Mixed month leaning to negative compared to same month last year . SS took a >20% drop compared to last year and yet another month when DT again showed decline. PD showed positive growth - and got a happy surprise from Veer due couple of Els. 123RF was a lost case for me this month - as in many recent months and wondering if I should even continue uploading there much longer. Maybe its their ranking system, its doing nothing for me.. Small though positive contributions from Canstock and newer site like Pond5. Other sites were about average. Alamy zilch. Bigstock struggling sales and have stopped uploading there since last year. Have also pulled away from partner sales option on a number of sites.

I would be in for a 100$ too. I think its a small cost for the unethical nature of this deal.

Meanwhile have now received a message from Fotolia (Quote) Your account has already been set to Opt Out. Your images will be removed from DPC shortly. Kind regards, (Unquote) So happy to see the trend that actually lets contributors decide on opt in/ outs. Much prefer this approach to one where any agency forces its decision with no opt outs possible. This may not resolve all the issues but is a clear step in the right direction.

I'm been pretty confused with the developments. First sent message to Fotolia to remove my port from DPC. Meanwhile found button under My Account - My Dashboard and de-listed myself. Shortly after found that the DPC button had disappeared from My Dashboard. Re-found the button under My Profile - Contributor Parameters. It now reads "Don't Sell My Files on DPC". THIS IS IT - I'm opted out.. OR am I ? Went to DPC site - found one of my images there. Clicked on it (as if to download) - but it doesn't seem to pull up for download. Hopefully I'm opted out Thanks much everyone who made all the clear posts on this site.

Have just sent in my opt out request from the Dollar Photo club as well.
I agree that this kind of venture is only helping to accelerate the downward slide in microstock, both due to the low rate as well as liberal terms of use. Most certainly do not want my port to be part of it ...

And done! Good luck with the project

Problems besetting contributors may also have something to do with RPD. The lowered commissions in recent memory, the push to subscription sales, and the more recent endeavors such as Dollar club, are all cases in point.
It should be interesting to evaluate how much revenue decline comes from reduced downloads versus reduction in RPD.
But should one blame Fotolia alone! In a general manner of speaking, the downward slide in micro stock contributor revenue is spread across number of agencies - all desperately chasing clients with the belief that price discounting (under different names) will bring them more market share and greater success. In my opinion nothing could be further from the truth. All that seems to be getting accomplished (with great success) is an overall shift down in revenue and contributor share. If this trend continues, one can foresee the day when contributors will be left without incentive to upload, some agencies would close shop due lack of business, and a select (very) few would garner more market share through smarter strategies than rate dumping.

Exactly the same in my case !!! My images were not showing/ selling on Shotshop (or so I thought). But entered the DP image number and voila there they are on sale at Shotshop. I deactivated a pretty good part of my portfolio from DP already and this motivates me to deactivate more Also am sending DP yet another email on the issue. This is outright and blatant misuse that cannot be legally correct. Its even surprising that a group of contributors have not brought a lawsuit yet.

I made two small mistakes in filling out the march poll Didn't add PP earnings to iStock and didn't put earnings for Alamy. Probably this doesn't skew up the results much at all - and certainly wouldn't account for something like YAY's showing. BTW if there's a way to make these small corrections someone plz let me know.

FT saved the month for me with some good sales. PD positive to last year. Disappointers included SS (flat/ small decrease from last year - and DT with about −15% decrease from last year despite 450 to 500 range new images added). Bigstock came in about half of last year which lays to rest the idea of getting more in sales at lower prices - it ain't happening for me and I stopped uploading new content there some months back - pity because before this debacle they could at least muster up a better RPD. 123RF and Canstock also among my decliners this month. Small contributions from GL and Pond5 (new account). Have reduced content on iStock and that impacts sales there. Deposit came in with some miserable performance, no doubt showing the burden of my opt out from their partnerships and deactivation of content - doesn't matter as it wasn't much sales to begin with and anyway looks like I'm on an exit road from there due agency trust issues ... Am opting out of most distribution deals after the DP experience - I think its important for better control of my port - the opt outs now include Bigstock, 123RF, Alamy. Veer sales are tiny most recent months and I may close account there esp. as they wont allow opt out from partnerships, as I understand. Symbiostock is likely to be my next big stop - soon as I find time to explore setting up a site there

Checked Shotshop and couple other DP partner/ reseller sites at random and did not find my DP content back on these sites. Have already deactivated a good part of my DP port. But will need to continue random checking in future also. I understand that they even keep full res copies of deactivated files - why!!
Finding that my trust with this agency is at an all time ZERO.

