Software / Adobe Creative Cloud site issues?
« on: March 31, 2020, 17:24 »
I don't know if anyone else has this issue. I just rebuilt my PC and loaded the Creative cloud onto it. Everything seemed to be fine. I just opened LR and the first thing that came up after the initial screen was a security alert warning that the certificate for this site had been revoked and the site should not be trusted. Clicking OK on that opened up an Adobe message that something went wrong and it was "probably on their end". WHen I dismiss that, Lightroom also closes. So I can't do anything in Lightroom as a result.

Anyone else see that?

Thanks Matt - and if anyone is wondering where to find that second number that you need to see or download your 1099, it is your Member ID which is at the bottom of the contributor account page when you are logged into the contributor site.

Hi Angela

I did find that if you go to the 123RF contributor page to the Dashboard and then to Earnings/Payment History and then select Payment history for 2018, this did exactly match the 1099 we got from that tax year. So selecting 2019 there should be the same match for this year's return.

It looks like the servers are down at the moment.

I suspect this is based on the exact amount of sales in the year, rather than what the agency has paid out to you. I think that is an accurate way of reporting earnings.

Yes, mine is about $30 out (on $5777). I don't recall what the refunds actually were last year, so I can't check that. Where do they appear in the Adobe reports?

Here is my final list of 1099-Misc forms received as of 6 March.

Creative Markets - they provide a gross statement that includes their fees
Shutterstock (this includes Bigstock)
Adobe - under the name of Fotolia
Getty/iStock
Zazzle (I finally requested payment of several years of earnings of $219 and got a 1099)
Pixels - this is Fine Art America for $623
Dreamstime
Deposit Photos
Pond5
123RF - still waiting and no response to my email to them

I had a go at explaining it in a blog post: https://backyardsilver.com/adobe-illustrative-editorial-stock-images/

I think they will have rejected yours because they are more interested in products and the illustration of those products in interesting ways. It is a very very grey line between what is a product and what is just a protected symbol I guess.

Has anyone got a 1099 form from 123RF or any idea when it might be issued?

« on: March 01, 2020, 14:28 »
I've been busy on my results as well this morning. Not too good though! $2275 compared with almost $3000 last February. Most of the agencies were down, although I did get $61 from Canstock!! A new world record...

i know i shall begin shooting video

from a drone?

Thanks! Interesting as always! I bought the Mavic 2 Pro and have been very happy so far!

This may be of interest to US readers - I did manage to pass my FAA drone pilots test after about a month of study and wrote about my experiences of that and my early learning with a drone over on the Dreamstime Blog: https://www.dreamstime.com/blog/first-commercial-steps-drone-53380

I've no idea how other countries manage this, but overall I found that exam harder than I expected although (and never forget this if you take this exam) the answers to quite a number of questions are in the legend at the front of the chart book they supply when you take the test itself.

Yes, 123RF caused me to have to submit an amended return. Extra hassle and cost. I can't see why they can't get this right!

To my mind, it depends if you are more interested in the satisfaction of a higher income per download or in the higher monthly income...

Yes, I agree - the aperture makes a big difference. However, it seems the sweet spot for sharpness is around F4 and down at F11 it gets pretty soft. So I was trying to balance getting moving items still in my photos with the smooth video and keeping the aperture around F4! I did take some dusk shots and good pretty sharp results with a shutter speed of 1 second. Any slower than that and I did see motion blur in my photos. So you are probably right about the still shots at 1/50th being OK. I was in Hawaii with the drone and so it was very bright. I used the ND16 with polarizer and usually ended up with 1/50th second at F2.8 or F4 - somewhere around there. Perhaps the ND8 would have been a better choice. Still learning every day!

Steve

145
Not really a drone question, but what is your take on the shutter speed for video? I know about the rule to use 2 x the frame rate and I have been trying to do that using ND filters. However, when the drone is out in the sky, and I want to take a still photo, I am limited to the same "slow" shutter speed unless I up the ISO, which I don't want to do. So getting a clear sharp photo seems to clash with the desire to have smooth video. A friend suggested that unless there was a lot of motion in the clip, then not using the ND filter would be fine for video even if the shutter was considerably faster than the norm - ie about 1/320th second

Great review. I've just got this drone and am working my way through all the settings, so this helped a lot!

Nice to see that your video sales are starting to contribute to a significant portion of your overall earnings

Yes, it is good to see that. Now if only I could feel more comfortable with thinking and taking videos as easily as I take photos. I guess I just have to stick at it!

Well, half way through January, I have managed to publish my own year end review of 2019. Earnings were almost the same as 2018, which would have been great had I not added a lot of images and videos during the year. Overall picture looks like this:

I decided to wait until the EyeEM earnings were published before writing about my results. Really glad I did - $22 made all the difference!

So the end result was just over $2600. I guess that is OK for the generally slow December.
Here is my growth pattern up to and including 2019.:

No, thx. I go my own way, and I'm sure it is the best for everybody.
Sorry, but I am not impressed by the table of contents, especially "how can I sell my photos and get rich". That's not my way.
It smells more like a teaser than anything else.

The first words of that chapter are (and I recognize I am giving the whole story away): You can't...
