General Stock Discussion / Re: Two Major Milestones in One Day« on: October 24, 2006, 06:57 »Congratulations. You are way ahead of me at iSotck but just behind at fotolia. Thanks you very much. Fotolia doesn't seem to do as well for me for some reason. What is your all time rank at fotolia. When I made the Bronze canister, my rank was 1000 and I have slipped slightly since (mental note: must upload more - mantra quality and quantity). My all-time rank is currently 1226, but it seems to move up and down from day-to-day and week-to-week. 1028
General Stock Discussion / Two Major Milestones in One Day« on: October 24, 2006, 06:14 »
Yesterday, I had two major milestones on the micrstock sites:
- I went over the 500 sales mark at iStock and earned my 1st new canister (a bronze one). This doesn't get me much, since it only increases the # of uploads per week and I only upload a few photos a week, but it is a good moral boost. - I went over the 100 sales mark at Fotolia and earned my 1st new ranking (a bronze one). This one will hopefully get me a little more, since it increases royalties from 33% to 35% and allows one to increase their Extended licenses. All in all, it was a very good day. 1029

StockXpert.com / Re: 'Free for you' feature« on: October 20, 2006, 13:17 »
I also agree that it is a nice feature and believe that ALL of the sites should implement something similar. It is nice to be able to download an image when it is not readily available.
I just wanted to make sure that people weren't going to use that as their ONLY backup. 1033
iStockPhoto.com / iStock Adds New Features« on: October 20, 2006, 05:53 »
Disambiguating files is now a LOT easier. iStock has added:
- a new tab that allows a user to copy tags (aka keywords) from one file to another - a new way to remove multiple tabs at one time They have also made the display for alternate searches more visible. If you search on keywords that are disambiguated to a phrase, there is a new box at the top of the search results that says something similar to: We found the term "living room" as a phrase. Would you like to search for living AND room instead? 1034
StockXpert.com / Re: 'Free for you' feature« on: October 20, 2006, 04:43 »
If you are relying on a stock site as a backup, then there is something amiss. A backup procedure/plan should be a part of every computer that has information on it that is irreplaceable. If your photos are valuable, then set up a backup plan. If you don't, I guarantee that you will regret it...

Microstock News / Re: Microstock News Poll - keep it / trash it/ in between« on: October 18, 2006, 05:00 »
I also like a thread for each new item, since I never scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. As was stated earlier, it will quickly fall to the bottom if nobody makes a comment.
The problem with iStock news is that most of the REALLY important stuff is buried on page 23 of a thread somewhere never to be found (unless some kind soul that has read all 50 pages decides to kindly post it). 1036

If so, how much is it? 1038
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock -- organizing keywords and phrases?« on: October 16, 2006, 06:24 »I don't think it is just ebb and flow. The more phrases you put in the system, the more rewards you get. example phrase (silly boy): lets say that before you added the phrase 'silly boy' if a buyer were to search "silly boy" the search engine would search for "silly AND boy". But now that you've added the phrase to their system, when anyone searchs for "silly boy" the system will only return the photos that have that exact phrase. It is normally a much smaller return. This is not true. Although there are times that the search engine will return the phrase, there are other times that the search engine will NOT return the phrase, so it is a crap shoot. For example, if you search using the keywords"American passport" (WITHOUT the quotes), then the search results show for "american AND passport" and you will receive 23 results. If you search using the keywords "American passport" (WITH the quotes), then you will receive the phrase "American passport" and you will receive 1 result. The same is true of the famous example "red car" and many other keyword combinations. But other examples, such as searching for the keywords "American flag" (WITHOUT the quotes) will show up as you stated (with results from the phrase). So there is no rhyme or reason to the searches at this point. On top of that, the search results keep changing as the days go by. One day, the keywords will return the phrase and on another day they will return the separate keywords... 1039

iStockPhoto.com / Does Anything Change When You Reach the Second (Bronze) Canister?« on: October 13, 2006, 17:06 »
After reading another thread, I see that achieving the bronze canister level (over 500 DLs) gets an increase in uploads (from 20 to 25/week), but I was wondering if there are any other benefits (as a non-exclusive)?

I combined the following two pages:
http://www1.istockphoto.com/xnet.php http://www1.istockphoto.com/icons.php To come up with this: In order to bring down the queue, we have temporarily lowered the upload limits. Please be your own editor and upload wisely. Default: 20 Bronze (500+ DLs): 25 Silver (2,500+ DLs): 30 Gold (10,000+ DLs): 35 Diamond (25,000+ DLs): 50 Exclusive limits remain unchanged. There is also a Black Diamond icon/level, but I'm not sure what the upload limits for that are. I'm not going to research the issue, since I probably will never reach it... 1043

I don't do many model releases and haven't done any on SS, but SS has implemented a MR library where you can upload one release and then use it on multiple photos.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Strange Sales Rates« on: October 10, 2006, 10:34 »2. Your images have been up there for a long time and thus used to show up in the Most Popular searches (which used to really be based on Most Downloads). Since the search changed in the past month, your images are no longer showing up in Most Popular (since it has changed to a sort based upon time AND downloads). There was an announcement made, and then there were a myriad of forum threads on the topic. Here is one of the first threads on the issue (from back in July): http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11161&highlight=popular |
