New Sites - General / Re: photocase
« on: May 27, 2016, 07:46 »
I have a few images there that would not have been considered stock anywhere else, but it never seemed worthwhile to produce content for them. I'm actually still not clear how they work since other members can download your images for some type on internal credit system at no cost. Never quite caught on to the culture of the site so gave up after a few weeks.

I've had no problems. Just sales.

Photo Critique / Re: Stocksy rejection-need your opinion
« on: April 09, 2016, 09:10 »
Hey Nina - you have a great portfolio. The editor's are looking for photographers who fit a niche/style not otherwise filled by current members, and I am guessing that lifestyle is a very competitive area right now. No inside knowledge, just my guess.

When my company moved a couple years ago into the heart of the city and a trendy renovation, I went from spacious quarters, to having five linear feet of space on which I somehow cram three computer screens and a television. The funny part is the old sprawling space was very conducive to collaboration, whereas the new space makes it very difficult, despite designers claims otherwise.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sick of getting crumbs
« on: April 01, 2016, 08:06 »
I have done reasonably well in photography over the years. I have worked as a commercial photographer, photojournalist, photo editor (current) and stock photographer. When young photographers ask me about the prospects of earning a good living in photography today I tell them it is unlikely. Some will do well, most won't. If it is a passion then go for it. I have watched the photography industry as a whole decline since the mid-1990s. Rates are static and declining in virtually all areas.  The businesses of many high earning editorial and commercial photographers decline steadily over the years. I know some "name" commercial guys that are now shooting for the factory studios, because the rates cannot justify their studio  overhead.  All that said, I love photography and it is the only thing I have ever known, so I can't imagine another life.

I can tell you from experience on both sides of the equation the answer is definitely no. Not well tracked and usually only taken down by direct request. in print days it was so much simpler ....

Getty has nothing to fear from 500px!

Did you ever think Getty has something to fear from 500px? It is partly funded by Visual China Group which has a long standing partnership with Getty Images that was just deepened by the Corbis deal.

Now a former Getty manager is hired by 500px to head the market.

Can't you guess already what the next exciting news will be? Let me write it for you:

"We are excited to announce a partnership with Getty Images that will allow more customers to see and buy your content. Of course you will still receive your usual 30% of the 20% Getty pays us. But you know what? We might drop the weekly upload limit, so you can give us your images faster than ever."

Betting you are bang on.

AP has been hemorrhaging for years so this is certainly a good thing for them. Shutterstock has been angling to be a full competitor to Getty so this puts them a step closer. Looks like a win win for both companies. For photographers ... who knows.

General - Top Sites / Re: Alamy passed Fotolia??
« on: March 03, 2016, 09:51 »
I have earned more from Alamy than Fotolia over the last few years. That said, I don't earn a lot from either. Alamy  ranks 5th for me right now.

Personally I think it is mostly good in the institutional brand advertising sense -- getting your name as a photographer in front of people. That said, I do know people who have been contact by advertising agencies based on their Instagram images, both to buy an image and to hire the photographer. As said above, you need to put in the effort if you want to make it successful. I post at least one image per day, usually using Latergram to manage it.

A photojournalist friend of mine always used Leica rangefinders when doing street photography, travelling to poor countries, war zones, etc with crappy looking black tape all over them to making them looking like old pieces of junk. He still does that now with with Sonys.

63
I worked as a photojournalist for many years and although I was threatened too many times to count, the only people that actually assaulted me were the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the Maple Leafs players and the corrupt Mayor of a small city. (None were actually much of an assault) I was always lucky I guess, but also had a good sense of what I could get away with and when to back down, etc.

Francisco sent all contributors an email when he closed the site and opened the Etsy store. I believe he asked who was interested in the Etsy thing and said he would delete all other portfolios.

Shoot exclusive. If they accept any image from the shoot, you cannot submit elsewhere.

I work on a cash accounting basis. I report all the income, and use the amounts paid to me in the calendar year shown in my Paypal account for the income numbers. This, along with everything else, goes to the accountant.

Stocksy / Re: Call to Artists 2015
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:28 »
Still waiting as well. I know Stocksy has an awesome collective and I'd love to be a part of but at this point I can't help but think the wait time and lack of communication may be reflective of wider issues with the agency.

I think you would be better to think of it as the time are care that is given to selecting new members. Any wider issues are strictly imaginary. Stocksy is thriving.

Good to hear that you guys are selling images on Stocksy, by the look of it though you are only selling each image once. Yes you get a couple of hundred dollars, but unless that images sells many more times how will it cover your ROI, if you shot a model and had to hire equipment or a studio. Does not really matter that you got a couple of hundred dollars for a one off sale infact if you look at it like that it is a bit of a rip off.
I should think thet stocksy makes you exclusive and certainly the client will want exclusivity.

Why would you think we only sell a file once? Personally, I have many sales on numerous popular files, and I am sure this is the norm not the exception.

72
I think you are asking about a GST number. If you are in business in Canada and earn more than $30K/year the government requires you to have a GST number and to collect GST from people that you invoice. They are allowed to claim part of it back, so clients you invoice require your GST number to appear on the invoice. Not applicable to stock photography that I can see, since you are not invoicing the agencies.

Well said Cobalt!

Newbie Discussion / Re: Big Stock customer service.
« on: September 14, 2015, 14:03 »
This is Big Stock reply. What do you think of this customer service.? ""The actual day the check is mailed can vary and the time it takes to reach you via the postal system cannot be determined. We ask that contributors allow at least 2 months before contacting Bigstock when they have not received their check.""

I'll have to remember that one next time a bill come due. Let's see how my credit card company responds to that message.
