StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert Review Times
« on: June 23, 2009, 12:15 »
You all may know from my old thread a while back that I was having problem with reviews. New images sit there for weeks until I decided to stop uploading and delete those images that sat in limbo.
But last week, (also said this in my old thread), I decided to reupload five images, that morning. By the evening all five were approved.
There must be some change going on, for the better I hope. Although the sales are not moving at all. (I have 12 dollars left before payout). Been stastic like that for a couple of months right after my best 3 months (feb, mar, april).
I haven't upload some more this week. I want to see the sales come back before I do this. So I am not sure if they had gone back to being slow reviews or not.

I hope not. I like StockXpert. Would hate to see this good site go bad. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a revival to old times. It deserves a second wind.

Realistically speaking if I would be a buyer I am already in dollar bin store anyway. Things are so cheap so I wonder if anybody is buying smaller sizes?

I really don't know what to think anymore, really ..but mela has a point there John !
If buyers can pick up a L or XL of my own images elsewhere for a few cents on sub, it's unlikely
they are going to buy the same thing from my port with you at a much much higher price.
I love the promise of a fatter commission, but it's already becoming apparent this optimism is
quite unrealistic.
Where do we go from here? I don't know! Maybe make Cutcaster contributors go image exclusive in exchange for the premium Cutcaster promises.
I guess the ball's entirely in the buyer's court for now.

Hey, it's still good to see you here John. You rock !

I was another velvia user but must agree that I sure do love the song - don't take my kodachrome away.

By the way, yea I'm pretty new to this group - have been lurking for the most part up until recently.

no need to lurk. come join the band !  ;) welcome MAF !

I think I'm gonna curl up in the corner in a fetal position and cry in my beer  :(

i guess it does make you feel like you've lost an old dear and constant companion who came with us for many memorable hours, doesn't it?  i literally "grew up" with kodachrome.
as a matter of fact, i think even the way i "see" digital images ie. how i post process digital images and color correct them,etc... could well be "conditioned" by my preference for those Kodachrome tonal inherent characteristics.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090622/ap_on_re_us/us_kodachrome_s_demise

the news is sad though inevitable. i had many great images during my formative years as a freelance photographer with this film. i am surprise it lasted this long , way after i had retired my Nikon Fs , Olympus OM2, Gossen Luna, Sekonic,etc..

even more surprised is how long this old friend lasted till today. i guess in many countries they must still be using film format even after digital became worth a changeover.

i would have loved to continue with film format, 35mm to 4by5 , if i had the money as there is something organic about them.
the digital format is fast, cheap, and no doubt safer for your lungs ; no more darkroom to breath in the nasty chemicals, etc. and of course, the ability to edit on the run.

but, i remember kodachrome, even way before paul simon dedicated a song to it.
"kodachrome, gives us the nice bright colours..."

farewell old friend.

Is this one of those backups that you can bring with you on location overseas, so you can free up your SDHC card ? I like to get one to backup my 16g panasonic card when I go back to Tunisia for excursion #2.

Veer / Re: Initial thoughts on Veer reviews
« on: June 22, 2009, 18:42 »
It seems like reviewers got overwhelmed with submissions. Everything has stopped :-)

I don't doubt that. I uploaded my first 14 new images on the 18th, right after my SV portfolio was ported over. I don't expect the reviewers to rush to my new images so soon.  Sure, the traffic must be less jammed now compared to the first 10 days, but I think the reviewers need to rest. No big hurry for me, as I already have 46 from SV. Just wish them the best that all runs smoothly.

Tan, before you go through the trouble - did you send the photo or any from the series elsewhere?  They must be exclusive for the assignment.

Yes, I know that much for the assignment. The one I submitted was shot just for the assignment, and therefore exclusive. I understand it stays that way for 12 months from today.
As for the one in my portfolio, yes too. It is an exclusive image.
I have other newly approved images that are quite appropriate for this assignment, but I cannot submit them as I already sold one on Fotolia the same day it got approved.
Thanks Pixart for asking.

