Veer / Re: Unacceptable review times at Veer
« on: November 04, 2010, 10:59 »
what sort of turn around you Guys have to getting your work up on Veer
I really don't care. I upload when I have time and forget about it. Veer does generate some sales this is all I am interested to know (taking into account the sales aren't very high).

Alamy.com / Re: Do you NU?
« on: November 04, 2010, 02:33 »
yes of course I am putting my pictures as RF at Alamy. This wasn't my point though, I was talking about NU.

do you know there is a greasemonkey script made just for that particular issue? Works very well if you use firefox.

(which indeed doesn't answer why istock can't fix it at the source)

Alamy.com / Re: Do you NU?

well, Alamy doesn't restrict submission of my micro portfolio, so I don't see anything unfair allowing Alamy to sell my pictures at low price if they are same pictures I already sell on micro anyway...

P.S.  Expires November 19, 2010 - http://www.moo.com/partner/nyc2010
(not a referral link)

Thanks, that worked fine! Not a bad deal to get 50 full-color double-sided business cards for 3.50 Eur (shipment).

I think it's worth to add that in case you don't do much video editing and don't have software capable of creating quicktime movies you can use freeware video converter MPEG streamclip (http://www.squared5.com)

Would something (VERY SIMPLE and cheap) like this work on the 5D II? - http://goo.gl/mTIa -

it will probably work but they don't provide enough technical details to say for sure

for example Sony ECM-DS70p will work, as well as other consenser microphones using either a battery or a plugin power.

158
the connector of your mic implies it might need external power which will not come from Canon... so it might mean that you would need a pre-amp to use it.

What kind of video are you planning to shoot? You don't need sound at all for any stock footage. Internal mic of 5D Mk II is good enough for family type shooting. And if you are planning to get serious about interview/reportage and/or movie production you will need to invest either to a decent mic or to an external recorder.

I just bought Zoom H1 recorder (which is quite cheap option for around $100) - it's light and can be mounted on top of the camera, or can be used hand-held for interviews... It is not as well built as H4 and has fewer option but is cheaper, lighter and still has very good quality mics and good quality recording.

oh yes, I thought I heard the name somewhere, so now I know why :)

no office address, no phone number, no single person name on the site - and you are asking for a photocopy of my passport! Great start :D

If Miklav could change that mistake of mine on his blog maybe we can halt that one piece of information from spreading any further.
Hi Jonathan and all - no problem I made a correction in my blog.

162
Through the last 100+ years top photography professionals kept coaching and teaching photography the younger generations. This has always been the nature of photography. This is also natural for many other artistic professions.

I don't see why such successful photographer like Sean would need to worry about teaching the "competitors". Vast majority of them will remain far below your level. A few talented ones might reach your level or exceed it - but if they are talented and hardworking they would get there anyway. If I had a chance to help some one talented to grow his talent I would be proud of that rather than worried.

163
You only need to take a quick look at his microstock portfolio to see that in 2008 he had nowhere near 3500 photos in his portfolio on any of the microstock sites (he hasn't got that amount today either!)

Yes he has got that amount :)
Just have a look yourself: http://www.fotolia.com/p/200440429

(not all of 3.5K photos equally accepted by all sites)

Some of the comments made here are amazing :) Sorry to disappoint you but Russians do already know what is microstock and they even know what is Hasselblad ;) And some even use it :D

Russian-speaking photographers represent significant portion of microstock. Some of the very successful microstockers are based in Russia or neighbor countries, such as
- Cimmerian (iStock exclusive)
- paha_l
- elnur
- shironosov (organizer of STOCKinRUSSIA)
- piskunov (iStock exclusive)
- dpaint
- anouchka (iStock exclusive)
(just a few from the top of my head)

So I suppose it gives you a hint why it makes sense to organize such kind of conference in Russia :)

I wonder when something similar will start happening in Poland (or Serbia or another Central European country) - there are many talented and successful microstockers in that area too.

Remark: Just to be precise - the specific numbers about Jonathan's microstock experiment came from CEPIC rather than from his speech in Moscow. As there has been certain overlap of what he was saying in 2 events I combined the bullet points in one blog post.

He made his experiment in 2008 and he was talking about total return over one year. I suspect his monthly figures went down since then as he doesn't contribute to microstock any longer (but he is going to)

165
Thank you for posting!

For those interested I put together in my blog post a few bullet points from Jonathan Ross speech: http://miklav.blogspot.com/2010/10/jonathan-ross-in-stock-photography.html

Microstock Services / Re: isyndica is closing
« on: September 27, 2010, 06:30 »
Wow... We almost joined them 2 months ago but I thought their integration fee was too high and we decided not to... I'd be pretty mad if we did...
pixmac did that, their preferred submission method is (was) via isyndica...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Monopod
« on: September 26, 2010, 16:46 »
MikLav,

What focal lenghs did you use when trying the monopod?

Curious, I always thought it would be useful, but then we have two here saying no.  ???

85mm

P.S. I also was thinking about an alternative to my rather bulky 10-yrs-old Manfrotto 190 and last year I bought Slik Pro 330DX. I am quite happy with it - it is very stable yet quite light (I could make it lighter by replacing the head but I am ok for now with the original one); and it's very easy to remove the central column if I need to fit it into my smaller travel bag (more details here: http://miklav.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html)

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Monopod
« on: September 26, 2010, 16:10 »
I was thinking about monopod and I once tried and shoot about 70% of one outdoor session with monopod (using Canon 5D Mk 2). Looking at resulting pictures I don't see any difference compared with handheld mode (such as percent of sharp pictures was the same). Using monopod was indeed less convenient than handheld.

So for me personally monopod is useless and I decided not to buy one. I use handheld for all people shots (whether it's studio or outdoor) and I use tripod for low-light outdoor pictures.

I suspect the story might be different if you use much heavier medium-format gear.

I am not uploading for the time being; and I removed 20-30 of old non-selling pics. Not really a protest, but I was considering that for a while and now is a good moment :)

Adobe Stock / Re: Terrible review acceptance at FT
« on: September 22, 2010, 04:48 »
FT accepts my pictures very well when I send them studio people shots.

FT rejects vast majority of my landscape, cityscape, industrial and architecture shots even they are good quality, vivid colors and accepted by other stocks.

So, FT is very selective on the subject; and technical quality is of the secondary priority for them.

123RF / Re: No reviews this month
« on: September 22, 2010, 04:31 »
my photos were reviewed couple days ago after 2 weeks of waiting
BTW it was similar to Shutterstock in a way that all batches submitted during 2 weeks of waiting were all reviewed at the same time.

Panthermedia.net / Re: Panther Media Upload / Contributor Back End
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:34 »
it is a pity really that the new submit interface doesn't come for so long. Even my tiny portfolio of 105 pictures does generate regular sales (a few per month) - so I feel it would make sense to upload my other ~1400 photos... but I don't have enough patience to do it with the current interface.

174
BTW it does now work in Safari in W7 64bit :)
