Veer / Re: Veer Dash for Cash
« on: May 19, 2010, 14:34 »
Is it just me... or is the dash for cash more like a crawl? reviews just do not seem to be happening at any kind of pace?

i've just had my 1st 71 reviewed, 44 approved. a lot of property release rejections.

pb,

after a sale like that (sorry, i'm drooling), don't you feel you should concentrate your work in rm and not bother with microstock anymore? obviously this experiment has failed for you rm guys.

Veer / Re: Statue Quo!!
« on: May 18, 2010, 15:28 »
Oh well, I thought you guys were educated?

Status quo,  not statue quo.  A statue is a piece of rock shaped into something at a park.  A statue quo would be a replica, I think.

that's a very educated reply, mantonino.  :)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Fresh exclusive feedback
« on: May 18, 2010, 15:27 »
Before I went exclusive, my daily average sales was a little over $5 per day across all 13 agencies I contributed to.  Since going exclusive, my daily average sales has increased just about 50%, and so far in May, it's been almost 100%.

so, in effect, is has replaced all 13 agencies with 100% growth (in may), increasing from $5 to $10/day? well done!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Thinkstock image on CNN
« on: May 18, 2010, 13:50 »

Building your name(brand) means getting more traffic on your portfolio, more sales, more job. I was not talking about that celebrity life.

I agree^^.   However I do think that some microstockers have been quite successful at building a brand.  Yuri Arcurs, Lise Gagne, Sean Locke, Andres Rodrigues, Iophoto, Monkeybusiness etc. spring to mind.

(ETA:  Apologies for misspelling any names in the above list^^)

...and now, lisafx.  :)

that's great! is this a better or worse ratio than normal?

I don't know if I'm going a bit loopy, but I'm a bit confused...... :)

I deleted my account at StockXpert when it closed down, however, ever since I commenced uploading to IS, I've always clicked the partner program box.  Does that mean that my images are now also on Thinkstock?  If it does, where can I view my Thinkstock sales?

The weirdest thing has been happening lately.

I use the Picniche toolbar.

Out of the blue, a number of small sales come in......sometimes one after the other...adding up to 10 or 20 dollars.  This happened yesterday afternoon, again.

When I clicked on the IS icon in the Picniche toolbar, there was no record of any sales yesterday.  There are still no sales listed that correspond to the mass of sales that appeared yesterday.

Would these sales be Thinkstock sales?

Does this happen to anyone else who uses the Picniche toolbar?

i thought i was going a little loopy yesterday too. my is balance kept increasing but there were no associated dl. so, i believe these are you ts dl. you can find them if you click on the partner program tab. there should be a number by the pic with these dl. you can also check stats for march to see how many dl there as well.

well, that's no longer annoying, but a hateful practice.  :)

i have to agree with stochostic here. most sites don't really bother me that much, for what i get in return more than justify it.

however, at is it's a combination of different things that makes it an unpleasant process to submit your work. submitting your images one by one is truly time consuming and you have to be so careful about your keywords. i feel like i have to reduce my brain power to it's lowest common denominator (if love can't be associated with a heart shaped thing, then what is? this was Perry's complaint.) due to their weekly quotas, it's really important to have a high acceptance rate. so it's doubly frustrating if they're being declined. then the resubmit process is also annoying. if it's not one thing then it's another and you've wasted your quota. their review period is sooooooooo long. all of this for 15 uploads a week.

their requirements for an el license is much more lax, so making it less likely to have el sales (compared to ss for example, 500,000 vs. 250,000 for print or circulation requirement).  it's insulting that independents are getting so much less commission. the list goes on. it's not hate, it's just annoying (if someone asks).

Slightly off topic  but is there enough of a interest to make money at micro rates on editorial images? Generally editorial is a smaller.

i don't get massive # of dl on my micro rf images in any case, so i don't know if my #s will be helpful to you. however, at ss, my editorial dl is about 20% of total, whilst making up 35% of the port. also, 30% of od are editorial and had one el. dt is insignificant but i haven't uploaded much to them.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Is Dreamstime dying?
« on: May 17, 2010, 14:44 »
for me, DT came out of a coma two months ago, and is actually uttering a few words this month. long term prognosis, doctor?

