If I can't shoot the image isolated I use the pen tool.  TIP ... if you isolate an image using the pen tool, make a clipping path from the selection and save that.  That way you can use the cutout for whatever composite you are after and you can upload a JPEG with the clipping path for buyers to use.  No point in wasting the time it took to make the selection for just one use.  And you never know when you may wish to use the cutout image in the future.  Example, the CANVA use of PNG images.  I had a hundred or more images with clipping paths.  Took only seconds to make isolated PNG's out of them and upload.  All seem to be selling quite well at the moment.  A continued return on my original time investment.

Yeah, there are instances when I've saved the clipping path. Most of the time I'm just isolating vehicles or people for advertisements. So if I need to use it again I just grab the tiff and drop it in.

There are only two kinds of people opted into DFC

1/ Contributors who don't know about it, who would opt out if they did know

2/ Complete muppets

That is an insult to Muppets.

lol! My original argument that they were selling my .eps for that insanely low price. Realistically I'm starting to hate microstock but, it's kind of become a habit. Like, I wake up and look at what's sold, what has been accepted, other peoples new files, popular and stuff ... and then I try to figure out if I should create something. At this point the blog makes more with much less effort so ... I'm not even sure how bad DPC is with the state of things. That's a very pessimistic outlook I know but, I really think microstock is ... dead ... guess for us little guys anyway.

Are you going to opt in to DPC?

Is there any choice?

At the time we discovered their unfair practice by automatically including our ports in DPC they added an opt out. I don't know if that's still in place today, though.  The last I read here recently was that they would somehow sweeten your sales on FT if you opted in to DPC.

Guessing old contributors still have a choice, they might just be trapping the new guys.

You're sure you're looking at the right place?
The 365 days are for their referral program (what they call affiliation), i.e. you get payment for referred buyers for a year after you referred them.

To opt out of DPC look under "contributor parameters" in your profile, there you should find the possibility to opt out.

Oh thanks! I was looking in the wrong spot ...

Doesn't look like I have a choice for a year (it doesn't give an option just says 365 days) but, I got rejected again from SS ... was hoping to start making microstock pay a bit this year. Going to be a desperate winter at this rate ;)

Been reading around the forums and it seems like they've been doing fairly well and are still above dreamstime. Since the boycott, microstock has been so boring ... at least those little sub sales kept me checking ;) Seems like every site has their own dumb little subscription model going ... might as well just accept the fact that we're just going to live on nickels and dimes.

When dropping them in do you still get this error?

Edit: Guess not ... usually it auto-detects and marks them as illustration/clip-art

Wonder if I'm being impatient, I keep grabbing all ten and tossing them in all at once ... maybe I should just do the two files at once ... and wait for it to finish?

I use the browser upload and something goes wrong

What exactly goes wrong? I use browser upload in Chrome too, I didnt have any problems so far. If I want to upload a vector, then I select the eps file and the jpg preview and I drag both files at once to the upload area. The files must have the same name, for example "flower.eps" and "flower.jpg". What happens when you do that, is there some error message?

my last set of rejections were for not being vector files :/

Did you submit vectors in format EPS8 or EPS10? Where did you create them, in Adobe Illustrator, Corel or Inkscape?

Can't try it right now, usually it says that that filetype isn't supported I think. Yes EPS10 using AI and I'll either be missing the preview or the vector. Sometimes the previews don't even load if they do upload so I can't tell which file is missing and end up starting over. It's so confusing.

Are you making sure that when your editing after upload that you select yes in the drop down box for is this an illustration?
yup

Or submit properly ... I use the browser upload and something goes wrong ... so I ftp and upload and ... work around the missing files crap ... but, my last set of rejections were for not being vector files :/ Totally puzzled on how I'm supposed to do this, and I've gotten to the point where I just try and if not I give up for a few weeks, or months ...

I'm not a big contributor ... I maybe create a couple files per month, and I don't care if I'm rejected because my illustration sucks or whatever but, I really don't know how to get past these naive rejections for files that I've probably tried to upload a dozen times before you even see them! UGH!

