iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istockphoto in now cost uneffective for me
« on: September 28, 2006, 11:46 »
Frustration continues...

Finally my batch of 20 got reviewed after a long wait, the same batch as been accepted 100% by SS, StockXpert,Bigstock, 1 rejection from FT and DT each, I got 13 rejections out of IS. ( I even got a nice email from the reviewer at BigStock, " nice work, saves my eyes tonight, thank you" )

The funny thing some photos were rejected for not good enough model release ( the whole batch using the same model release)

Another is on camera flash is not accepted, well I did not use onboard flash, I have flash mounted on a tripod 5 feet away from camera just to add a tinkle to the eye, cannot tell flash is used.

Another one is over filtering or cannot find a focal point, ( those are for model portrait, try to make it a little soft ) yet it is perfectly focused.

The worst one is in camera settings! I shoot raw and convert to Tiff, then go through Neat Image, then save to Jpeg 12, I don't see how the setting has been affecting quality.

However most of the accepted one got rated 5 out of 5 star, though they were shot at the same time at the same place using the similar settings.

Not only IS is distance 4th, after SS, DT and FT, but more pain to deal with them, besides it's so hard to build the portfolio with them, anyway I am dissappointed.

Off Topic / Raw Workflow
« on: September 27, 2006, 16:23 »
I have been using Nikon Capture to do my raw workflow for a few years, and it's been pretty smooth.

Now I just upgraded from D100 to D80, I have to use a new workflow, at this time, I am not sure which one will give me the best workflow in terms of efficiency and quality, I am considering those:

Nikon Capture NX,
Adobe Lightroom Beta ( wonder what the final cost will be next year, but sounds like an exciting product )

Anyone has some experience with those two?

Off Topic / FTP Upload Issues
« on: September 24, 2006, 18:14 »
Hi, I have been using SmartFTP to upload to several site at the same time, today, I tried to upload a batch of 20 files to 6 sites, but for some reason, most of them all quit uploading after one file, I tried to upload to one site at a time, still the uploading process stopped after one upload, sometimes even the one did not complete, can anyone help me with thiis, thanks.

I have sometimes uploaded 50 or more at a time, never experienced similar problem, maybe because I just recently installed the Yahoo widget, does that interfere with my uploading?

Thanks for your help.

Souds like you still have decent returns for your efforts.
i started with IS, DT and FT at the same time with same images, now I got:

FT 248 Pic  112 DL
DT239 Pic   213DL
IS  85 Pic     63 DL

Download per image is comparable,  but not only IS rejects lot more,  slow to build up a portfolio, and also lowest in average $ per download, so in two month I am at it:

I earned 5.7 times more on DT, and 2 times more on FT,

So I think I started to lose interest in them, especially their painful uploading system and rejections.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Street Shots as Editorial?
« on: September 21, 2006, 13:16 »
Out of of my 492 images at SS, maybe 300 is editorial, but they only provide me with less than 10% income, but at least there is one place for my street people pictures:)

Thanks, I have to leave Image manager on in order to preserve that, somehow my image manager never loaded onto the computer, every time I have to rerun set up, I must have some issue with the software, maybe I will ask the Image Manager developer to figure this out.

No, after waiting for all of them uploaded, then the error message comes, nothing goes through, tried many different titles, keywords, still not working, only way u can do is upload one by one, which I rather not to, I guess I will have to wait for a while on this.

Finally I can submit 20 images after over 1 week wait, I inputed all the catergory and title, keywords in a 20 file batch, but the Image Manager keep give me an error message, " title can not have repeated words":(
After a search on the forum, found out that it's a known error, I don't know when they will fix, but my efforts are all wasted, need to reinput, that really sucks:(

Sure, they changed the search order for now, that's why my two hundred images just uploaded never got the boost it ususally will, but time will tell.

Maybe this is one of the reason that I got three Extended sales in two days, ( got 1 in August ) because I do have some images have been selling pretty well, it's in the first page as most popular:)

« on: September 19, 2006, 18:28 »
Welcome to this site.
I am a newbie as well, being only online with micro for 2 months, found out about this site 1 month and half ago, very friendly and helpful site.

