A question for Leo - someone mentioned turning off the partial word search feature, giving an example that a search on Asian would also return Caucasian. What governs the returns on a network search?  Is it the setting on the network partner or would the original site search overrule the settings on the partner site?

@ShazamImages - thank you for the detailed list.  That's a huge help in understanding what I need to have backed up.

I don't know if I'm getting all the files I need as I don't fully understand what's needed for back up but as a start I installed the UpDraftPro plugin.  It was highly rated with 5 stars and the set up couldn't have been easier. ...

Are you talking about this plugin which hasn't been updated in the last two years rated with 3.7 stars?
http://wordpress.org/plugins/updraft/

No, UpdraftPro has 5 stars over 249 ratings and last update is listed as 4 days ago.

You meant UpdraftPlus, right?

Agghhhh - where's that little emoticon bashing it's head on a brick wall?  Yes. Updraft PLUS

It looks like you need the $15 add-on to back up additional files beyond the default options.

I don't know if I'm getting all the files I need as I don't fully understand what's needed for back up but as a start I installed the UpDraftPro plugin.  It was highly rated with 5 stars and the set up couldn't have been easier.  I have the basic package without any of the upgrades.  My site with about 300 files took 10 minutes to back up.  I backed up to Dropbox and can easily transfer the files to another location for added security.  There are 5 folders that backed up including one labeled db.gz which I suspect is the database and another named Uploads. In that file is a folder labeled Symbiostock_rf_content and it appears to have compressed versions of the mini-pics and the larger watermarked image.

I'm not sure that it's backing up everything I need but it was a free, easy start to get something backed up while I figure out the best option.  You may want to test it out to see if it's giving everything needed to restore.  They did say that don't back up the basic WP installation since that is easy to reinstall from WP if necessary so I guess in a total crash you might need to set up a new WP installation and load your files into that.

Is that UpdraftPro or UpdraftPlus?  I use the Plus version and it works well except the default setting it does not backup your images.

Yes, my error, it's Updraft Plus.  Is there a setting that should be triggered that does back up the images or does it require one of the paid up upgrades to back up the images or isn't that even an option?  I guess the images I'm seeing are the watermarked preview and the mini's for thumbnails.  As mentioned, I'm still trying to figure out the backup language and process.

Nice site EZeePics! Welcome aboard.  I've got a lot of food shots in my portfolio if you want to check it out. My links are full at the moment but one slot is filled with the master search link so you'll show up in search results on that line

Ok, Karen, I will add you, nice images. How many links can we add?

The limit seems to be 10 links with the standard version. I'm not sure if the premium version allows for more.  Searches will also return results from the 20 promoted keyword you enter in your profile too so is you have food as one of your site keywords you would appear on the search results of another site even if you are not one of their links when the word Food was searched.

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: Is everything stable now?
« on: August 31, 2013, 15:11 »
Blank symbiocard issue is fixed now :D

I think only cascoly could appreciate how funny this is -

for some reason I was using a "strip quotes" function to sanitize the csv file. Thats probably the dumbest coding mistake I've made to date. Oh well, fixed now.

Do we need to do something to get it to show up or will it appear after a future update?

On a side note re: stability - I'm hosted on Blue Host, using the latest WP version (3.6?) and Symbiostock 2.6.4 and the standard child theme.  Everything seems stable for me.  Test purchase worked as expected and image moved to download area.  Everything is stable at this point.

Next steps are to upgrade the site to Amanda's child theme and Leo's premium plug in.

Mine is blank too.  I also noticed last night (before I had upgraded, I had been on 2.5.6 or something in that range), that my info had dropped off of Cascoly's lists.  I wasn't showing up on the different lists where I'd been visible in the past.

161
I think those additional five options are pulling from the "Promoted Keywords" - the 20 words we can add as pointers to our site.  You don't see search results on them too often since it has to have the same promoted keyword as the search but I have seen results a few times.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS Newsletter - A collection of excuses
« on: August 29, 2013, 18:46 »
Total waste of time reading it.   The only thing I got out of it is that non-exclusive content is staying in the Main collection for at least 6 months.  That's contradictory to the initial statements that they would be shifting all content in the early weeks.  At mid year I was half way to my RC goal and optimistic that I'd at least keep my current (pathetic) rate.  Changes have been devastating to the RC count, especially when over 2/3's of my income there is coming from the PP these days.  I notice the newsletter wasn't even worthy of having it's on topic on the forums.  Nobody cares anymore.

163
My solution for getting my watermark to show on dark and light images was to include a grey drop shadow. It seems to work ok for most of the images.

If I change the watermark would it impact my images that have already been indexed?
I want to have both white and black letters in my watermark

Good question! I'm aiming at the same thing and hope I can 1) figure out how to get both B&W into my wm, and 2) figure out how to reprocess once I've figured out #1.  :-[

I'll probably try the wm re-creation and reprocessing before submitting my sitemaps. Now that (hooray!!!) I'm almost done Yoasting my original 700 uploaded images. From this point on, it should all go more smoothly.