(using filezilla and chrome, if anyone has any suggestions it'd be grand)

463
My portfolio isn't very big, somewhere around 100 vectors but, their upload process seems like it'd be more work than it might be worth ... Anyone having a fair amount of luck with them?

also another note- my spouse is wealthy thus tells me not to worry about making $$ thus not sure if that would be passive mode in my case- anyway no real pressure on me to produce big bucks...

so the real solution seems to be to find out if your spouse has unmarried siblings,,,

Or if he or she is willing to support a few more photographers.

Now I think we're on track!

I understand you Paul ;-)

As I said in some other post, the stock business continues to be attractive at the begining ... when we aim to earn $100, then $500 ... or even $1000. After that, and at this time, most of us will face the true and learn that is very hard to make more money.

I think most of the contributors who have earn more (many more) than $1000 are facing a decline in earnings in the last years. And will be rare the new ones that will reach what we earn in the good old years of stock.

The stock photo business in microstock is not dead, but is not profit anymore.

Of course there's profit in it.

That's the whole reason I commented on this thread in the first place. If you're a photographer, you have equipment, you have lenses you have flashes, reflectors, lights and all of that other crap. I mean, I wouldn't recommend "microstock" as a profession ... Apparently a few years ago it could have been.

But, now? If you're a photographer you've already got the shots post them and just continue to take pictures or whatever it is that you do. There's no time for speculation. Your roi could be small but, it does add up over time. Go flip hamburgers ;)

lol. This has gotten out of hand a bit again. (lol. typical MSG)

I understand what Epsilonth is saying though, as illustration is mostly a hobby for me I post an image today, maybe two ... and then wait, sometimes wait a few days, sometimes wait a month, sometimes quarters come in and sometimes quarters don't. For me it's gotten more consistent over a long term but, I might be crazy. I wouldn't advise anyone to jump in to microstock right now assuming that they can make a full-time income but, if you take it for what it is ... it works ... kinda.

I try to not sit and pull my hair out over worrying about when or if the quarters come in. It'd be nice to get some payouts before Christmas but, if not."Meh."

If it were paying for something that led to sales, $120 a year wouldn't be an issue. But that wasn't the request

The request was for money for new (and different) software - not for fixes to what we already had. There was no way to tie the expenditure to even one additional sale

As far as sales, I have made about $115 since last September with no signs that things are ramping up

I'd pay for marketing; I'd pay for fixes and improvements to what I have (which I worked very hard on); I have already paid for the premium plugin, CleanTheme and SYxtra

It's just not true or fair to say that the community screamed in outrage over a proposed fee. There was no discussion allowed and after 11 votes - 11 out of 180 sites - Leo closed up and shut things down

This isn't the first time there has been a blow up. Each one has made it harder for people to have confidence in the longer term prospects. I expect that factored in to site owners' thinking too

It should be noted that Sean Locke has a much viewed blog and a well known brand name. His sales do not surprise me but most of us are not in that situation

Bottom line is that yet another new software direction with no marketing didn't look like a good bet to me. The $120 didn't help but it wasn't the main sticking point (for me)

I messaged Leo about the proposed fee, and told him that I'd definitely be willing to pay that ... if I were making that. It's quite unfair to judge everyone on an even $120 a year fee, sure 20% or so I'd be willing to send the (usually $0) checks ...

Anyhow, the community is definitely in for a turn but, don't give up. Please.

The collective isn't dead just moving. I have a new domain and Leo is going to transfer it for me. Ill keep you all in the loop. Hopefully it will be up and kicking in about a week. Thanks for your patience.

I was thinking I could put together a couple of sites, an ad (and hopefully donation) sponsored community site, and the image browse/search site. I'd need some help retrieving data from the symbio network and stuff but, I have unlimited hosting and domains are relatively cheap ... If I could break even on keeping the symbio community afloat, I'd break my back doing it.

AMD is quite bad for PS/LR, when compared to Intel (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4770K-vs-AMD-FX-8150)

I stood by AMD for quite a long time until they merged with ATI. I'm not sure how their processors have been lately. The prices on those 8 core processors certainly look more appealing than the Intel prices.

471
$1000 for all that? Specs report please.

I'm primarily a Mac user but less than a year ago I built a PC with specs significantly inferior to yours, and was at $1200 (not counting the monitor).