Only thing is I also like to submit the one that was approved recently. How do I do this? Do I need to resubmit the image and delete my approved one? Will it be rejected if I did that?

Thanks gaja for the thread. I found your question which was similar to mine. ie. submit an existing image from your port, then disable it when it gets approved for the assignment.

awesome.
thanks to Flemish and fotographer .
I've been following your comments on Assisgnment . I was not aware of this.
Early this month I had an image approved, and got a note about Assignment.  I didn't know what it was. I thought Assignment was just another comment from someone. (lol newbie of one year, uninformed).
With your comments here, I realise what this is. For that,  I just submitted my first assignment entry a moment ago.
Only thing is I also like to submit the one that was approved recently. How do I do this? Do I need to resubmit the image and delete my approved one? Will it be rejected if I did that?

cheers everyone for helping with the information. also for those who on the other thread (title: no views) told me about the benefit of submitting to assignment.
just submitted my very first image for Assignment (kitchen).
as always, helpful ideas from members of MSG (and also DT in this instance)

Today I find my second image reaching downloads of five. This , if I am not mistaken, means it goes up one level.
What does this mean ? Any advantage to this?

Do any of you find that it helps to get a higher color rating , level increase?
Like to know your opinion on this, and how to take advantage of the ratings?
What does it mean to you?

Cheers.

P.S.
If you have a Dreamstime account, I made a blog on the same subject. You can answer there or here , wherever you prefer.

StockXpert.com / Re: Are you still uploading there??
« on: June 19, 2009, 10:07 »
I haven't uploaded at StockXpert for the past few weeks as I've been busy with a couple photoshoots and building up my Veer port.  I usually wind down uploading aroung this time of year anyway as summer I find is kinda slow for stock sales anyway.
By summer's end SS should have their tax requirements figured out (hopefully), the StockXpert debacle will have settled down, and the first signs of the viability of Veer will be coming into play. Im taking a bit of a wait and see approach over the summer.

Me too. I think that's the best thing to do.  The only thing moving are the old images on Dreamstime, StockXpert, SS,etc.. as most of us are already finding out in the other thread discussions . Summer is never a fast time anyway, so you are right, may as well top up on our SV transfer at Veer, wait for StockXpert to settle then resume uploading to all the sites when Autumn arrives. And hopefully, we will all get that new lense or camera we are planning for ourselves this Christmas

finally logged-in with my password from Veer and authorize the transfer of my SV port , signed my tax treaty form,etc..  9 days late, but i thought i wait till the traffic subsided, or at least naissance glitches smoothed-out.
really like the system . all very nice and cleanly handled. c'est tres cool !.

StockXpert.com / Re: Is StockXpert going down?
« on: June 17, 2009, 13:50 »

Yes, that's IMO what's most likely going to happen!
And that would explain this very strange statement from one of the moderators on the StockXpert forum;

Quote
In the future if there are royalty changes or other changes that you feel are unfair or that you are not happy about, you can make the decision at that time to remove your images from StockXpert. Until that day comes, I invite you to continue to upload your images to the site.

#1 . with this much we have to give StockXpert and the people working there the benefit of the doubt. I don't think they know anything more than what the bosses want them to know.
#2.  StockXpert has been a good site to us before this complication started, so I think they deserve a little patience and cooperation from us too.
#3. the statement by the moderator [ you can make the decision at that time to remove your images from StockXpert ] is something that StockXpert has allowed us to do freely, viz to delete our images
anytime we want. This is something no other sites allow us to do.
I think we should bear with them and wish them well because of this, especially point #3.
They cannot turn things around if we don't give them a chance .
If not, like the mod said, we can delete the images when the time comes that the terms are no longer fair to us.

"We have not been told that there is no plan to shut StockXpert down in the short term so you will continue to get earnings from StockXpert. In the event of it closing, you will be informed at that time and more info will be available.

Until then it is business as usual and there is no need for you to worry."

