General Stock Discussion / Re: Secure Login
« on: May 11, 2008, 08:17 »
Glad to know that at least 1 site is full secure...

Speaking of security, do you guys change your passwords regularly?

I try to do so but maybe not as frequently as I should...

And Keith (from Zimm.) There's seems to be a glitch with your system when I try to change my PW.  In Account|Profile, I change Pw and then Update but I still have to use my old pw...  What am I missing?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock to start Subscription packages.
« on: April 21, 2008, 20:02 »

The reason I can be worse off with subscriptions than the current plan is that we don't often make the minimums guaranteed by the subscription plan - it's generally quite a bit more.

I agree on that.

But the real unknown is how many more subscribers will this attract?  How many more dl will we get with this?

Remember that any subscriber switching from another site which gives us .25 or .30$ will bring us more money.  A medium size  dl will bring us a minimum of 5x0.19 = 0.95$.

If that buyer comes from SS, that's 0.60$ more...

I guess time will tell...

I will do my best to be in, but I might be a little tight for 22h GMT, which is 6PM in Montreal.  But 90% sure to be there.

By the way, I didn't check but I guess Kiva accept Paypal?

I think it has to do also with the way the photo may be used.

For exemple, if  the main subject of a photo is someone eating fast food and it is used to illustrate something bad about fastfood, of course every logo must be removed from the food wrapping etc.

But if in the background you have a bright sign of Coca-Cola on a building, I'm not sure that Coke will appreciate...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: What is the best lens?
« on: April 08, 2008, 20:33 »
I tried the 2.8 IS but I found it too heavy.  The f4 is almost half the weight of the f2.8.  And believe me, when you carry it with all your stuff for a long walk, you will appreciate the light weight of the f4.  So I just bought last week the f4 IS and I really appreciate it.  Photo quality really impress me, but I have to use it a little more to really evaluate it.

I red many places that the image quality of the f4 is better than the f2.8.  Can't tell...

(and since Canon Canada has a rebate that doubles if tou buy a second lens, I also bought this afternoon the 100mm f2.8 macro.)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Subscriptions at IStock...
« on: April 03, 2008, 18:43 »
This is from the thread on iStock and from an admin (underlined by me):

You will not be able to opt out certain sizes, but unlike other sites, we are giving out credits per day, NOT images per day, so if they buy larger images they use more credits (i.e. different sized images are not the same price under our plan).

It's the only way we could let them buy any type of files. It's totally unique in the industry. We'll be the only place one subscription will buy you video, vectors or photos.

We are not ready to discuss royalties & pricing quite yet, but I think you're going to be happy; you're not going to want to opt out. Seriously.

So let's wait and see...

Subscription will be credit based, so subscribers will still pay more for larger files!!

I'm not so sure about that, what I understand (but I hope I'm wrong) is that the amount we will receive depends on how many photos the buyer will download on a given day...

(I don't get it!  ???  ???  ??? )

Somewhat different model than the other sub sites.
The subs are for credits per day and not images per day.

I think this just might work to everyones advantage.

Well I can't see the difference...

What they didn't say yet is if there will be a different price (or credit) for different size.  Hope so!

And for the first time, some of the comments on their forum are not all Yay and Yahoo! :D

I guess we have to wait but I cannot say I'm very happy with this idea.

New Sites - General / Re: Pixburger, new in europe
« on: March 22, 2008, 14:53 »
Just uploaded 15 photos; seems that you can describe your photo in english only and their search engine will find your photos.

But you still have to categorize in French...

Anyway, I'm there and we'll see...

Did too!

I'll let you know about english or french keywording.

They say in their TOS that their search engine understands your own language (if taken in charge by Pixburger) and english; they even recommend that you use english and your own language.

I'll try english only and for some photos I'll translate keywords, caption and title in french for some others... we'll see

« on: March 16, 2008, 20:05 »

The K20D is only 3 frame per second, what is not really enough to shoot sport or wildlife in all condition. The D200 was 5fps the D300 is 6fps up to 8fps whit the big battery at a thousand dollars :(. The 40D is 5fps if I remember correctly.

Canon 40D burst rate is 6.5 fps for up to 17 raw or 75 jpegs  ;)

Beside that, in my opinion, this is a valid reason to cancel a contract.
And I never said it wasn't...

No and that's not what I meant, I was refferring to other threads here about sites that close accounts for any reasons.

It happened to me twice already at 123RF, the customer changed his mind and canceled  the download >:(
And I'm sure that the customer 'uploaded' back the photo for a refund...
