StockXpert.com / Re: Newly uploaded images at StockXpert not found in search« on: March 12, 2009, 06:42 »
My images can be found via keywords, that's not a problem.
However I think they changes something in search algorithm, maybe StockXpert version of "best match" or something. In the past all my new images started getting some view next date, and now they stay with 0 view for weeks just as you all say. Also my sales isn't anymore growing with new uploads which was the case in the past. They stay pretty much flat... 428

I find the application to be very useful, user friendly, stable and pretty fast.if only it wasn't exclusive for istock ![]() 429
General Photography Discussion / Re: My new site, please critique« on: March 09, 2009, 18:09 »
The design is nice but flash sites are very unfriendly to the users. No way to provide a link to an individual page (for example if I want to point my friend to one); and also non-SEO friendly.

It's just Flash on the start page that isn't working in IE, the rest is working fine (gallery, contact page, about etc). I can't say why Flash isn't showing in IE but at least it's clear what to look for

It's too early for any conclusions - your portfolio looks good for stock but it's only 67 pictures - so keep up the good work and success will come

Microstock News / Re: Zymmetrical User stole my images« on: March 06, 2009, 12:08 »The thing that really, really troubles me about these partnerships (It's not just this PM one, it's also JI subs for example) is the fact the copyright holder is not given any form of credit. It's just not right. Jan Will's penguins will appear in a magazine with a credit line something like "Photo by Lynx" or "(c) Zymmetrical". Agencies are our distributors, not the owners of the content.Unfortunately that happens even without partnership - quite often photos are credited "istockphoto" or "fotolia" or whatever agency and not the photographer. That's part of microstock licensing scheme - the publishers don't have to provide the credit to photographer... 434

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 5d mk1 and 5d mk11« on: March 04, 2009, 08:33 »
After using 40D for 1.5 years one minor thing that impresses me in 5D Mk II is large and very crisp display. Very different feeling after 40D.
I keep 40D for backup, and for wide-angle shots (I have EFS 10-22 lens and am not going to invest to a full-frame wide anlge). 438
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 04, 2009, 08:31 »
I think DT is one of the best microstock players in several areas. The only issue I see with them is that the language of their response is sometimes too strong.
FTP works fine. Sometimes they have delays with transfer of FTP uploads to their site but I only saw in once in the last few months (uploading at least weekly, usually more often). My sales on DT is comparable with Fotolia. It's behind SS and StockXpert but much better than 123 or BigStock. BTW inspectors don't have to be be good photographers. Movie critiques aren't good movie makers. Art experts aren't great artists. Many of great sport trainers aren't good sportsmen. 439

I don't think autofocus is a big issue; but lack of manual aperture control indeed is. And I am sure it is easy one to add.

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: How to force Canon 5D mark II video aperture - manual override« on: March 02, 2009, 03:07 »
Yes it should be easier, but unfortunately Canon didn't do it that way (yet).
People are accepting to work all those obstacles because of the picture quality that is so much better comparing to budget camcorders. 443

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: How to force Canon 5D mark II video aperture - manual override« on: March 01, 2009, 06:39 »
more precisely the method is:
* put it in LiveView mode * put it in -2 or +2 exposure compensation depending you want to close of to open the aperture * press shutter button half-way to see the exposure settings * move camera to/away from light until you get a right aperture * press * button to lock the settings * use exposure compensation wheel to set the right exposure it works only for one shoot, you need to repeat every time you press Stop ======================= perhaps a better option is to use old manual lens with an aperture ring. For example I have a couple lens with M42 connector and an adapter from M42 to Canon; some people use old Nikon lens with adapter. ======================= a forum devoted to video production with 5D Mk II: http://cinema5d.com/ 445
Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: Canon 5D mark II Video Workflow« on: February 28, 2009, 17:23 »
Basic editing can be done with freeware avidemux (http://avidemux.org). Works fast, allows to trim beginning/end of the clip, allows to apply some filters to the picture, and you can remove audio with it. You can also convert formats and resize your video with avidemix.
It is not a tool for full-scale NLE when you have multiple scenes with transitions between, but it's a handy utility for quick basic edit of separate clips. (I used to use VirtualDub in the past for that kind of work, but VirtualDub can't open MOV files from 5D Mk II, so I found avidemux instead). P.S. Just found a forum devoted to video production with 5D Mk II: http://cinema5d.com/ P.P.S. Although Canon doesn't provide manual controls in video mode there is a workaround to force one of 4 aperture values (22, 16, 5.6, 2/full open) 446

General Stock Discussion / Re: I reached plateau« on: February 26, 2009, 17:57 »
It is typical for many microstockers to come to a plateau at some point. You do certain things certain way and with certain pace and you reach the ceiling at the end. That means you reached the top at your level. I was on a plateau myself from mid 2007 till mid 2008. Then I changed that.
To overcome that situation you need to change your level. Some factors I would name: * become a better photographer. Learn from books, learn from others, attend workshops and practice... * take your photoshop skills to the next level - get more from your photos * evaluate your subjects and possibly make adjustments. If you have a very strong preference in some area - learn to make it perfectly well. Most of the the time preference isn't absolute - so why not trying new things and step beyond your zone of comfort? * make more photos - better than before and on wider variety of subjects. 449