Play on words so they don't have to lie?

Not a very positive message. Every sentence uses the negative form (NOT been told, NO plan)(NO need).

Uploaded a few images this morning.  I have nothing at iStock and have no plans to join.  Uploading images to StockXpert that are NOT on IS seems like a way to defy the inevitable.  Or, maybe I'm a little naive?

And what IS the INEVITABLE?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Basic beginers camera?
« on: June 17, 2009, 08:45 »
i think the reality will probably be that you won't know what you want until you've shot a bit more.... probably most people go along the 'buy the most reasonably priced entry-level dslr' route and then upgrade when they know what their needs are.

good point. But it doesn't have to be entry level. Getting last year's model of a prosumer DSLR would not cost much nowadays. Each time a new model comes out, the previous model half in price. So I would say wiser to get last year, or the previous years' model. example is the Olympus E series. the E300 I paid over 1.5K in 2005 is now no more than 300 dollars .

i don't think this site is worth a worry. how many % does mostphotos figure in your monthly earning? 0.000000001 % ?

Wow, us, Agencies really need a makeover.  I hope people don't feel that way about our company. What a nightmare of a feeling and perception and i am sorry that some of you feel that way.  I see it being completely mutual and helping one another.

I wonder how buyers would answer this question.

i did not vote at all.  i don't think it makes a diff. but like John said, i wonder how buyers would answer this question. even more importantly I wonder big time how the sites' CEOs would answer to this.

the latter is the only thing that matters to us contributors.

Bigstock.com / Re: How are you doing at BigStock?
« on: June 17, 2009, 08:18 »
The only good thing about Big, other than that Liz and Joseph are superb Support people, is that you don't get paid 30 cents for a dl. But the sales are sllllooooow.
And sometimes, they have a reviewer that is "weird" , who calls everything he/she sees a snapshot. (rejection: THIS IS A SNAPSHOT).
Other than that, it is a wonderful site to contribute

You don't like IS?

Everybody likes IS. The problem is that IS doesn't like everybody  :P

lol well said FlemishDreams.

On the thread I started a long long time ago, I mentioned that I had a good change in StockXpert's review time ie. back to the same day approval. This is good news for me, as it is what I was getting from StockXpert from the time I joined till about 6 months ago.
Some of you say it's only because no one is uploading; which could be  bad news. depending on how you feel about StockXpert.
In my case, since the reviewers have shown an interest in my new images once again, I will get more new images ready for StockXpert, and as soon as I see my sales getting back to normal I will upload these new images.
I like to try to treat StockXpert like many of you here treat SS, in other word: I will feed the beast every time the beast works for me.

I am still confident for StockXpert to get back to normal and behave like the old StockXpert, the StockXpert we all used to like so much to contribute.

But, will I move my stuff to IS? No. I like StockXpert .

StockXpert.com / Re: Is StockXpert going down?
« on: June 16, 2009, 08:50 »
so whats the plan guys? Are you still uploading to stockxpert? On the one hand I would like to continue uploading cause its a good selling agency for me but on the other hand all my efforts (uploading time) could be wasted in a few month?!

I just renewed my uploading of new images yesterday, and they were approved . That quick. Back to the old StockXpert review time I was used to getting.  As those who read my thread on StockXpert know, this has not happened to me for a long time since November 2008. This change signals to me as a good change , that stability is once again maintained. Hopefully so.
My interpretation of the email is that "if you opted in, you can still get this by joining IS". But if you prefer you can stay on with StockXpert , except there will not be this option plan.
If , as pointed out elsewhere, they are planning to kill StockXpert, why would they resume the efficiency of their review system?

175
Well, the good, and quite ironic , news is I resumed my uploading to Stockxpert this morning, and my images were approved earlier this evening.
It doesn't sound like the action of a site that is going to be closed down soon .
So here's knocking on wood and fingers crossed for Stockxpert to rise to the challenge for all of us.
I wish them well wholeheartedly.
