Tasty looking fish :)

I wish the green leaves didn't look quite as limp, apart from the over tight composition.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Mid-Month Heart Beat on Dreamstime
« on: March 13, 2014, 16:17 »
Compared to same month last year,

Dls −30%
RPD +41 %

So overall revenue a little higher.  But its the 13th today with the rest of the month to go - everything can change  :)

I did a quick random check by BDs list (thanks for that), and did not find my images on these sites.  Also do not find them on Shotshop any longer.  Looking at all these sites, its a bit scary how far and wide DP had managed to spread our content - its as if we had been no longer in control of our work!  And to top it all, we were probably being paid a lowly sub rate while the sales may have been made at much higher prices, according to the experience reported by those making test purchase from Shotshop.

I have accordingly started to review all partnership options on different sites.  Opted out at 123RF last week. Will look closer at other ones.  And possibly stop contributing to any sites that wont allow opt out or wont give a full disclosure about partners and sales.  I think that may finally be the way to go to be able to keep some reasonable control of the work.

Oh joy :) my DP images have disappeared from Shotshop - finally!  Don't know if they are still selling at some other 'partners' - must check this out!

Meanwhile and leading up to this event I have deactivated over a third of my portfolio at DP - trying to pick images that have tended to sell well at other sites.  Have also stopped all new uploads to DP.  I have to say that this event has undermined them in my mind and I am not prepared to take further risk. Because who knows what they might do in future.

The past, as they say, is the best predictor of the future. And at the moment I have learnt my lesson :)

A few home truths that we should probably come to grips with.

Microstock will never be a source of reasonable income (time/ effort invested to returns made) for most of us - at least I can speak for myself.

Just in the last month we have had 2 issues that go to show how the agencies view contributors.  This Getty embed deal - good or bad - contributors were neither consulted nor given opt out.  And just before that the DP - Shotshop deal that paid contributors lowly sub rates while the eventual sale was for hugely greater amounts.  And if you scan over the last year or two, almost every other agency has unilaterally decreased our commissions, to increase their share.  Furthermore many have forced us into accepting the sub model with absolutely no justification if one sees the volume generated for an individual contributor. Some agency wont let you opt out of the partner programs or give you take it all or leave it all, opt-in ultimatums.  And while all this is going on there are more and more contributors and uploads, that have now taken the larger agencies to 20 million+ images - further strengthening them to act willfully backed by large and growing reserves of images.

What does all of this tell me?  That most of us (microstock contributors) are seen by the agencies as a large photography- interest group of some sort, perhaps not too different from Flickr, and we need to get our 'kicks' because our work gets featured somewhere and rejoice if a few pennies get thrown in our direction.  Its maybe not how we see ourselves.  Its how the agencies appear to see us.

I like Shutterstock.  Sure its sub based. That is their model from the outset and one can take it or leave it.  They justify it with regular, consistent volume month over month, in most months.  But Shutterstock cant be the one answer for all of us for all time.  Anyway with time we are likely to see sales spread thinner over more and more contributors.  Simply because the market is not growing at the rate of supply to all indications.

It seems clear that we are not a cohesive group of any sort that can influence the microstock business chain in a meaningful way.

We see this again and again.

So I think its time to clean up my little microstock house - get out of all dysfuntional type agencies and deals.  Be happy with whatever microstock income I make every month from a few 'good' and carefully selected agencies.  And focus lots more positive energy into more productive avenues of photography.  Nothing else I do can get as bad as all this.  That's the point.

Meanwhile I, and I hope most other contributors, should actively STOP contributing to agencies that willfully act contrary to our interest.  That is the one thing we can do which will make a difference - and may change the writing on the wall.

btw. I've found that some of my images on DP are in sale %:

XS 299 x 401 Standard License 4.2" x 5.6" (72 dpi) JPG              1        0.8
S 611 x 819 Standard License 8.5" x 11.4" (72 dpi) JPG              2        1.6
M 1222 x 1637 Standard License 4.1" x 5.5" (300 dpi) JPG         4        3.2
L 2848 x 3816 Standard License 9.5" x 12.7" (300 dpi) JPG        8        6.4
EL 2848 x 3816 Extended License 9.5" x 12.7" (300 dpi) JPG    80      64

Is it new or I just missed?

I checked a few of my files at random and they are showing the usual prices (no discount).  So maybe this is something new and affecting some files only ..  certainly haven't been informed anything about it.

Talk about lack of communication...

107
Same here.

I guess deactivation is the only option. :)

Yes and I have already deactivated about one-third of my port from DP by this time.

108
Today is 9th March and my images are still showing on Shotshp!  DP had said that by 8th March they should be gone from their partner programs.  Obviously that's not happened in my case!!!  >:(

Dreamstime.com / Re: New design for submission page
« on: March 08, 2014, 02:57 »
Its somewhat clumsy and I cant get more than one image uploaded at a time.  Even two images would not get on after 5 or 6 attempts. Then I had to upload one by one.

110
Yes I am too!  And dont understand why it appears as a large banner right above the website.  Is this a serious request or a gimmick of some sort?  If its a serious request why haven't they sent out an email or a more descriptive communication to contributors?  ???

123RF / Re: Images not getting review
« on: March 07, 2014, 05:37 »
Agree! My 123RF review times seemed to have increased significantly in recent months.  Wonder what's going on there..

