General Stock Discussion / Re: PayPal Upgrade

It's all a bit cryptic in the way they explain it, but it's relatively simple:

When you receive an IPN, the software (in the case of Symbiostock, WooCommerce) confirms the IPN with PayPal via a secured URL. All PayPal is saying is that the security of this request is now being changed from 128 to 256.

You don't have to change your IPN url, or put that in SSL. All that is required is that the server that is going to contact PayPal to confirm the IPN knows how to communicate via the 256 standard. Most servers will be okay with this.

An easy way to test is to download and install this plugin:

https://gist.github.com/mikejolley/0941e0882efcad64ea40

It will tell you whether your server can negotiate it or not. I've tested it on a number of servers and they have all been successful.

Tried it with success.  Thanks Robin!

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Paypal
September 13, 2015, 20:47
Got the following email from Paypal regarding my Symbiostock site:

"PayPal service upgrades.

As we have previously communicated to you, PayPal is upgrading the certificate for www.paypal.com to SHA-256. This endpoint is also used by merchants using the Instant Payment Notification (IPN) product.

This upgrade is scheduled for 9/30/2015; however, we may need to change this date on short notice to you to align to the industry security standard.

You're receiving this notification because you've been identified as a merchant who has used IPN endpoints within the past year. If you have not made the necessary changes, we urge you to do so right away to avoid a disruption of your service!

Because these changes are technical in nature, we advise that you consult with your individuals responsible for your PayPal integration. They will be able to identify what, if any, changes are needed. Please share this email and the hyperlinks below with your technical contact for evaluation.

Testing in the Sandbox is one of the best ways to make sure your integration works. Sandbox endpoints have been upgraded to accept secure connections by the SHA-256 Certificates.

Full technical details can be found in our Merchant Security System Upgrade Guide. In addition, our 2015-2016 SSL Certificate Change microsite contains a schedule of our service upgrade plan.

Thanks for your patience as we continue to improve our services."

Anyone else get this?

Still running my site and happy with it.  I get a few sales a month, which is more than some of the lower tier agencies.
#6
So nice of them to split it out over 6 months.  Woo Yay!!!  The incompetence over there is mind blowing.

I really don't understand what's going on at DT this month. I had a good January however both my sales and earnings for February are projected to be almost 50% down on January. They have literally halved from one month to the next.

My RPD has also been in free-fall for about a year but especially so since September when I uploaded several hundred new files, adding about 20% to my portfolio size. This time last year my RPD was usually about $2.30-2.40. Now it is $1.06-10. It is as if I've suddenly gone back to 2007-8.

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues at DT?

Yes.  Sales this month have been virtually nonexistent.  At this pace, it will be my worst month there since Dec. '07.

Thanks for all of your hard work, Leo.  You did most of this with no compensation and I applaud you for that.  You saw a need and filled it.  Good luck in your illustrating and any other endeavors.  Thank you!

Apparently they are just changing the logo, not the site: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=356290&page=1

What's the point of the period at the end?  (no pun intended)

I actually like the new logo, but don't understand the period.  Unnecessary.

For a couple of months, I've gotten this message when trying to upload:  "You browser doesn't have Flash, Silverlight, Gears, BrowserPlus or HTML5 support."  Somebody suggested deactivating plugins until the issue was resolved.  I tried it with no success.  I've just been uploading to the uploads folder, but now that has disappeared.  The "pluload" part of "/home1/dannyhoo/public_html/hookstockimages/wp-content/plupload/uploads/" is gone.  I'm not able to upload anymore.  Any ideas?
Update to latest version then turn the theme off then on again. That action runs the installer which should update your folder.

Thanks, Leo!  Worked like a charm.

Oh yeah? I don't see any yet. And maybe 10% of my May payments so far. You think the other 190% are gonna come in this weekend? About as likely as me riding a unicorn.

Lobo types this as he's laughing uncontrollably.

Reading this thread the quote "Professionals deal with professionals" constantly pops into my mind. Wonder why... .

Yeah.  That's a classic, right along the lines of "money is not what makes you happy."

No, no, it's definitely knackered, like an old, broken-down horse off to be slaughtered at the knacker's yard.

It's a good word for iStock as a whole, actually, conjuring up, as it does, thoughts of something that was once young, virile and useful, but which has grown old and tired, and is being abused and torn apart so that the last bits of value can be scraped from its twitching carcass. (Or is that too graphic?).

Perfectly accurate, I'd say.

Here we are nearly through with Sunday and PP reporting still hasn't begun in earnest.

I am starting to get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, wondering if we are ever going to see that money without an attorney's intervention.

Hope I'm wrong and it starts showing up...

Maybe it's all going in Yuri's account.

They probably just decided they didn't want to work the weekend.  I bet the processing will start tomorrow.

It's halfway through a Canadian weekend (give or take), and I've only had one PP sale through, from 3rd.  I know I only have a small port, but I usually see more than that, especially if this weekend is May AND June.  It sounds like I'm not alone in seeing far fewer sales than expected (though do correct me if I'm wrong), which is a) reassuring, it's not just that my port has gone down the plughole, and b) concerning, what is going on with PP?

Its knackered mate.
"Knackered".  Had to use my dictionary for that one.  The Istock forum is really good for my English.  I'm learning lots of new words they don't teach you at school in Belgium   ;D
in lesser polite terms I'd say "buggered" rather than "knackered".

That may be the best description of iStock that I've ever read!

I think it has to do more with a dated system then incompetent staff. All the recent changes and ingestion may be too much for their system. For some reason when I think of their servers I see a bunch of band-aids all over it...hmm that might make for a good stock image ;)
Incompetent staff at the top who didn't know when to call for a complete rewrite.

That never happens because management will never accept the cost. It's always "just one more" patch, temporary change, bug fix, and a promise to clean it all up later.   With everything that's happened at IS lately, the site code probably looks like the plumbing under Manhattan.

This typically continues until the software people just burn out and leave, and then things get even worse because the new guys don't know the history and don't fully understand the implications of changes they're told to make.

Been there, done that.

Their unwillingness to update the system is a telling sign.  Why invest money in a company with no future?

Forget about PP payments today, quote from Lobo:

I'm telling you that they will be processed as soon as the GI payment process is complete. Which normally take a day or so to complete.

RE: GI payment process:
So will this be entirely completed this morning? Probably not.

Because they can't do more than one thing at a time.  Why is all of this not automated?  Does everything there have to be manually processed?  Truly amazing.

When trying to upload, I get the following message: "You browser doesn't have Flash, Silverlight, Gears, BrowserPlus or HTML5 support."  This is my first upload in a couple of weeks, so I don't know how long the problem has existed.  Anybody else experience this?

I saw that when i added a plugin that the upload window didnt like. Try turning off plugins one by one until the upload window comes back.

Thanks, Cathy, but I haven't added any plugins lately.

OK, no worries, don't try it then. I'm sure it's what Leo is talking about then.

I'll try it anyway.  Maybe the problem arose after one of the theme or plugin updates.  I'll try it later tonight.