Since then I have 1336 pictures at 6 sites, with total downloads of 1014, so pretty happy so far.

But I do consider drop BigStock, they only give me 18 downloads with 160 pictures:(

Thanks for your response, Mark.
That is an interesting thing, has anyone experience a change in their download pattern?

Maybe for people with large portfolio, if they change the search order, you will have a total difference in sales, the persons with a huge portfolio, but not necessary a lot of uploads recently will most likely see an increase in sales, while the person doing lots of uploads recently not getting the new images pops.

Thanks for the quick response.
I understand the initial batch of 250 approved got me a huge boost, there is one day like 50 downloads, but since then I average 50 uploads a week to keep it up, but the overall download has gone down to half as much.

« on: September 19, 2006, 17:21 »
I know I don't have a big portfolio, so maybe the scenario is more like isolate.

I started one month ago with 250 images, and I am getting around 30 downloads per day, so the first half month of August, I finished with 321 downloads and 1 extented sale.

now going into Sept, I have been continuously uploading, as of today, I have 440 images online, but my download is going down, from average 27 per day to average about 13 downloads per day, so with double the image, but less than half the downloads?

The good thing is I am still making good money there, I have two extended sales today, one yesterday, so that will make up for the shortfall of downloads.

Anyone have experienced such uneven pattern?

« on: September 19, 2006, 16:16 »
Typically its' around 350-750 range, I think I have checked most images, maybe I should take the check mark off since some of them are uploaded to BigStock as well.

So with their 90 day policy, you can not sell any exclusive deals elsewherer?

Bigstock.com / Re: Big Stock Revenues
« on: September 19, 2006, 13:00 »
I have on BigStock for almost two months, with 160 pictures, I know it's such a small portfolio, but compared with my revenues from other sites, BigStock really is in the toilet, is it worthwile to keep it?

I have only 18 downloads during the same time, while I have 108 from FT, and 202 from DT, of course SS has 577 downloads in half of the time but double the images ( plus 3 entended license sale!)

With the commitment of 90 days, and low sales, doesn't sound this is a viable place to spend my time on it, what do you think?

Yes, I should have used IPTC to enter all the key words rather than individually, but I guess lessons learned. thanks.

Just got strange rejections from SS, saying " cannot read model release's name" as a reason.
so the whole batch of 20 got rejected . I told them I was the witness, and then they said you can't be the photographer and witness, have someone else sign it and print their name and resubmit the whole thing.

So basically I have to submit the whole thing, and reenter all the key words and everything else for a model release issue, very unfriendly way of handing my work. ??? >:(

if you were rejected first time due to not having 7 out of 10, then the rejection with no reasons are the approved ones, you can resubmit those, I just did that, the 5 resubmission got back in 4 out of 5.

thanks for all the feedback, i will resubmit with more acurate key wording but grouping similar shots together in order to avoid future problem or possible warning from SS, after all it's my biggest money maker now, DT is slightly below them though.

Since I got admitted by SS 20 days ago, I have sucessfully uploaded 329 out of 340, and finished the month with a payout:)
but today I got my big blow, I have 50 photos ( all parade pictures ) rejected 49 out 50 due to wrong keyword/catergory, funny thing is that among the approved ones I have 150 of them approved with identical keywords, and idential scene,  so my question to you is that:
if you have a series of photo shot at the same time, for the same subject, do you still have to have individualized keyword for each individual one, can you use keywords apply to all of them?

I am a newbie, let me start, so to see where I am:

I started in July, and some sites in Aug, overall I have about 29 days average across 6 sites, with a combined images of 1016, and the total for my first full month is : $249.00, so with this math, maybe if I double my portfolio with like kind of quality I maybe able to hit $500/per month.

of course I made 100.25 at SS for 12 days on line with 329 images
89.10 at DT for 36 days on line with 206
the rest is not even close to the two top which include FT, StockXpert, IS, BigStock
