General Stock Discussion / Re: iStock Something Is Wrong!!
« on: November 13, 2012, 15:28 »
Wow...if you can go four days without sales on a portfolio like that it's more than a bit scary.  You have so many files I can see why dropping the crown would be a lot of work.  I'm sure its something to do with search tweaks so hopefully it will come back around with the next adjustment!  That was the scariest part of being exclusive for me.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Should I buy ktools
« on: November 12, 2012, 14:39 »
If you want a functioning search out of the box get CMS. Anton is also nicer to deal with when it comes to support.   Get your watermark right and don't plan to modify templates much, unless you have a lot of html/css/php experience.

If you want to really customize things ktools is easier to work with but be warned there are a lot of small updates coming close together at this point in V4 and it's a pain to upgrade if you've customized heavily because they are still adding features that change the template files.  The search needs a lot of work for whatever reason they seem to be complicating it more than a simple AND search that just gives buyers images with the tags they typed in.

The biggest plus I've found with ktools vs CMS is slight SEO advantage with more Google traffic in the ktools store but both scripts have a lot of room for improvement there.

Good luck!

Search relevancy for words is a great idea but what really needs to be looked is searching with multiple terms. If a customer types in three words for example: woman shopping

The first results should be images that include both of those terms.  As it is now on my site I'd get a few dozen images that only have the keyword woman above images that are tagged with all three. This is a major issue.

Secondly, I am personally finding that customer service could be better with Ktools.  It seems like there is a somewhat defensive approach of "our software is fine, the users are just being picky and/or don't understand."

I get that developers would rather spend time developing new features than dealing with support issues, and probably get a lot of what they consider dumb questions, but in my experience the general tone has been more along the lines of "the customer is probably wrong" than "what can we do to improve." Just some honest feedback.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Ktools 4 customisation
« on: November 07, 2012, 16:59 »
I don't find ktools hard to modify at all actually and I've worked with other scripts that were much more "nightmarish".  The one thing that could be vastly improved is the way updates are being handled, I cringe every time I see more changes to the smarty template files and the main css files. I thought the point of the smarty system was so that updates to the software can be made without affecting the templates files for the most part.  It's a real pain to go through all of my template files to figure out what needs to be updated without overwriting my customizations.  Even a change log would make the process easier.

255
That is awesome! It's great to hear some positive news :)

256
I attempted to but it throws a server error because it apparently relies on some additional updated files in 4.1.1 which he's working on now but it sounds like that one is getting pushed out pretty quickly to fix some known bugs. Someone else got the same result so we are just waiting for the next update to see exactly what it does.

257
Yeah there seem to be a few kinks to work out on the newer features.  Good news though, there is some search updating underway and Jon posted a preview of some of the changes that will be in 4.1.1 that he says will be released soon.  So things are moving along.

I'm sure I'm going to end up hiring a pro to do more tweaking in the future for things that are over my head in the code department but with a few more of the upcoming features and fixes in place Photostore v4 will be pretty robust out of the box.

258
Unfortunately there is still no timeline that I've seen on the search fix despite asking several times.  It also seems that the next big project is Rights Managed pricing.  I don't know exactly what's driving the order of these particular additions, but to me it seems that a proper search should come first or people won't be on your site long enough to find images from additional photographers or with rights managed licensing.

I'm not excited about the addition of a $89 add on before main features that would be useful to all the current customers are finished.

Photo Critique / Re: Confused about font use
« on: October 05, 2012, 15:00 »
Generally a proper commercial license for a font would include uses like this and the end user would not have to license the font since they don't have access to the actual usable font file, just the flat image file with the words you've added.

In a non vector file there shouldn't be any issue with this unless for example you wrote out the entire alphabet or set of numbers (which no respectable stock library would take anyway!) so you should be fine in the instance you describe.

260
Thanks for the explanation Jeff, I see what is happening there.  I'm doing some research to see if it's worth creating 301's or putting the duplicate entries in my robots.txt file as someone on the ktools forum suggested.  Good to know when editing titles in the future!

261
I've been perusing my Google webmaster tools today to see if I could figure out a bit of a traffic drop I'm seeing on my ktools site and I see it's come up with over a 100 Duplicate meta descriptions.

It appears that when I've adjusted a title for an image another page is generated with the updated SEF url but the old one is still seen by google and flagged as being duplicate...forgive me I am an artist first and SEO is new to me...is this something anyone else is seeing with your ktools sites, or is there an obvious fix I am missing?

262
I'd be really interested in in seeing where this goes and what you come up with fee wise.  I think a one time set up fee would be good to get the theme installed, how are you handling hosting? Would we be able to self host and register our own domain?

263
For me it seems like the best option is to have the ktools default search be as close to the most popular micro stock searches as possible for the best chance of our independent sites competing we must be able to give customers what they are used to.

On the other micro stock sites and Google images search for example they do not have to use quotes or check a box to search for the word they type in, and if they use two search terms they can expect images with both of those terms to show up FIRST. This is the most important thing in my mind.  customers are not searching for single terms for the most part. As both a long time designer/buyer and a micro stock contributor/site owner I rarely if ever type in just one term, and when I type in a phrase I expect images that have all of the tags I've put in.

Weighted searches would be absolutely an amazing addition to this script BUT starting out with the basics to match our biggest competition (match all terms AND exact match by default) is essential!

I was seeing the same thing earlier with Chrome but it looks to be fixed now! By the way is that a custom thing you have set up that will automatically give 20 credits?  I've been thinking of playing with a sign up bonus.

