Aren't you supposed to be a copyright OWNER to sell prints on FAA??

I guess the answer is yes, but the keyword is "have the right to grant license" which may be considered the Getty contract.

Corbis, National Geographic and ironically Google also sale there although the Google things appear just to be their various Google slogans

103
Getty does the same thing on Zazzle.  I assume they might be on some of the other POD sites as well.

http://www.zazzle.com/prophoto

They don't appear to give credit to the photographer, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks for getting the right link up there Pixart. It may have been because it was the profile link and you have to be a member to see it? I don't know.

(but am wondering if I should try a Fine Art America account too!)

You have to do a lot of self promotion. They don't advertise for you and it isn't a "let's see if this is stock worthy or not site" Anyone can upload there and a lot of painters do this. You can set your own prices there and if you don't want to do the POD, they let you set up your own website so you can sale direct but the printing and transactions go through you with a private site, not the POD part. All costs for framing and such is paid for by the buyer on the POD part, so that is above the cost you post and you do not get paid for that part of it. It costs $30.00 a year. Look at the recently sold, under the "shop" tab at the top to get an idea of what type sales there. I just started it so I can't say how well it works.

I thankfully deleted my port there over a year ago and am so thankful I did. The morals behind this company are so questionable which was why I left. I really find it hard to believe that Getty only got $60.00 a pop for these images. This company is based on GREED. Why would they put top selling images on Goggle to be downloaded for free if they weren't making a huge profit. Some of you figured at $60.00 a pop that's about $360,000.00 based on 6000 images. Getty is a huge company and $360,000.00 isn't much money in their eyes for a long term deal like Google. Then if they paid everyone their share of $12.00, then that puts their profit at $288,000.00. I don't think they would do that for such a low amount of money. We'll probably never see the contract to know what they really were paid for these images.

I really feel for you contributors that depend on this income for a living. Your really stuck between a rock and a hard place and iStock has you by the balls. I really believe this is probably why the majority of these images are exclusives. I know there is a count going on here as far as how many images will be deleted on Feb 2nd, which is really a small amount, but there are many contributors out there that don't post on forums that are or have already deleted their images to protect what is left. The number is probably higher than you think.

I feel that deactivating images is a good idea, but I see some mentioning they are deactivating the ones that are non sellers. How does that protect your images? Getty isn't going to put an image that hasn't sold on Google, only the sellers which Google would want. They are probably still supplying images as we speak, so as some have mentioned they are deactivating their best sellers and model released images.

Even for those of us that have port elsewhere are effected by this, and even those that don't plan to leave because they think it is better for them that a bunch of you are leaving. Put simply, if you were a customer, and saw an image you liked, but then saw one on the Google Drive that might be as good but is free....wouldn't you go for the free one? It effects us all. Think about it.

General Macrostock / Getty Selling Images On Fine Art America
« on: January 15, 2013, 11:07 »
In case no one knows what Fine Art America is, it is basically a place you can put your portfolio to sell as prints. You pay $30.00 a year and you keep all the proceeds from the sale. I noticed from a thread on there that there was a photographer who found his photo on Fine Art America being sold there under Getty Images. Getty has their own port on there.

http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/gettyimages.htm

This discussion was about 6 months ago on Flicker. Here is the flicker link about the discussion.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/olympusesystem/discuss/72157630814751472/

The name of the photographer is under the view, but when you click on the view there is no link back to their portfolio on Getty, it is sold directly from Fine Art America. Can Getty sale prints from a competing site that is not owned by them?

This may be old news on here, but in case it isn't just thought I'd let you know.

I left them all except Shutterstock about a year ago. Just got tired of all the BS. Found a better way to make money off my hard earned work.

Thank goodness I dropped them after the royalty reduction!!! I dropped them all except for Shutterstock and I found that my sales increased since I'm not anywhere else now.

I hope all of you good luck because I know that some of you depend on this income. I'm thankful I do not.

109
It does take a lot of time. You have to deal with the lighting issues. Those unexpected shots that you can't sit there and figure out what the camera settings need to be in a split second. Then there are all those people in the audience that think they are the photographer snapping shots at the same time (even though you ask them not to) and then you have the problem of ghosting. You can't exactly stop the bride and say...heh you need a little powder on your forehead because we are getting a reflection while she is walking down the isle. Wedding photography is in my opinion one of the hardest to do, simply because it's a once in a life time moment and there is no going back to re shoot the shot if it doesn't work out right. I've only done three weddings, two were small but the third was fairly large. After the third, I don't want to do it ever again.

As far as #2 is concerned, I doubt you'd get many sales even on your own if you put that kind of restriction of digital only on them. Customers buy these images and illustrations for commercial use rather it be for their web site, their ads in magazines or brochures, if the image was used for their website more than likely they are going to use it for "material" advertising to.

Good luck in finding an agency for this.