Windows 7 Professional
4-core i7 3.4 Ghz (4770K)
16GB RAM @ 1833 Mhz
120 GB SSD (only 1 of them)
3 TB HDD (only one of them)
2 GB video card (GTX 660 w/ 960 cuda cores)

Granted, I paid for a new case, power supply and motherboard as well ($350 additional), but still, that would have been $850. . . your specs sound a too high-end for a $1k build, even with only the 6 comparable items listed. If I matched your specs, even with the case, PS, MOB, etc., I'd have been looking at around $1700+ instead of $1200 because 4GB is a serious video card. Oh, and 8 core processing isn't cheap either. Your claim of these specs for $1k sounds like an exaggeration. I don't believe it's possible to buy these parts new from retail or online sources for $1k. Did you buy used?

How is it possible you got all you mention for a grand?

And this is one of my points. What's on the monitor, by way of the Windows working environment, are some of the "uglies" I refer to.

I'm concerned with getting the job done and getting the most bang for my buck. I have 8-core 3.6GHz, 32GB RAM, 2 240GB SSD, 2 2TB HDD, 4GB video card for around $1,000 Windows 7 Ultimate. No way that I could afford a Mac with those specs.

Having worked on Macs in the past, I don't find the GUI to be any more attractive, but that's just me. To each his own.

That i7 was half of the cost of your computer ;) I'm assuming he went with an AMD chip.

Hi guys, thinking of running lightroom on a bigger screen than my laptop. so i wonder what you guys recommend?

i saw imac as $1299, i would like to know for PC equivalent do i get a better deal? is imac display good for photo editing? if getting a pc, what kind of display screen i should look for? thanks.

21.5-inch: 2.7GHz
Specifications
2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
8GB (two 4GB) memory
1TB hard drive1
Intel Iris Pro graphics
$1,299.00

+1 on the custom machine. Since apple went to Intel you can build a similar or even better machine at the same cost. The parts are mostly plug and play, and you can get more memory.

My i5 is still kicking butt after 4 years of heavy use. That's a huge cost savings compared to the i7. I'd focus on more ram, oh ... Get a solid state drive for sure. Even a small one to run your OS and programs on. Save files on a secondary drive. Also, adjusting large files will stress your video card. Just get the best you can afford really.

I really don't think the "Turbo Boost" has much of a benefit. Honestly, in my experience overclocking a processor can provide a short term performance boost but, after heavy use the cpu will get warm and begin to throttle down.

Also, I'd suggest Win7 a million times over Win8. The performance advantages are enough alone. Let alone Win8 makes you feel like you're working from a phone.

I contacted the European Commission about this situation of selling our content on anther site without informing us and this is the reply I got:-

Thank you for your message.

According to the EU legislation (Directive 2001/29/EC), the Member States should provide the authors, in respect of the original of their works or of copies, the exclusive right to authorise or prohibit any form of distribution to the public by sale or otherwise (art. 4 of the Directive). This right is exhausted once the author gives the consent for the sale or other form of transfer of the ownership in the EU.

In my opinion reading the above Mr Tsheltzoff and his Fotolia company have done is illegal, he should have asked us if we would like our content sold on anther site and the Terms and Conditions of that site before he went ahead and put our content on Dollar Photo Club - There should have been an OPT IN BUTTON.

I think he has become aware of this and that is the reason why he has put an OPT OUT BUTTON on Fotolia.

He still has not directly contacted any of the European Contributers with any information about DPC and whether we would like our content on this site, this is breaking the law in the EEC.

He and Fotolia are in clear breach of European Copy Write Law.

Even one sale on this DPC from a European Union citizen should have financial ramifications for Fotolia, it's not just about the money but the principle of stealing our work to sell somewhere else.

How to proceed forward with this I am unsure?

To be quite honest it's hard to say if it were "illegal" or not. I don't remember what is in the terms when I signed up (even if I did read them) as I'm sure most of you don't either. It's still poor business practice not to keep contributors informed.

I'm envious of Jo Ann and her efforts on this. I never even got a reply back from Robert of picworkflow and besides blogging and sharing . out of it on social media, that's been the extent of my effort.