163
i think alamy may be the best market for your archival editorial work. one plus about 123 is that they are not restricting their editorials to just news events, but to also include street scenes, which is a bit more creative.

164
There seems to be little to no urgency in reviewing editorial.  I'm wondering just how serious 123rf is in branching into the editorial arena?  Priority seems to be on giving away iPods.   ;)

seems like they have their priorities straight, i'm getting mine this week (not from 123).

if sales are anything to go by, since 123 is already lagging dt, which is lagging ss (both editorial sellers), i don't expect much from 123's editorial sales. but one never knows.

Adobe Stock / Re: Annoyed
« on: May 16, 2010, 13:37 »
Shutterstock took all of them within a couple days and I had a few sales of of them withing a few days.

Same set at Fotolia took about 8 days to review.  ALL were rejected?@#$%$#@  Most due to poor quality?

i think this has to do more with subject matter and style rather than the quality of the pictures. my acceptance at ft has risen from 30 to almost 100% once i hit some subjects that they liked, but which were rejected by other places like ss. in fact, i have some photos rejected everywhere except at ft.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Questions
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:35 »
Again!

Does Alamy accept universal model release?

Thanks!

i believe so. they went through with no problems.

Also ap is currently ignored. Reasons: Pointless comments and cause turmoil.

i'm not sure what i said to turmoil you, but i shall wear your ignore button proudly as my first (probably not last) battle scar on the field of the msg forum.  :)

Yes, but 0 sales is too bad.  Even on a Friday or Saturday.

well, i did get 2 dl today.  ::)

169
Ouch!  I shouldn't have checked my account today.   Last two days with 0 sales  :'(

Hope the next two weeks get better.

friday and saturdays are the worst days of the week.

You might feel you should have taken the credit, ap, but I believe you made the right decision. When people find out those calendar images were given away, you will have a whole host of impressive companies wanting to work with you...for free. It's easy to negotiate down with a company if you ask too much money, but once you work for free it's pretty difficult to go up from there.

now i feel a little better...at least i have a good story to tell, when i'm a seasoned photog, as to who i said 'no' to.

For several years I've done occasional photography for a local fitness magazine.  I had to set up appointments with people they were featuring and travel around to shoot at various locations.  Then there was processing time, etc.

Their fee was just $25.  So low it almost never covered my expenses and certainly didn't produce any kind of profit but I was new and wanted the exposure and by-line.  Plus I thought eventually as my skill increased they'd pay me more.

Here it is three years later and they are asking me to travel long distances and take hours out of my day for the same $25 fee.  I told them I wasn't going to shoot photographs for a fee that didn't even cover my expenses anymore.  I thought since they've come to rely on me and I've done a great job for them that they'd pony up some more cash.   Of course they didn't.  I guess they think they can find another beginner who'll work essentially for free.

for something like this, i would do an exchange for both property and model release to make it worth your while, in addition to the meagre $25 'processing' fee. this is truly an insult to photographers since this is assignment work and you can't add these photos to your portfolio.

172
can't tell which one are yours, jonathan. but they're very nice.

173
The first week of this month was pretty bad across the board except SS (about normal), IS was way down for the first week but has picked up the pace for the second week for the most part,

+1

i think the best match shift at is has hit everyone. did anyone benefit from it, other than joingate?
otherwise, on track for a good month, with % increase on last month. (wasn't here last year, this month)

174
If you have too many bad images the buyers won't bother to go through your portfolio but if every image is good they will probably spend a lot more time browsing and then buying.

it sounds like you get multiple dl at a time, reflecting a single buyer. is that the case? i only get that at ss, but nowhere else.

175
my port hit about 150 images at is and more or less (images) at 3-4 other agencies before i stopped having 0 dl days. at 50 images, i was still having 2-3 zero dl days/month. it's funny how i'm keeping track of all this info.  :D

in return, can anyone tell me how many photos did you have at alamy before you had your first dl?