112
Hmm..

http://m.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-26463886

And quoting from the article:

"Getty will get its pound of flesh one way or another," (sic)

And again:

"My Twitter feed has exploded with very angry photographers going 'I don't want Getty giving away my images for free'," she said. (sic)

"For some of them, it might mean their images are never used commercially and they'll never make a penny. (sic)

113
Deactivated couple hundred more images from DP yesterday .. then my finger got tired :)

114

1. Would anyone (buyers or contributors) use it as decision making criteria?
2. Would the agencies consider the postings (feedback, experience, etc) vital enough to listen and react?

I would also think that there should be a buyer section where they can post their experiences around service levels, pricing, etc.

Yes they would.  A purchase is an emotional decision - and the overall impression that we hold about a company always plays a significant role.
And yes they would. Because they could ignore it only at their own peril once there is enough circulation or readership of content.

Yes absolutely. A buyer section can even be in the same string as contributor section in my opinion.  Its simply anyone or public at large, that can post or respond there.  And the company itself would also have the opportunity to comment or respond - just as they can do on TripAdvisor.

115
On the contrary, perhaps its time for SS to increase prices at least to keep up with inflation ...

116
I don't know how many of you use TripAdvisor, but it seems like we want a type of TripAdvisor site for stock agencies (and possibly other businesses too). That isn't as easy as one might like - fighting off fake entries for example - but it's a great way for people to see what hotels/restaurants stock agencies/services are like.

You can sort things by date so that old/bad behavior can be over time ameliorated by improvements, but history is never erased (unlike the BBB and Angie's List)

I regularly use TripAdvisor and find it an excellent source of information for travel planning. And this is a brilliant idea particularly as it could serve the public at large, contributors and buyers alike.

Consumers or buyers are frequently as concerned about the ethical standards of a business, as much as we as contributors are, when we find ourselves exposed to malicious or unfair trade practices.

A public forum can therefore help to keep the whole supply chain 'cleaner' by forcing everyone to be more actively concerned about their total business image.

117
Today I got a personal message. It seems that what I wrote about a quality label for agencies can be misunderstood, so Ill try to explain a bit:

What I meant with quality label was a list with basic information about every specific agency and info added about problems contributors had with them.
No personal opinions, only facts.

I think its a great idea.  Over time we would get a historical build up with factual info on the agencies, that would help microstockers new and old.  Realtime factual data is information and information is everything!  As long as we can keep emotions out of it and keep to facts, it would serve all contributors and even agencies (or some of them).

General Stock Discussion / Re: February Sales
« on: March 01, 2014, 09:49 »
Ok month, positive to Feb 2013.

SS highest as usual but flat to last year (tiny increase over Feb 13).
DT up >20%
PD nicely up, also boosted by referral revenue.
FT average/ ok.
123RF flat to last year, improved RPD but fewer downloads.
Canstock about double last year though still among my lower earners.
Bigstock boosted by one higher priced EL turned in a better month.
iStock, well under last year but have reduced content there due deactivation.
GL nothing.
Alamy one solitary sale after few months of nothing.
Veer - dont even look at it anymore, dls are very few and sub type rates.
Deposit bunch of mostly low-rated subs and sub PLAN (whatever that is) sales.
FAA nothing. Have opted not to pay the membership plan this year due to no sales.

Have stopped uploading or making much fewer uploads to some sites (Veer, GL, Alamy) due to low sales performance. Bigstock due to dismal Sub rate, undercutting SS (am not on the bridge for whatever reasons). Have started deactivating and stopped all new uploads to Depositphotos due their biz practices/ Shotshop issue. Otherwise its business as usual and trying to add new content as best I can to my positive performing sites  :)

Pond5 / Re: Review time for photos?
« on: February 28, 2014, 16:32 »
I will write and ask them.  Actually some of the batches I sent in were reviewed very quickly, within a day or two .. and then a batch got stuck in 'pending review' and is still standing there. Maybe something's wrong!

My last batch is 'pending review' for a pretty long time, some weeks I think.  Don't know if l-o-n-g review times are the norm at Pond5.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Which Microstock?
« on: February 28, 2014, 10:16 »
Stock photography usually comes with a big learning curve.  Style, theme, sharpness, lighting and subject matter are all part of it.  If you've done your research well you would have seen what sells on some of the sites (if not try, Bestsellers), as it will give you an idea, as a general reference.  Not to imitate but to invoke your creativity in the right direction.

Then I would say, go for Shutterstock and Dreamstime to begin your microstock journey.  Once you've got in to both these, you should have your bar raised to the right spot for all other microstock. Then look around for other sites that may suit your work.  Microstock is tough to make money from these days - you need lots of patience and tons of content, so be ready for that!

Try to know which agencies to avoid too! For instance, I for one wish I had never signed up with Depositphotos - which I unfortunately did against my instinct and better judgement and am regretting it ever since their Shotshop dealings came out in the open..

122
Over one month?

No, but my last email from DP received last week said..
"Your portfolio will be removed from our partner programs and API re-seller sites shortly."

For me shortly does not mean one month.

Just now I got another email that reads (extract):
"Deleting you from the Partner program is a difficult technical process. Thus, unfortunately, it cant be achieved momentarily. Our technical department is already working on it. We are planning to complete the process by March 8th."

So I guess I must wait till 8th March!

123
Still find my DP images selling on Shotshop this morning ...  >:(

124
The well planned shots are usually Good - the afterthought ones are sometimes Brilliant!

Panthermedia.net / Re: What about Panthermedia?
« on: February 26, 2014, 05:24 »
Hi Robert, ok thanks very much.  I shall go through the contributor terms and agreement and may contact shortly as I have >2000 images.

Regarding the optional rights, will need to read through the terms esp. regarding sub rates and partner programs.  There have been issues with partners/ API resellers involving another agency (not yours) but it just makes one cautious - and in future I want to be very clear of the terms before signing to these.
