improve AI" and your contributions will not be used for AI training. You also will not receive additional AI royalties, which will be paid in ~20 days. AI royalties will continued to be paid each and every month going forward.

We are providing everyone with a 20 day notification period, in which we are not starting AI training, so people have a chance to opt out if they would like.

Does Canva allow for presentations to be done online, via their web site? I see this text on their web site:

"Collaborate, edit, and present on-the-go
Easily edit slides and present from anywhere using Canvas presentation software, on any browser or mobile device."

I think that means that there's no download involved for this type of use but Canva's telling you that will count towards your payout
That's correct. Previously, Canva's template royalties worked on the basis of exports, which didn't count cases like full-screen presenting of a presentation, or the printing of a Print product.

There are no changes to the overall size of the royalty pool; it's more about making our template royalty system more fair for all Creators and design types.

This change also has no impact on the elements royalty pool, or elements creators. The royalty pools for templates and ingredients (elements, photos, video, etc) are separate.

How would you like stock photography platforms to handle the uploading of AI-generated content?

Should there be a difference between completely-AI-generated content, and AI-assisted content in which there is substantial human work and editing involved?

If AI-generated content is allowed, should royalties and earnings of the AI-generated content be shared with human creators? If so, what share would be appropriate?

Yes, the amount of thieves on etsy is insane. Not helped by dozens of youtube videos telling people how to steal work from Canva and make SVG vectors to sell on Etsy, and saying legally its fine.

A lot of these thieves have also learned how to file file a counter notice and Etsy will keep selling  their work even after you DMCA it.

Gah. I've alerted our legal team to those videos, we have got these taken done by the past but they keep popping up :(

If you have a few examples of sellers filing improper counter-notices to your content, please send evidence to danny+copyright [at] canva and I would like to follow up with our contacts at Etsy

Hello! Our royalty pool continues to grow proportionally as Canva's subscription revenue grows. We recognise content and contributors as an critical part of Canva's value proposition and success, and our content business model relies on using content to (1) attract more users and paying subscribers, which gives us more money to (2) pay more royalties to contributors, which in turn attracts more users and paying subscribers.

I'd share a detailed graph of our royalty pool if possible, but that can be reverse engineered into exact numbers around our revenue growth and financials; which isn't something we can share as a private company in a highly competitive industry. I can share the following that the May 2022 royalty pool is between +60% to +70% higher than May 2021.

Your individual earnings depend both on the size of the royalty pool, and how many usages your content gets relative to all premium content within our library.

Canva / Re: Canva Etsy Copyright Problems
« on: October 27, 2021, 05:19 »
Justanotherphotographer is correct, Canva does not allow sub-licensing of content, with an extremely limited exception ('Additional Rights for Client Designs') where a Canva design (and its licenses) can be transferred to one specific client. That is intended to cover a designer using Canva to create designs for their client, but it certainly does not extend to people reselling content to multiple people on Etsy.

Only Canva can issue licenses for content and this is done through our platform. This enables us to keep a record of licenses (so we can confirm when there is a dispute), but secondly and most importantly, pay the creator every time a Pro media is used.

In relation to Annie's link, the page states "Dont sell, redistribute, or take credit for unaltered media provided through Canva."

We are working on some detection mechanisms that educate and/or block users from exporting designs solely consisting of one unaltered high-resolution Pro media, however there will always be workarounds. We do welcome any suggestions for how we can make this more clear.

Canva / Re: Negative earnings anyone
« on: July 21, 2021, 03:26 »
Anyone else having a really bad month at Canva? Only 2 sales so far, which is higly unususal.
The vast majority of our royalties come from subscription usages these days, so looking at individual sales probably won't give you the most accurate picture.

July has been a normal / usual month for us, so there shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary with earnings when this month finishes and the royalties are paid out.

Hey Louda, have you been able to resolve this issue? We take IP very seriously, and as zsooofija mentioned, the proper channel for copyright enquiries is [email protected].

If you're finding your photos on Canva and have not licensed it to us, that's definitely something we're keen to look into.

Canva / Re: Canva, what's the plan now?
« on: September 24, 2020, 23:57 »
P.S. I can share increasing diversity and representation in our content is one of our focus areas. Empowering everyone is part of our mission and core values. We'll be testing out modest boosts for diverse imagery in search results, as well as working to add an ethnicity filter in search results (like other stock photography sites).

We are also scaling up template creation for every locale and culture. When we create templates, we often use premium photos from contributors and these can drive a lot of sales/usages/royalties. I would expect diverse content (ethnicity, different cultures, locales) to get a modest boost over the coming months and years.

« on: September 24, 2020, 23:49 »
Hey, happy to comment :)

We've significantly increased payments to contributors since April, even ignoring the 2x guarantee. These increases were to "subscription earnings"; and so it's natural to see download royalty earnings significantly decline; until you get the subscription earnings at the end of each month. The majority of contributors are earning more money than before.

I understand that some aren't. Commenting generally, older content tends to fall out of favour with our users as time goes by, so if you're seeing earning decreases I would suggest seeing whether you can refresh your Canva portfolio with newer shoots. Changes in what Canva users (and the world) searches for also affect this.

The new subscription program has been a success for us, and we hope you see it as the same. We are continuing to work on (and invest a lot of $$$ into) growing Canva Pro, and any increases in subscriptions correspond 1:1 to our royalty pools and your earnings. Our outlook and forecasts are quite positive.

Justanotherphotographer, I'd love to hear why you think it hasn't worked out as expected? Feel free to reply here, or DM me if you'd like to share details privately.

Cheers,
Danny

As mentioned by others here, we offer local currency pricing in some markets and these can be more or less than the $0.35. The values are also affected by forex conversion at that time.

If their "double earnings" are meant only for subs, we're doomed. No sales since 5th of april. Not something, I'm used too.
Unless most of our earnings are now transferred to subs, if that's the case we'll only know on the 8th-10th of May :-/
Correct, the majority of earnings have been transferred over to subs since April 6th. I know it's not ideal that there's no real time reporting for subs. We wanted to launch ASAP, this is something we're keen to look into in the future.

And just to reiterate what's already been posted here, the guarantee applies to your total earnings, it is literally "make at least 2x what you made in March", as long as you don't remove content.

Hi, I'm from Canva :)

Re payment issues:

1. I've heard from the team that March payments via PayPal are delayed due to an issue with FX. An email update will be going out shortly to affected contributors. We're working on making sure you get paid ASAP, and there is no need to contact support.

2. For our contributors on Skrill and Payoneer, you should be receiving two payments (the second one went out today). The sum of these two will reflect the correct amount for March.

Apologies for the inconvenience here. Thank you for your patience and understanding :)

I have more than 10K images there and I was in around top 30 in Canva before the drop last year. I don't see any of this subscription sales.

Hey Deyan, please see my last reply.

You will see subscription sales in the new interface, which is rolling out by next Monday. I can confirm you have subscription sales. Sorry that it's not showing up on the old dashboard.

Hi everyone,

My apologies, I jumped the gun a little bit and communicated a bit too early. The new payment report I linked is going through final stages of our QA/release process, and should be visible either this Thursday or next Monday. It looks like this:

You will be able to see your Photos Unlimited downloads and royalties there and then. Photos Unlimited usages are not reflected in the old dashboard.

Appreciate the feedback that getting contradictory information is not helpful. Originally the plan was quarterly, however we were able to increase the reporting frequency to monthly. The new dashboard that reflects this should be out very soon.