Snip.. I asked them to send me list of all partners and resellers... Waiting.
Hope you share with us if you ever get DP to provide you with list of their partners/ resellers/ etc. I for one am very interested where they have spread my content - and at what rates. Also I want to be sure that all the files which I have deactivated from DP recently have been correctly taken down from all their partner sites ..

Found some of my images there too. I haven't uploaded to Veer in a longish while already, and may well close account soon - no big loss as sales have been phenomenally sluggish on my Veer port since many months.
I'm more and more getting behind the idea of clean up and return to basics. Simply applying the 80/ 20 ratio it just doesn't look worth it either for control of work nor the returns many of these sites generate.
Have also marked April in my calendar as I understand that's when one can opt out of Alamy distribution partners ..
Great thread, thanks.

A clearly increasing trend in ODs and SODs at Shutterstock! In my mind it just reinforces SS's position as the industry leader with an improving capture rate, both in volume and in prices. It also blows away a myth that so many other stock sites seem to be pursuing - dumping rates to sub type levels thinking that it will bring them market success. That kind of strategy only devalues our work. And generates less revenue both for the contributor and often for the agency itself (except perhaps 'cases' like DP- Shotshop!!).

Found my images on this site too. It does not show my name/ copyright - and the wording of the image text seems similar to Canstock.
I'm increasingly uncomfortable with this vast dissemination of images with accompanying loss of control. The DP-Shotshop issue is still fresh in mind and that only makes things feel much worse.
Need to figure out how to handle this whole issue of API/ resellers, partners etc. Its starting to feel like a dark and endless abyss.

I have partially deactivated (over one-third of my content up to this time) and also stopped uploading new content. Don't know where to fit this on the survey ..
Is Symbio an 'agency'?
Yes, the content creators own agency.

We should instead focus on agencies who firmly keep their contributors in mind, and who believe in fair trade and fair play - the future belongs to them and we should be part of that success!
Which agencies do you suggest who meet these criteria and wich can also attract customers and stand up to the demands of big buyers for huge discounts?
Should this be a hard one? But some examples from my perspective. For me, Shutterstock works. They have a sub based model and they have the volume to justify that rate. And if I look at the mix there are pretty good OD and occasional SOD etc sales that pump up revenue - the RPD is certainly not the worst I get. I find DT pretty good too. Not quite at par to SS but as images climb in ranking I can see pretty good value creation - although wish they hadn't the sub because its not enough volume to justifies that rate. Then there's a few smaller agencies, like GL - I dont have so much content there but understand that many contributors are happy - although they dont deliver much in sales for me yet. And I think about Symbiostock more and more .. in the longer run it may be a very good way to go. Finally .. although I may not agree with EVERYTHING the above agencies do in terms of their business tactics, however I have not had issues with ethical or questionable behaviors - that says a lot to me.

But this is not the real point. To me the real point is that honestly we, as photographer have what we deserve. Now DP is not the only agency that act unfairly, but is a small earner de facto. A lot of people are scared by Getty because in the end, there they get a lot of money. Their answer is that principle don't feed family and don't pay bills. What I think it's not important and I can get this point, but why DP is so important for a lot of people? Am I missing something? They assure you a lot of money? Really are you so desperate that need this absurd agency? If DP can do this and artists remain with them, then for sure agencies can do whatever they want because they understood that people don't care what happen to their files. If you find that your accountant has stolen your money, are you happy if he returns a third of the amount? And you'll continue to hold him as your accountant? What I'm missing why DP is so special?
Absolutely agree! Every single stock agency is built on Contributor support - we form the backbone of their business, and without our work there is nothing to sell. We should stop contributing to any agency that acts in unfair or unethical manner or in a way that is against contributor interest. Its a powerful message and can change the dynamics of the business. We should instead focus on agencies who firmly keep their contributors in mind, and who believe in fair trade and fair play - the future belongs to them and we should be part of that success!

Must a Symbiostock site be in an individuals' name (photographer) or can it be in a company name instead? (mainly for legal / tax handling reasons).

I delayed the inevitable since I had a very small portfolio. But, I decided to go ahead with my OPT OUT: "Please OPT OUT my FULL portfolio (##) with your agency from all your partnership and reseller programs so that my images will be sold SOLELY on depositphotos.com. Please ensure that my images are removed from all Partners and Resellers at the earliest."
Let me see how quickly this gets done.
It took DP almost a month to take me off their partner sites, claiming that it was a 'difficult technical process'. By comparison, I read another contributor's post that the same thing was done by another agency (DT) promptly and immediately when requested. We can draw our conclusions from that!