I agree.  I've been a bit frustrated by some of the important features that they left out of v4 before release such as batch editing, proper search and extended license options.  To me these are far more important (as well as getting a few obnoxious bugs fixed) than the development of the contributors add on which I don't intend to purchase.

When I was looking into buying I went and researched a lot of sites I knew ran on ktools and chose it because it looked like it had everything I needed, but it appears in some respects v4 has taken a step backwards.

Have you checked the Digital Versions tab of the images and made sure to check "Create Automatically" for each digital profile on each image...you have to do this manually which is QUITE a pain but it is supposedly on the list to be fixed in a future update.

269
Are you on version 3.x or 4.0.9?  Version 3 includes the option for match all terms, version four does not. There is literally no way to do an "AND" search. Actually one of the things I really liked about ktools which prompted me to switch was the drop down option in V3 that let people choose to match all terms, any terms etc.  I wrongly assumed that would be included in V4.

270
The truth is ktools version 4 search engine does not work as it is.  When a buyer can go to any site you consider competition, type in palm trees (no quotes) and get palm trees, but on your site gets every image tagged tree, trees, etc you are clearly at a disadvantage.

Also it does not take a million dollars worth of development to have a search that works.  I've been working with a competing script to ktools that costs slightly less and has a normal search function that give the buyer images with all of the tags they searched for as it should.

Unfortunately I seem to be talking to myself when asking about this on the ktools forum and facebook page and it doesn't seem like other users are aware of this or as concerned as they should be.

Apologies for jumping in off topic but this is a giant frustration for me at the moment!

Selling Stock Direct / Re: K-Tools Hosting
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:45 »
I'd be really careful about moving to Bluehost, I'm having issues with them lately running ktools , I'm seeing super high server loads according to the widget in ktools manager and some throttling recorded on my account recently which is new. It's certainly not due to overwhelming traffic as I haven't launched yet. Just a shared hosting hazard.  I've been looking seriously at a move to Media Temple. I've used bluehost since 2005 I'd still recommend them for general hosting but not for a large ktools site.

Thanks Leaf!  CMS account is a great script especially for the price and I've always found Anton to provide great support but it was lacking and important feature for me personally, I wanted to be able to offer different sized JPGs as well as PNGs and EPS formats of my illustrations and currently CMS account only supports the JPG option (multiple sizes can be generated) or a Zip file option that you can sell any format but they can't be combined. With the new Photostore it's super easy to add additional formats to each file.

The other big deciding factor for me was ease of editing the templates, I want to do a fair amount of customization and with CMS account I found it a bit difficult to maintain my changes after upgrades.  I just did the first upgrade of Photostore last night and everything was super smooth no need to touch up my templates.

There were a few other little things I found that pushed me to try out the new script, the watermarks can be updated at any time without having to re generate any thumbnails, in some cases I'd like to add an image to more than three categories, in CMS Account there is a limit of 3 including parent categories.

I will be continuing to use both CMS account (converting that store more into selling design templates and such) and Photostore for the stock image side moving forward.  I'll definitely post a link here when I get the new site launched.

@Cathy thanks for sharing that, love seeing things in use!

@ Lisa - I almost emailed you last week I was wondering about a few tweaks and thinking of seeing who you found for customization but Jon is already adding the features I wanted to tweak, new changes seem to be happening pretty quickly, they've been super responsive to people's feedback on the forums.

If you have a customized version of K-Tools 3 I can see why you'd stay with it for now, until the tool is done to help port images and info it sounds like it will be a big undertaking.

273
I've been working on setting up a new site based on version 4 as well, I'm coming from running a CMS Account site for about a year and I also tried out Pixaria, so far I'm really impressed by Ktools v4 with the exception of some search features that need to be added but in the two weeks since I took the dive and purchased the script they have already come out with an upgrade expanding on it and have another planned soon with even more of the features people have been requesting on the forums.

3 problems with this very bad advice:

1. How do you know that the website or blog has not licensed your RF image legitimately from your agent ? Even at a site like Pinterest there may be users who have licensed your RF image.

2. There is a good chance that sending out these sorts of letters will result in your Paypal account being suspended. At least pending further investigation.

3.  It is the job of your agent to liaise with clients. If you are not happy that your agent is doing enough then you need to address the issue to them.

All very very good points.  It's so easy to get caught up in spending to much time, effort and negative energy into assumed violations.

Image Sleuth / Re: StumbleUpon
« on: June 07, 2012, 00:23 »
Let's stop having kittens here. StumbleUpon doesn't host anything. It's basically a social bookmark sharing site - someone sees something, they like it, and it gets shown to other users with similar interests. And it's been around a long time - it's a great way to get your work shown to users with interests in photography.

"When you press the Stumble button, a message is sent to the StumbleUpon database that most likely is just your User ID. The database looks up the categories that you chose when you signed up. From there, the application most likely chooses one of those categories randomly. Then the application goes through that category and finds a webpage in that category that is new to you, and directs your browser to that page."

I agree, at a certain point we have to understand that a lot of the audience originally targeted by the Microstock industry is made up of bloggers, stay at home moms, crafters etc with small budgets that rely on things like social media to promote and grow their businesses. When they license our images - they are doing so to create an aesthetic that helps bring attention to their growing brand, therefore when social media sites like Stumble Upon and Pinterest take advantage of visual bookmarking to help bring traffic to these independent sites the people who originally licensed these images are doing nothing wrong.

As an illustrator a lot of my clients that come through stock channels for custom work are from this same crowd that I've seen people here look down upon in the past few weeks with the whole Pinterest furor. In fact some of the blatant attacks are just needless.  Housewives start businesses too, and when they do in my experience they license images they've previously bookmarked on sites like this.  I think of it as an external lightbox.
