Yaymicro / Re: impressed with yaymicro this month
« on: January 08, 2009, 13:49 »
Over 1800 images on the site for months and zero sales. Most people on Yay have zero sales. The future of Yay does not look bright for me.

Do you know the words to the "Lucky Oliver" song?

Have to agree with Lisa on this one. If your Chevy is starting to become one of your better friends it's probably time to get out a bit more often. Enjoy  ;D

Best,
AVAVA

Whats wrong with a Chevy? Nothing, if you have a Ford to pull it around with. Ford is my new best friend. Whats yours?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Time to end this never ending thread. Yes?

I must be doing something wrong cause I got like $7 with BigStock and above $100 with 123RF in half a year.

Do you think that having 3643 images on 123rf and only 194 images on BigStock could have anything to do with it? What is your RPI for both sites?

Canon / Re: How many shots have I taken?
« on: January 05, 2009, 09:32 »
The good new is I got my 5D II.  The bad news is I got two of them from different sources (long story, won't bore you with the details), both shipped the same week - one the kit, the other body only.  I want to return the kit because I don't need the lens, but B&H won't take them back if you have over 200 shots on the counter.

I have no idea how many test shots I have taken.  I zeroed out the camera when I prepared to return it but apparently there is some internal counter in the camera that tells them how many shots.  I doubt I shot over 200 test shots with it, but would like to be certain otherwise they will charge a restocking fee of over $500.

Anyone know how to check how many actual shots were fired?

Why not ask B&H how you can check it yourself. Or how they check it.

If you are over 200 and cannot return it ... sell the lens and camera separately. Not ebay! To someone you trust or will put cash in your hand. If I had the extra money I would send you a bank certified check or money order for it.

Good luck!

Canon / Re: Best price you have seen for a Canon lens
« on: January 05, 2009, 07:19 »
I have this lens, I bought it from B&H paid $1049.00 and worth every penny! I love it.

Here is a good review of this lens and bookmark the site. The tester knows what he is talking about!!

http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/188-canon-ef-24-105mm-f4-usm-l-is-lab-test-report--review

I have had a rejection for "over sharpening" and I did not sharpen the image!! Dumb reviewer!! It is the sharpest lens I have ever owned!!

-Larry

I can assume you have never owned the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro then?  ;D Sometimes described as an "L" lens masquerading as a standard lens.

Put me on the list of people who "needs" the 24-105 to replace my 28-135 as a general walkabout lens. Only criticism has been CA around the edges, some distortion, wide open at 24mm. I can live with that for the zoom range it offers. Some people have gotten less than perfect copies, which goes back to factory QC, not the lens itself. I've never owned one of the out of standards Canon lenses, but ever lens review I've read, it seems that now and then someone will get one.

Many people comment that it's sharper and lighter than their 24-70.

I see people buying the kit and selling the lens, for more than it cost them. Another place to look for good deals on used equipment is FM Forums. After that, I usually buy new from B&H who has consistently very low prices. ($959 free shipping) If you're a fan of Andorama, substitute their name in the previous sentence. These are the two sites that are very professional and work on short margins.

Bought my last lens, a Canon 100-400, locally for more, because I'd like the place to stay in business. It's my small contribution.

I should have stated it is the sharpest ZOOM lens I ever owned.

Never tried the 100mm 2.8 macro,

General Stock Discussion / Re: how do you measure your success ?
« on: January 04, 2009, 15:48 »

I'm successfull by those standards.

i should have waited longer to post BigStock's move up the ladder ..... they just recently slipped back down to 7th place. Oh well, there is always next month.  ;D

-Larry

Well they are last among the 7 sites I submit to - and a long way from number 6.  I just had my third 0 dl month in 18 months with them (only other site where that has happened for me is LuckyOliver) and have never had more than 3 dls in a month there.  I am just waiting to reach payout so I can leave - don't like their 90 day lock in policy.  (DT's six month policy is worse but at least I get a few bucks every month off of DT).  fred

I do not see how anyone could have a zero DL month with BigStock unless they have a handfull of It images. You do not have a link to your BigStock port so there is no way I could take a look and possibly guess at the problem.

I had 2 dls my first few days on BigStock 2 1/2 years ago with 6 or 7 images.
The last two years I have 30-60 DLs a month with 2,000+ images.

-Larry

Sure - My port is here.

It is very small and I have only been doing MS for 18 months so I can certainly use any help I can find but the same images haven't done so badly elsewhere - i.e. SS, SX, DT, IS, FT - except for Lucky Oliver.

Thanks.

fred

Fred,
Your port is small but very nice.

Switzerland is a very beautiful country and the golf courses there are the most scenic in the world! Plus ski lodges and skiers! Take advantage of your natural bonuses and shoot them over and over. They WILL sell.

