If I understood their announcement correctly, there was an increase even for those who opted out of the dollar club. Is this correct?
Yes. But the increase is only for sales in their monthly subscription packages, not for regular subs. Until now there was no way to know where a subscription sale came from. Now, if a subs royalty is different then your usual one, you know it is via a monthly pack.
Thanks. I (sort of) understand now. They (and several other stock agencies) have financials as convoluted as cable companies.

I think I am seeing some increase, but I've never understood the royalty payment system, so I have no idea if I am. If I understood their announcement correctly, there was an increase even for those who opted out of the dollar club. Is this correct?

I bailed out earlier this year. I never had enough sales to justify the time uploading etc. My port is <1000 so maybe it was just to small.

Did you contact Shutterstock about this?

August 2013 -- my first sale with them. I never really looked at it closely before, but I can see now that most of my sales have not cleared. I'm not sure you could create a more bizarre uploading and accounting system if you threw a team of monkeys at it.

I am fairly new at this, but is it the first time I have seen enough shooters band together to produce results, instead of just bickering about it. I find this very encouraging. It is nice to see Fotolia raise some rates, but it's still unclear to me why customers would not migrate to the dollar club, or some derivative incarnation of it, which is a much better value for them. (Yes, I opted out of the dollar club). I can see there would be some short-term gain for us with the raise, but longer term it is a killer. This is strictly business to me, I have no axe to grind, and I see it as a better business decision to stay opted out. Then again, I don't earn much on Fotolia so it's not that difficult a decision for me.

In my day job we are often asked by designers or PR agencies for free images for a good cause they are working on. We always ask if they are working for free as well. That always ends the conversation -- they are being paid. Donating your work and time is a noble thing to do, but it is just that -- a donation.

I tried this with my bank. I told them if they would let me use their money for free I would tell everyone where I got the money from. Free advertising for them. They called the police.

I had a great April, but this month (May) SOD, OD, and EDs are almost non-existent. I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this?

FYI - l already hold the Canadian patent on this unique lighting technique ... so would all Canadian photographers please forward royalties directly to me pls. $100 per shoot will do. That's my bargain Amazon killer price. But wait! I will be starting a special dollar club pricing plan soon -- 10 shoots for $10! Beat that price!

I suppose his other options would have been to create another cutthroat agency that screwed over photographers. Or to stay in retirement. I fail to see how his actions can be construed as negative in any way. Perhaps the word altruistic might seem a bit heavy, but he could easily have created Stocksy as an agency much less photographer friendly and still been successful, so I'll give him the nod to use the word.

Not sure why there is bad feeling toward Bruce and Stocksy. He created an agency that deals very fairly with photographers, gives photographers a share of the company, manages growth in a prudent manner, carves out a market niche ...

I am purchasing a new Mac this week. I looked and thought hard about buying a PC -- the value is so much better, but having owned both Macs and PCs, the Macs require much less maintenance. I have virtually never had a serious problem with any of my Mac laptops and desktops in 20 years. The PCs I have owned always had problems requiring lots of attention. My wife has a Dell laptop and if a week goes by without a problem it's a miracle. The reality is, I am too busy to spend time on computer maintenance.

I have noticed over that last year I will sell an image on one of the big 4 sites and the image, or a similar, will sell within an hour or so on other sites, usually at different prices. I always thought it was coincidence (and maybe it is) but it seems to happen on a regular basis. I just sold one on SS that sold an hour ago on DT (for much more). It's not a popular photo, or frankly a very good image. I wonder if it has something to do with Google searches?