164
Did Leo tell you what he did to fix it?  It's the middle of the night for Leo right now so you may need to wait awhile for him to respond. Someone else may be able to help if they knew what he did.

Resubmitting Sitemaps

When you make changes to your Sitemap, you can resubmit it using your Google Webmaster Tools account or an HTTP request.

Resubmit a Sitemap using Webmaster Tools

On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want.
Under Optimization, click Sitemaps.
Select the Sitemap(s) you want to resubmit, and then click the Resubmit Sitemap button.

What is contained in a site map?  Is it a pointer to a page or the individual content on that page.  In the case of our images, does it point to an image depository that holds all images, or a listing of individual images?

I'm wondering exactly what changes on our sites triggers the need to resubmit a site map.  If I upload 6 new images will they be included in future indexing because the current sitemap points to the image depository or do I need to resubmit because the sitemap is looking to a list of images that needs to be resubmited to show the new images.

Same for a blog post - will the site map look for the blog page and pick up individual new posts or do I need to resubmit after every post?

Back to the original theme of what's holding me back... I've been thinking about it more, and it really doesn't make a lot of sense to start a whole new site just to experiment with. It's just a waste of time to commit to something that I'm really not going to commit to. It doesn't make much sense to convert my current site to a Symbio site. It doesn't look like much of a functional upgrade from what I have. And if I was going to put in that effort, I'd probably spend money/time on a custom built site that does everything I want. That seems to be the most logical 2.0 MyStockVectors (or is it 3.0?).

The only thing I really see as missing would be the community and networking. That seems to be the real value. So, I guess my question would be, what about a Symbio plugin for us outsiders? I'm not sure how that would work, but I figured it would be worth bringing up.

I can see the sense in keeping an existing site that is working well for you.  But what is stopping you from creating a Symbiostock site that would function as just a portal to bring more views and hopefully buyers to your existing site?  You can set it up without the purchase option and just have each image link to the same image on your current site for purchases.  That would give you the advantage of the linked network while retaining your current site functionality and SEO status.

That's a decent idea. It still would be a huge undertaking to link every image. I'm not sure how I feel about creating an entire site full of links either.

It does have it's pros and cons.  Huge undertaking for sure and it does pull people away from the network once they are on your outside site, but by the same token your Symbiostock site could bring people to the network via Google searches.  The linking I've seen was more limited, not the full site, using the Symbiostock site for most images but also showing some that were exclusive to Stocksy, linking there.

Sounds like the stress levels have been greatly reduced which is good to hear.  I'm on board for a donation too if you go the free distribution route.  Having everyone on the premium version only helps to strengthen the concept.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Someone else's photos are on MY PAGE
« on: August 19, 2013, 21:39 »
The lightbox option and ability to add your own similar images was one of the few things that iStock got right and differentiated it from other sites.  Too bad they had to destroy that too.  On top of it they also buried the contributor identity too by pushing contributor info way down the page, as if they wanted everyone to become anonymous.

I also noticed that if you use the price slider the Similars selection tosses that all out the window.  Tried some searches on the lower price range and half to all Similars were in higher price points.  Tried searching on just the highest price range and about half the Similars were in the lowest price range.  Frustrating for the buyer either way if they are filtering with a specific goal in mind.

No, have u duplicated content eg descripions, titles etc?
Yes I do have. Is there a way to check what has been dropped by google. So I can fix those instead of gong through all the images

I've seen the same with de-indexed page and image count. Google does remove duplicates and I do have a couple that ended up with the same info. I found info somewhere on the Google Webmaster page that listed the duplication errors with links to the page. I'll search for that later when I'm on my laptop and post how to find that.

You can definitely lock them down and not offer for purchase.  Some images, like this one from Travelwitness, isn't for sale on the site but is shown with a link where it can be purchased exclusively through Stocksy [url]http://www.travelwitness.net/image/st-nicholas-church-amsterdam-2/?r=http://www.travelwitness.net[url].

You mentioned being familiar with Wordpress.  Symbiostock images are uploaded into their own image and processing area, separate from the standard Media area found in Wordpress themes. Those images will link to the purchase pages and show up in links.  You can also upload images via the regular Media area and use standard Wordpress functions to create pages for galleries, blog images, etc.

If all you need is a little more encouragement I'd say do it!

Welcome aboard!  You have a wonderful site.  I was particularly drawn to your stunning sunrise and sunset images - just breathtaking.  I like how you have instructions on your homepage too.  I think many of the Symbiostock customers will not be the typical stock image buyer and instructions will be helpful.   I need to add an instruction area on my site too.

Symbiostock - General / Re: Image Pricing?
« on: August 17, 2013, 22:23 »
I left my images at the default setting to begin with while I worked my way through the set up process.  My reasoning being that they are at several micro sites but also that most of them were shot with my older Canon 30D so the large size is not all that large by today's standards.  I'm shooting with a 5d MkIII now.  I may keep some of these exclusive to my site and will be more selective about which sites get them if I upload elsewhere.  I do like Crackerclips reasoning for two bands of pricing, lower end for blog and small, higher priced for medium and large.  I plan to review my pricing and most likely will bump up the pricing in the near future.