Sure wish I could come there and show you what your already looking at!

Don't give up on BigStock too quick as outdoor sports (any) sell well there and around the world.

I will trade you my house for yours. Interested?

BigStock is now in the big six. Congrats BigStock you earned it!

I know as a member of BigStock I have had bad words to say about them from time to time, but all in all I still like the management and the site in general.

My problems with them have been mostly remarks by reviewers. (I don't think they still work there as the bad mouth remarks have disappeared.)

If you are not on BigStock perhaps you should be. I'm sure they are aiming for the top position on the totem pole. ;D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Were you Happy with 2008?
« on: January 01, 2009, 09:20 »
I thought this year was worse than last year but ..... after I added it all up with over 1,000 sales (no subs!)
In 2008 I earned a whopping big sum of $2.40 more than in 2007  ;D

I think I will try to do better next year.

Happy New year to all,

Computer Hardware / Re: Do you calibrate your monitor?
« on: December 28, 2008, 20:54 »
i use Spyder 3 Pro I would not dream of using a computer with a monitor that is not calibrated!

It is the ONLY way to accurately reproduce what your monitor is displaying. (for web or print)

If a reviewer is not using a calibrated monitor, the employing site has no control over their quality. Just guess work.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you back up your images?

External HD (originals and editions) and DVDs (basically originals).  I don't keep copies at another place, though it seems a good strategy.

Regards,
Adelaide

You will know it is a good idea if your house burns down as my old studio did. Keep your back ups in two places ... but not in the same building! ;D

I use Carbonite..

Cheap and above all, unlimited storage for almost no money!  http://www.carbonite.com/raf/signup.aspx?RAFUserUID=336374

I've been using it for quite some time and it seems to be working great! It does not slow down the internet connection while backing up.

It might be worth a try  ;)

I know that many folks use the net to store images and that may be 99.999 safe. But what if the site is corrupted or sabotaged and their back up fail? It would not be the first.

General Stock Discussion / How do you back up your images?
« on: December 27, 2008, 20:19 »
Just a bit curious how other photographers back up their images to protect against total loss!

Me: I back up all RAW files to a DVD or CD then a copy goes to a safe deposit box at my bank. And I also have an exact copy at home. (Note: I ONLY shoot RAW.)

I had a studio burn down and lost over 250,000 images. Mine and customers from commercial shoots as well as weddings etc. I learned my lesson.

I do not trust any web site to keep my images safe for me.

Your thoughts?

Dreamstime.com / Re: Advise on DT Please beefore I upload to them.
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:11 »
Just so you know you cant take down your images for 6 months, everything else about DT I like.  This one policy really sucks though if you want to go exclusive at IS so be sure and plan ahead if you are considering it.

Thanks for the info!

I will never go exclusive with any site unless EVERY photographer on the site is exclusive. That would be a site to create! Something different that is not "I got that image also" Plus this site would need a strong track record of sales, etc.

Once I upload to a site (any) I have no intention of removing my portfolio even if they sell very slowly.

As far as the sites that have you submit 10 images and wait for some zit face kid that thinks he/she is the only person in the world that knows anything about photography and they can reject one and have me resubmit in 30 days. They can go fly a kite!

On an additional note: I like your DT port. Nice variety and I noticed they do take similar images, flowers and other things many other folks said they would not take. I'm glad you had a link to your port as I was able to "see" who you are and I place a much higher value of your oppinion over those that do not link sites to their post. I bet some do not even have a site to link!  ;D

Thanks again,

I'm already ahead of the months of Sept, Oct, and Nov, with 12  or so days left  to go. It will be a good but not a record month for me. Last year was twice as good for all the above months.

Golf is what I am selling right now. The rich boys will still play their game!

Go golf images!  ;D

A couple of years back I sold a few things on ebay with no problems at all.

A couple of months ago I sold an iMac, since I bought a laptop. It sold for over $500. The buyer paid me promptly and I shipped the computer next day, UPS with tracking info. Paypal would not release the money to me until a) the buyer received the shipment and Paypal could verify tracking info or b) the buyer left positive feedback on ebay.

I provided BOTH things and yet Paypal would not release the money. After speaking to three different people who gave me various sorts of runarounds and told me there wasn't anything they could do, I finally spoke to a supervisor (about three days later) who released the money.

I use Paypal to receive all of my microstock payments and never have an issue, but I will NEVER sell anything on ebay again. Ebay and Paypal are linked so closely that it seems like the way to go. My beef isn't really with ebay, but with the Paypal connection.

eBay owns PayPal ... if you deal on eBay your stuck with them. That is why I quit after 10 years.