112
I have the 85 1.8 and it is a good sharp lens. Many portrait photographers use the 85 as their lens of choice. It's good for close up head and shoulder shots. To get the full body shot you have to step back a bit, but it is a good sharp lens and the one I personally prefer.

This one was taken with the 85 lens: Hope it posts right.

Just my own reaction, but... I lost interest in Zazzle not because of the microscopic number of sales, but because the process of creating new products (and multiple stores) was so tedious and time-consuming.  They'd need to greatly streamline their site and process before I'd spend any more time.

It can be tedious but once you get a lot on there then the income does keep coming. I haven't contributed anything for awhile and my income keeps going up. I usually use the ones I already have on there and just hit customize to create another item similar and it creates a new item, it doesn't edit the other one. It already has the keywords so it doesn't take much.

114
Thanks to all ;)

I've finally decided that I will create different stores for different niches. The first one is gonna be ready next week (apparently during weekend they are not processing products made with "quick create".

Now there are just a handful of test products: http://www.zazzle.com/artisticfractal

Love the ties. Good luck with your new store. I make more off Zazzle than I ever did microstock.

115
I personally have separate stores. For me it's easier to keep track of things and from a customer point of view it's easier for them to find what they want if the stores are specialized. It takes awhile to start making sales because the products start at the bottom and have to work their way up. Once I made it to Pro status the sales picked up. The more you have to offer the more likely you'll have sales.

I always research the subject I am looking for. Wiki is just the starting point. A person would be foolish not to do the research of sources. Not all information is inaccurate on Wiki. Unless you are an expert in the field then how would you know the correct answer, that's why people do the research and how would you really know the correct answer unless you were the expert. So many search results come up with a google search and many sources vary in their information. It's really subject to interpretation on the researcher's part. How would you know what is correct and what is not?

I'm just happy I deleted my port there.... ;D Sounds like the same ol same ol...messing up the books for their benefit so you don't know what's yours or theirs. As long as it's messed up they ain't gotta pay and it's money in their pocket...it's called cash flow....lol

I'd be interested to know how you did that.  I haven't been able to make squat on Zazzle.

Business Cards....I don't sell many prints from my photography even though they are on there, but can incorporate them into themes for the business cards and sell them. That is all I do there any more because that is where the money is. I have about 875 business cards on there. Heh and if you have any of those shots that you think are good but the stock sites say no commercial value or white balance is off ect ect or you know they might be a bit blurry....you can always incorporate them into a design for a business card because the card is so small, the imperfections are not noticed...;)

I had disabled all my files except two of them. I haven't uploaded to them for over a year or a year and a half. I requested my payout and now it won't let me disable the final two files. It keeps saying disable limit reached on the first file. I can't even disable one file. Anyone know if they don't let you disable if you request final payout. I'm tired of stock and am moving on to bigger and better things. I'm slowly getting all my ports deleted...except Shutterstock which I actually make money off of so will keep it. Anyone know what the deal is with just disabling two files?

Sorry to see you go from microstock Donna, but I don't blame you.  A lot of changes these days make it less rewarding than it used to be.  Just wanted to wish you well in those greener pastures you're headed to :)

And I am sure DT admins will disable your images and close your account when you ask them to after your payout.

Thank You Lisa. It's just not worth the frustration any more. I'm keeping my Shutterstock account because it does make money, but I make more off of Zazzle in a month than I did from all the stock sites combined that I was on in a year.

Best movie of all time...in my opinion is "Last of the Mohicans"  If you love photography you'd love the beauty of the scenes. It's filmed in mountain region of North Carolina and after I went to this area I feel in love with it and try to go back camping every year. If you've never seen it I highly recommend it. You can see it on Netflix...;)

interesting!
But Zazzle is about self promotion. How do you do that?

I have a web site but don't get a lot of sales from it, but a lot of people feature my business cards because they are good sellers.
Here's my store on Zazzle

Did you upload the two files more than six months ago? If not, there is only a certain percentage of files that you can disable. If the files are older than six months, you should be able to disable them, but you might want to leave them anyway until you get your payout. Once you get paid, if you don't want the account at all, you could just have customer service close the account. I don't think the disabling of files is related to the payout, but I could be wrong.

I haven't uploaded to them in over a year and it was about three or four months ago that I disabled all the other files but those two. They have both been on there for over two years. I don't know what the deal is, but I got a feeling I'll have to ask them to disable them.

They are a good site to be on. I don't make a ton of money off them, usually between $60.00 to $75.00 a month. You get $5.00 for every sale. Once you get the hang of it they are easy to do and it lets you be creative with different designs for business cards.

You don't have to be exclusive. I have business cards on Zazzle also and believe me make A LOT more off the Zazzle business cards. I make much more off of Zazzle than I do the stock sites....that's why I deleting my ports on all of them but Shutterstock.
